Business Wire28-04-2025

NEW ORLEANS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Today, Nacha and the U.S. Faster Payments Council announced that 161 payments professionals successfully passed the inaugural Accredited Faster Payment Professional (AFPP) exam, marking an important milestone in demonstrating expertise and commitment within the faster payments ecosystem.
The AFPP credential demonstrates the growing emphasis on professional education and industry excellence in an era where faster payments are becoming a cornerstone of commerce and economic activity.
The AFPP accreditation, developed as a collaboration between Nacha and the U.S. Faster Payments Council (FPC), with assistance from Payments Associations and other leading payments industry experts and stakeholders, sets a new standard for professionals dedicated to advancing secure, efficient and innovative faster payments solutions. The exam focuses on a variety of payments rails used across the United States, including Same Day ACH, FedNow, RTP and Push-to-Card Debit Card Networks. This credential demonstrates the growing emphasis on professional education and industry excellence in an era where faster payments are becoming a cornerstone of commerce and economic activity.
'The AFPP designation exemplifies the dedication of industry professionals committed to leading the evolution of faster payments. Passing this exam is a significant feat, and these individuals have validated their expertise and proven their passion for shaping the future of payments,' said Jane Larimer, President and CEO of Nacha. 'Their hard work paves the way for stronger collaboration and innovation in our industry.'
The FPC also recognized the significance of this accomplishment. FPC CEO and Executive Director Reed Luhtanen commented, 'We congratulate these pioneering AFPPs for their achievement. Faster payments are vital to improving the lives of consumers and the efficient operation of businesses. The AFPP accreditation reflects a shared commitment to fostering a secure and accessible faster payments ecosystem. This accomplishment is a testament to the expertise of these leaders in the field.'
As the faster payments landscape grows and evolves, this achievement begins a new chapter in industry excellence and innovation. In the first quarter of 2025, Same Day ACH continued its growth trajectory, recording 326 million payments valued at $897 billion. Those represent increases of 19.1% and 24.8% respectively over the same time period in 2024. Likewise, more than 100 million instant payment transactions were conducted in the United States in the first quarter of 2025.

UK scraps border checks on EU fruit and vegetable imports

The UK government is to remove border checks for fruit and vegetable imports from the EU ahead of a new sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) deal between the two markets. Last month, the UK and the EU signalled plans for a new SPS agreement as part of a broader, new trading relationship. While the details of the SPS agreement are still being negotiated, the UK government said post-Brexit border checks on 'medium-risk' fruit and vegetables – including items such as tomatoes, grapes, plums and peppers – imported from the EU will not be enforced as planned from next month. The easing of checks has now been extended from 1 July 2025 to 31 January 2027. UK trade association Fresh Produce Consortium (FPC) welcomed the move and said it spares the industry from '700,000 consignments annually subject to UK SPS border controls and avoids an eye-watering £200m ($270.2m) in added costs'. The UK said under the prospective SPS deal with the EU eliminating routine checks on food imports and exports is expected to lower costs and ease pressure on food prices. The move forms part of London's efforts to 'cut excessive red tape' and reduce fees for traders engaged in exporting to and importing from the bloc, it added. According to the government, the changes are intended to 'strengthen' supply chains and reduce costs for both businesses and consumers. UK Biosecurity Minister Baroness Hayman said: 'This government's EU deal will make food cheaper, slash bureaucracy and remove cumbersome border controls for businesses.' Traders are required to continue following the UK's Border Target Operating Model (BTOM) until the SPS deal comes into force, the government said, adding that "risk-based surveillance" will continue to handle the biosecurity risks. FPC chief executive Nigel Jenney added: 'This is a unique and sector-specific exemption, and one we've fought long and hard to achieve. 'We're proud to have secured a common-sense solution that protects our diverse and critical industry – from supermarket supply chains to the thousands of SMEs in wholesale and foodservice.' Stablecoin Policy's Web Is Full Of Characters

There has been a web of intrigue playing out in the stablecoin policy sphere. The Senate Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for U.S. Stablecoins Act is back on track. Debate will continue when Congress returns from recess next week, and a vote is likely to follow posthaste. Just as the policy process has been dramatic, the stablecoin advocacy ecosystem has been full of theatrics. Agencies, banks, crypto companies, public institutions are among the cast of characters in the stablecoin mesh. A stablecoin, a digital dollar, is an instrument whose time has come. Previous proposals were far less innovative. For decades, plans to leverage the post office to provide access to bank services to the underserved floated across progressive circles in Washington. More recently, the 2023 launch of FedNow, an instant payments system built by the Federal Reserve, did not live up to expectations. The urgency to fill this gap has been mounting for a long time. Perhaps it was the obstacles the federal government faced as they tried to deliver stimulus checks to the most vulnerable during COVID that solidified stablecoins as a viable solution. Stablecoins do not represent a total disruption. The revenue model is essentially the same as traditional financial institutions. Companies invest their reserves and subsequently profit from the gains. Is that synergy a good thing? It depends on who you ask. The legacy banking system is entrenched and tensions are high in some corners. Independent Community Bankers of America President and CEO Rebeca Romero Rainey said this in a statement before the latest GENIUS Act vote. "ICBA urges the Senate to ensure the GENIUS Act provides regulatory clarity while including necessary guardrails to protect against the negative economic consequences that would result from community bank disintermediation. ICBA reiterates our concerns outlined for the Congress since the beginning of this debate. With community banks using deposits to make 60% of the nation's small-business loans and 80% of banking industry agricultural lending, mitigating the risk of retail deposits migrating out of community banks — which have proven commitments to their communities and local credit creation — is critical.' Big banks, however, want a piece of the pie. JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citi, Wells Fargo, and others are exploring the possibility of creating a unified stablecoin according to news reports. There's also web spinning in the crypto native industry. After rumors spread recently that Coinbase and Ripple were vying to acquire Circle, the largest stablecoin company in the United States just squashed speculation by announcing their IPO will go live next week on June 4. Oversight of this messy web will rest in the purview of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. 'I'm also focused on expanding responsible bank activities involving digital assets to support the 50 million Americans who now hold some form of cryptocurrency. Regulated banks must keep up with this transformation,' Acting Comptroller Rodney E. Hood recently said in a speech this month. New OCC guidance states that 'crypto-asset custody, certain stablecoin activities, and participation in independent node verification networks such as distributed ledger are permissible for national banks and federal savings associations.' The stage is set for centralized and decentralized finance to fuel the sector. But will frictions fester? The stablecoin policy web is just commencing and will likely get more complex after legislation is signed into law.
