Hollywoodbets Durban July leads the way in KZN tourism surge

KwaZulu-Natal is experiencing a significant tourism surge this winter, with the Hollywoodbets Durban July leading a packed calendar of cultural, sporting, and film-related events. These events are expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors and inject millions into the local economy.
EThekwini mayor Cyril Xaba yesterday announced the City's state of readiness to host Africa's premier horse racing and fashion event, set to take place at Greyville Racecourse on Saturday.
'We anticipate R278 million in direct spend and close to R700 million contribution to the GDP. This will create over 4,000 jobs,' said Xaba of the event's economic impact.

Hotel occupancy is expected to reach 80%, with over 50,000 local and international visitors expected to descend on Durban for the event.
'The Hollywoodbets Durban July is more than a race – it is a catalyst for social cohesion as it unites South Africans through the passion of sport, the expression of cultural pride, and the glamour of fashion,' Xaba said.
To ensure safety, Xaba confirmed that 'our law enforcement agencies have developed an integrated safety plan, supported by the private security industry. Visitors are guaranteed a safe stay in the city with high police visibility, particularly around the Greyville precinct and other strategic sites across the municipality.'
The event's theme, Marvels of Mzansi, celebrates South Africa's cultural heritage and diversity.
The Durban July Fashion Experience, hosted in collaboration with the Hollywood Foundation, will feature 25 designers. The programme is divided into three categories: the Young Designers Awards with 10 student finalists; the Durban Fashion Fair Rising Stars with nine emerging designers who will share R250,000 for business development; and the Invited Designer Showcase with six established designers, four of whom are graduates of the city's Fashion Development Programme.
'Through this event, these designers will get exposure to thousands of attendees and potential buyers,' said Xaba.
The Durban July will also be supported by city-wide activations and spin-off events including music events such as Fact Durban Rocks, Any Given Sunday, Anywhere in the City, and Mojo's July Weekend to spread festivities across the townships and suburbs.
KZN's broader winter tourism season has also gained momentum. According to the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority (KZNTAFA), the province is expecting a 12–15% increase in domestic arrivals this July compared to 2024, translating to around R500 million in tourism-related contributions.
'July will deliver a substantial surge in domestic travel, thanks to the alignment of the school holidays, hallmark events and our temperate winter climate,' said KZNTAFA Interim CEO Sibusiso Gumbi.
Gumbi added that the Hollywoodbets Durban July alone is expected to bring in significant tourism spend.
At KZNTAFA's hospitality marquee at Greyville, guests will enjoy an exclusive fashion installation curated by top KZN designers in collaboration with cultural curators, ahead of the Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards on 19 July.

Sun Goddess' Vanya Mangaliso and musician Feya Faku laid to rest

Sun Goddess founder Mangaliso passed away on the 26th of June, while Faku died during his tour in Switzerland three days before that. Mangaliso was 53 at the time of her death, and Faku was 10 years older. Speaking at the funeral, her son, Kwantu Mangaliso, said his mother was very special to many people. 'One thing I can say is that a role she took most seriously and a role that she excelled at was being a mother. Specifically being a mother to the four of us,' said Kwantu. Since her passing, tributes have poured in from various corners for the designer. Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe, founder and chief executive of Africa Fashion International (AFI), described Mangaliso as a distinguished fashion designer and businesswoman. ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula paid tribute to Mangaliso as a trailblazer in the fashion world. 'She was the first to commercialise African designer wear, taking it from the back room to boutique stores in top malls. 'She cracked the door open for Maxhosa, Bathu and others by mainstreaming African designers and brands,' wrote Mbalula. 'My mother worked tirelessly for the good of her family and she helped build us into the people we are today. My mom was pretty much the hardest working person I knew,' said son, Kwantu. Mangaliso was laid to rest at the Heroes Acre in Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg. This is the same burial site where musicians like Mandoza and AKA, boxer Baby Jake Matlala and actor Joe Mafela were also buried. Mangaliso is survived by her husband, Thando Mangaliso; her children, Limani, Kwantu, Kwindla, and Kumkani Mangaliso; nieces, nephews, cousins; extended family; and her legacy, the Sun Goddess. 'One of the things we have not done as South Africans is to appreciate Feya as a world-renowned trumpeter because most of the time Feya has been traveling across the globe,' said Gift Ngqondi, speaking for the family at the funeral. 'Whether he is attending the North Sea Jazz Festival, whether he was in Switzerland, or Norway and these are the places that Feya has performed than any other place in South Africa ' Fellow musician, saxophonist McCoy Mrubata, said he enjoyed Faku's style of playing the trumpet. 'The trumpet was like his second voice,' Mrubata said speaking to the SABC. 'He was very melodic and he had technique, but he could be very very soulful, you know, I used to enjoy his trumpet playing.' Before his demise, Faku was reportedly exploring the idea of starting a music program in New Brighton schools to help nurture musical talent in the community. The Real Prince narrowly got the better of race favourite Eight On Eighteen to win the Hollywoodbets Durban July Image: Candiese Lenferna | Race Coast The 2025 Hollywoodbets Durban July at Greyville was marked by a breathtaking finish, culminating in a hard-fought victory for The Real Prince. Ridden by Craig Zackey and trained by Dean Kannemeyer, The Real Prince triumphantly crossed the line ahead of strong challenger Eight On Eighteen, who had aimed to etch his name into the history books as the first three-year-old to win both the Gr1 WSB Cape Met and the Durban July in the same season. As the race unfolded, anticipation mixed with tension – especially for fans familiar with The Real Prince's heritage. His full brother, Gimme A Prince, was named Champion Sprinter just two seasons prior. Thus, questions arose regarding whether The Real Prince could sustain the grueling 2200m of the July. Yet, he resolutely answered those doubts during the race, taking on the favourite and prevailing in dramatic style. The early pace was spearheaded by Oriental Charm, with jockey JP van der Merwe judiciously choosing to ease into the race. The tempo was measured as van der Merwe held his position, allowing the field to remain tightly bunched. Meanwhile, Richard Fourie, aboard Eight On Eighteen, found himself shuffling through the pack, unable to achieve the preferred inside rail position. As the runners rounded the final turn, the competition intensified. Fourie made his move around the turn, surging ahead after clearing the subway, seemingly setting himself up for a victory. However, with Zackey maintaining a perfect position close to the rail, The Real Prince suddenly emerged as a formidable threat, gradually advancing on the outside with relentless stride. With the finish line in sight, the race lived up to its reputational grandeur, as both competitors appeared neck-and-neck. In an electrifying culmination, The Real Prince nudged ahead, securing his place as the undisputed champion, marking famed trainer Dean Kannemeyer's fourth win in the Durban July and a second victory for Lady Christine Laidlaw and Khaya Stables.
