Malaysia committed to developing alternative timber sources to meet global needs
The Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) said the initiative is crucial not only for the long-term viability of the country's timber industry but also to maintain Malaysia's position as one of the world's leading exporters of wood products.
'With the growing global demand for locally produced wood products, there is now greater focus on ensuring a sustainable and consistent supply of raw materials,' FRIM said in a statement.
Malaysia's timber industry continues to demonstrate robust growth, with total exports reaching RM22.9 billion last year.
According to FRIM, timber remains vital across multiple sectors, including furniture manufacturing, biofuel production, and biocomposites. However, the ecological functions of native forests, such as regulating climate and supporting biodiversity, extend far beyond timber production. This underscores the urgent need to explore sustainable alternatives, to reduce reliance on natural forests.
In response, FRIM said the government, through the Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB), has introduced the the Forest Plantation Development Programme (PPLH), to reduce reliance on natural forests.
'The programme involves the cultivation of eight high-value tree species, including akasia, khaya, jati, and kelempayan, along with fast-growing species such as eucalyptus and bamboo. These have been proven capable of meeting the demands of the timber industry, without compromising natural forest ecosystems,' it said.
FRIM said that it plays a key role in the initiative, through research and development efforts focused on forest plantations, high-quality tree propagation, wood processing technologies, and timber quality evaluation.
'FRIM's studies have demonstrated the strong potential of several selected plantation tree species to meet market demands while supporting environmental sustainability,' it added.

"Based on the disposal consideration and the audited net book value of the property as at Dec 31, 2024 of approximately RM22.9 million, the group is expected to record an estimated one-off pro forma gross gain on disposal of approximately RM29.0 million before deducting estimated taxes and expenses of RM4.3 million,' it said. Miti: Semiconductor workers see 20pct pay jump after upskilling programmes
KUALA LUMPUR: Workers who took part in upskilling programmes for the semiconductor industry have enjoyed pay rises of up to 20 per cent, with more than half now earning over RM3,000 a month, the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) said. These initiatives, led by bodies like Collaborative Research in Engineering, Science and Technology (CREST) and TalentCorp, are part of the ministry's efforts to equip local talent for high-value sectors and have trained over 13,000 skilled workers so far. "This collaboration not only meets industry needs but also benefits participants. It shows that strategic talent development yields tangible results in income improvement and workforce competitiveness," Miti said in a statement issued in conjunction with the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). It said the training efforts are tied to Malaysia's broader ambition to become a regional semiconductor hub. Among the initiatives in place are IC MyChipStart, the Selangor IC Design Park, Silicon Island in Penang and the Sama Jaya High-Tech Park in Sarawak. Beyond talent development, Miti also revealed that RM22.9 billion worth of Green Investments had been approved as of March 2025 under the Green Investment Strategy (GIS), covering 1,492 projects nationwide. These projects are expected to create 9,199 jobs, contributing to Malaysia's long-term sustainable development goals under the 13MP. The GIS focuses on seven key areas, including renewable energy and the circular economy, aimed at boosting green competitiveness and achieving national carbon reduction targets. Of the RM611 billion allocated under 13MP, RM227 billion has been set aside for the economic sector. Miti is tasked with implementing several key policies, including the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030, the National Semiconductor Strategy, the National Investment Aspirations and the national i-ESG framework. To ensure accountability and timely implementation, Miti said it will enhance monitoring through the Policy Implementation Plan Monitoring System, supported by mechanisms such as the Miti Report Card and the Delivery Management Unit under NIMP 2030. "Miti is fully committed to driving the strategic policies of 13MP to position Malaysia as a global potential driver," said minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.

FRIM, Perlis Forestry Partner To Boost Economic Value Of Teak
PADANG BESAR, July 27 (Bernama) -- The Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) and the Perlis State Forestry Department (JPNPs) have strengthened their collaboration to boost the value of Perlis teak, aiming to support community economic development through downstream product creation. FRIM director-general Datuk Dr Ismail Parlan said these downstream products, derived from teak plantations, contribute directly to environmental sustainability efforts, in line with the designation of FRIM's Mata Ayer Research Station (SPF) as a biological site within the Perlis Geopark. 'FRIM remains committed to promoting Perlis teak locally and internationally. Under this partnership, we have organised various programmes involving state agencies, associations, and local entrepreneurs to unlock the economic value of teak plantations,' he said. He was speaking at the launch of the 'Pasar Geowarisan Se-Jati 2025' at Teak Eco Park, SPF Mata Ayer, officiated by the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail here today. Ismail said since the station's establishment in 1974, it has focused on research and development (R&D) of forest plantations, especially teak. 'In support of state efforts to promote ecotourism, FRIM and JPNPs rebranded the station as Teak Eco Park, now serving as a teak reference centre and eco-attraction in Perlis,' he said. He said FRIM continues to enhance the branding of teak-based products by building a strong market reputation. Initiatives like the 'Royal Perlis Jati Craft' and the push for Geographical Indication (GI) status are expected to increase the value and marketability of Perlis teak products, he added. 'The Pasar Geowarisan Se-Jati 2025 is part of this ongoing effort and has been included in the 2025 State Tourism Calendar.
