Katie Ledecky Ousted! Canadian Prodigy Summer McIntosh Wins Gold In 400m Freestyle At World Championships

News18a day ago
Summer McIntosh won gold in the women's 400m freestyle at the World Championships in Singapore, ahead of Li Bingjie and Katie Ledecky, marking her first world title in this event.
Canadian swimming prodigy Summer McIntosh delivered a commanding performance to win gold in the women's 400m freestyle at the World Championships in Singapore on Sunday, leaving her competitors far behind—including American legend Katie Ledecky, who finished third.
The 18-year-old touched the wall in 3 minutes 56.26 seconds—nearly two seconds ahead of silver medalist Li Bingjie of China. Ledecky, 28, settled for bronze in a race that highlighted the growing dominance of McIntosh in middle-distance freestyle.
This victory marks McIntosh's first world title in the 400m freestyle—an event in which she currently holds the world record—and it's the opening step in her ambitious pursuit of five individual gold medals at this meet.
The opening night of competition saw McIntosh and Ledecky reignite their high-profile rivalry from the Paris Olympics, where McIntosh took silver in this event and Ledecky finished outside the medals. Their next anticipated showdown is in the 800m freestyle, widely considered the marquee race of the championships.
But in the 400m, McIntosh wasted no time asserting control. She surged ahead early and steadily widened the gap, turning the race into a one-woman show. By the final 100 meters, it was clear the gold was hers.
Record-Breaking Form Continues
McIntosh arrived in Singapore in sensational form. At the Canadian Olympic Trials in June, she shattered the world record in the 400m freestyle with a time of 3:54.18—more than a second faster than the previous mark of 3:55.38 set by Australia's Ariarne Titmus at the 2023 World Championships.
Titmus, the reigning Olympic champion in the event, is absent from this year's meet, having opted to take the season off to focus on preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The McIntosh family's legacy in elite sports runs deep. Summer's mother, Jill McIntosh, competed in swimming for Canada at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, while her older sister, Brooke McIntosh, is a nationally ranked pairs figure skater.
In addition to her 400m freestyle triumph, Summer McIntosh captured Olympic gold in the 200m butterfly, 200m medley, and 400m medley in Paris.

Ben Stokes 'loses respect' after farcical Manchester moment: ‘Why would we want handshake? You had 2 days...'

Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif didn't hold back and said Ben Stokes lost respect during the Manchester Test because of his actions during an altercation with Ravindra Jadeja over the draw declaration. Jadeja and Washington Sundar, who showed grit and determination to take the game away from England, were close to centuries when Stokes asked Jadeja to shake hands and settle for a draw, but the latter refused as they continued to bat. Skipper Stokes and other English players got rattled, resorting to constant chatter aimed at unsettling India's resilient all-round duo. Meanwhile, their bowling effort lacked intensity, with several frontline players seemingly conserving energy rather than pushing for a breakthrough during a draining passage of play. Ben Stokes faced criticism for an altercation with Ravindra Jadeja for denying early draw.(AFP) India was 425-4 in its second innings -- including centuries to Ravindra Jadeja (107 not out), Washington Sundar (101 not out) and skipper Shubman Gill (103) — and 114 runs ahead when an early stumps was called. The all-rounder duo added 203 runs for the fifth wicket. Stokes also looked miffed when the Indian batters finally decided to shake hands for a draw. Kaif expressed disappointment over Ben Stokes' behaviour, criticising the England skipper for appealing to halt the game after failing to dismiss India. He said such actions undermined the respect Stokes had earned over the years, 'Ben Stokes has lost respect because of one moment when he wanted to stop the game," Kaif said in a clip on Instagram. 'Why would we want to do that? You weren't able to bowl out India, had nearly two days to do that. You weren't able to win. I don't understand what he was trying to do by getting the game to stop," Kaif said in a video he posted on Instagram. 'It takes years to earn respect and one moment to lose it' The former Indian cricketer said that the English skipper had a great game with bat and ball but just one bad moment and he lost the respect. 'Ben Stokes bowled so well, scored a century and everybody was lauding him. It takes years to earn respect and one moment to lose it. Today was that moment for Ben Stokes when he lost respect," he added.

'What Do You Expect From...': India Legend Backs Under Fire Anshul Kamboj

Anshul Kamboj struggled with a lack of speed and control in the Manchester Test against England, conceding 89 runs for 1 wicket in his 18 overs. The legendary Kapil Dev has backed young Anshul Kamboj after his much-criticised debut at Old Trafford in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England. As the Haryana and Chennai Super Kings seamer was taken for plenty in a series of uninspired bursts with questions being raised over his fitness amidst dip in pace. However, former India captain Kapil believes it is too soon to judge his capabilities and critics shouldn't jump the gun on the 24-year-old. 'What do you expect from a debutant, that he should take 10 wickets? You have to assess his potential. If he's good enough, he will bounce back. Everyone is nervous when playing their first game. The result may not be ideal, but I believe the ability is there, and that's more important," Kapil told reporters. Despite only 25 first-class matches behind him, Kamboj was fast-tracked into the senior Indian Test squad as a backup seamer for the English tour following impressive performances for Haryana and India A. Not initially part of the main squad, the right-arm pacer came in as cover for the injured Akash Deep and was handed his debut cap in Manchester. However, the young talent's lack of readiness for top-level challenge was exposed by the Bazball brigade, as openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley hammered his first spell. Kamboj did come back with the wicket of Duckett on 94 but finished the innings with disappointing figures of 1 for 89 off his 18 overs, going at an expensive economy rate of 4.90. Even as India searched for inspiration in a collectively poor bowling effort and conceded a mammoth 669 all out, Kamboj was barely called upon by skipper Shubman Gill, who instead banked on his spinners – Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar – to provide him some control. It remains to be seen whether the young seamer would be retained for the fifth and final Test of the series, starting July 31. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Anshul Kamboj To Be Dropped, Kuldeep Yadav Can Come In India's 11 For 5th Test: Report

Last Updated: Anshul Kamboj will be replaced by Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh could debut, and Kuldeep Yadav might replace Shardul Thakur in India's 11 for the final Test against England. The Indian men's team has reportedly lined up several changes for the final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. According to a report in PTI, pacer Anshul Kamboj, who made an underwhelming and visibly nervous debut in the fourth game at Old Trafford, is set to make way for fit-again Akash Deep. The report said left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh has also recovered from his hand injury and could be ready for a chance. Although head coach Gautam Gambhir declared all pacers fit after the draw in Manchester, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj have bowled excessively throughout the series and might be rested. Bumrah has already played the three Tests he said he'd be available for, but with the series on the line, it could change. If it doesn't, Arshdeep could have a good chance to come back. Meanwhile, the report added that the case for Kuldeep Yadav coming in is 'stronger than ever' and he could come in for all-rounder Shardul Thakur. Thakur scored a decent 41 with the bat in the first innings but bowled a measly 11 overs across the Test for no wickets. 'So Kuldeep, we are trying to find a way for him, but it is just (that we need) more consistent runs from our top six, so that we can bring a guy like Kuldeep in," India bowling coach Morne Morkel said earlier in the series. 'It's finding when he comes in, how we can find balance and how we can get that batting line-up to be a little bit longer and stronger. We've seen in the past that we've lost wickets in clumps. Kuldeep is world-class and he's bowling really well at the moment, so we're trying our best to find ways for him to get in," he had added. While these changes would be confirmed later, one substitute is certain: Dhruv Jurel is coming in for Rishabh Pant. Pant is injured and ruled out of the series and Jurel, who was already keeping wickets in the previous game, would come in full time. It would be interesting to see where he bats, though, considering, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar did exceedingly well at number five and six in Manchester. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
