He had a brain which was way ahead of his time," he said.
Smith also spoke of Eastham's involvement in a landmark 1963 court case that improved players' freedom to move between clubs and reformed the transfer market."When you look at his history and what he did for professional footballers, every footballer now should be bowing down to George Eastham," he said."Absolutely incredible the man was, from the beginning to the end."
Ex-Stoke player Mark Stein said Eastham was "part of the Stoke folklore", adding that he "set the standard" for the game's future."That [1972] team was one of the legendary teams of the Stoke generation," he added.Under Alf Ramsey, Eastham made 19 appearances for England between 1963 and 1966, scoring twice. He was eventually awarded a World Cup winners medal in 2009 following a campaign to reward all members of the squad.Eastham was awarded an OBE for services to football in 1973, a year before he retired, and was Stoke's manager from March 1977 to January 1978.

Liverpool target £45m Newcastle United star after agreeing Florian Wirtz deal
Liverpool are considering a move for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, according to reports. The Premier League champions are finally set to complete their deal to sign Florian Wirtz after agreeing a £116 million deal with Bayer Leverkusen this week. However, The Sun reports that Liverpool are planning for further signings and are weighing up whether to revive a move for Gordon. Arne Slot's side attempted to sign the England international from Newcastle last summer but were unable to reach an agreement. Gordon, who joined Newcastle in a £45m deal from Everton in January 2023, scored six goals and registered five assists in the Premier League this season. The 24-year-old could be viewed as a possible replacement for Luis Diaz, who is Barcelona's top target to strengthen their attack. When asked about his links with a move to Liverpool last summer, Gordon made it clear that he was happy at Newcastle. More Trending 'There's been a lot of talk this year about my future, where I'm going, where I want to go, without anyone actually asking me,' Gordon said in December. 'Just leave me to play football. I just want to be happy, play football and I love it here. I've said it plenty of times. 'I think with the speculation, people assume that it's correct, but you've never heard from me once that I'm unhappy at his place. I love everyone here, I love playing football here, and that was all that was. 'It took me away from enjoying my football this year and I think that is where the inconsistency has come from because I've got caught in that a little bit. But I just want to play football, especially for Newcastle.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Celebrities embark on 555-mile cycle for MND research and deliver Lions match ball
Scottish rugby legend Kenny Logan and his television presenter wife Gabby are among those preparing to take part in Doddie'5 Lions Challenge, cycling around 100 miles a day for six days, departing from Belfast on Sunday. The team will cycle through counties including Galway, Limerick and Cork, to arrive in Dublin on June 20 and deliver the match ball to the Aviva Stadium for the British and Irish Lions' 1888 Cup clash with Argentina. Doddie Weir, pictured in 2018, died of MND aged 52 in late 2022 (Jane Barlow/PA) Some participants have had to pull out due to injury, including Weir's son Hamish, who will instead drive a support vehicle, while Scotland rugby stars Bryan Redpath and Hugo Southwell, and ex-Lions and Ireland international Rob Henderson, will also no longer be able to take part. Football legend Ally McCoist, actor Jamie Bamber, former Harlequins player Mel Deane, and cancer campaigner Iain Ward will all take part alongside the Logans. The challenge has raised more than £300,000 for My Name'5 Doddie Foundation and the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association so far, with hopes of reaching £500,000 before Sunday. Kenny Logan will lead the team, and he has been doing intensive hill sessions on an exercise bike twice a week ahead of his second endurance fundraiser for MND research. He joined the Edinburgh to Paris cycle in 2023 which raised almost £1 million. He said: 'We've lost a few to injury, and it just shows how demanding this is going to be. I've had my own aches and pains. No major injuries thankfully but I've definitely been reminded why I probably shouldn't be moving this much at my age. 'I'm most nervous about the hills. I convinced myself Ireland was flat – it's definitely not. But nerves are good. I've always had them before a big challenge. 'The support's been incredible. We've still got time to push, and every penny counts. 'Since Doddie died, awareness has grown massively – but we still need to fund research. The foundation has committed nearly £20 million already, which is phenomenal, but it's only the beginning. 'Doddie would be proud – but he'd be telling us to go further and faster. That's why we're doing this.' He joked that McCoist needed some help with bike maintenance. Logan said: 'Ally's been out and about, but his bike broke down the other day. I told him not to trust himself to check the batteries on his fancy gears – someone else needs to do that for him.' Weir set up the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation in 2017, the year after he was diagnosed with MND. All funds raised form the cycle will support the foundation to find effective treatments and ultimately a cure for MND. To donate or learn more, visit

Arsenal urged to sign Man City star after £36m Rayan Cherki transfer
Arsenal have been urged to make a move for Phil Foden following Rayan Cherki's move to Manchester City. City have significantly strengthened ahead of the Club World Cup with the signings of Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Ait-Nouri. Cherki arrives at City in a €42.5 million (£36.1m) deal from Lyon following an impressive season in Ligue 1. The 21-year-old also caught the eye with his first two senior appearances for France's national side last week. Cherki primarily played on the right side of Lyon's attack which raises questions over Foden's place in the City team under Pep Guardiola. City are already looking to sell Jack Grealish this summer but former Chelsea, Marseille and Republic of Ireland striker Tony Cascarino believes Foden may also be on the move. When asked if he believes Arsenal would make a move for Grealish, Cascarino told talkSPORT: 'No, I think Foden's way more likely. 'Obviously Arteta worked at Man City with Phil Foden and for whatever reason, I'm sure we'll find out down the line, Phil Foden just hasn't been the player we know him to be this season. More Trending 'From where he was the Football Writers' Player of the Year the season before, his performances this year have just not justified that. 'But all what's happening at City and all the spending that's gone on, I wouldn't be surprised if Foden is allowed to go somewhere. 'Whether City let him go Arsenal, I don't know, but they let Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko go there. 'If Arsenal could get him, I think Arteta would really consider that, yeah.'
