Easthampton recognized as 'climate leader community'
EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – The city of Easthampton has been officially recognized as a 'Climate Leader Community' by the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER).
The city joins an inaugural group of just 19 municipalities across the Commonwealth to receive the designation.

The recognition was announced at a ceremony in Watertown on May 2, where Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll presented awards to representatives from the selected communities. The honor acknowledges Easthampton's commitment to sustainability and long-term climate resilience, building on its previous designation as a Green Community, which it has held since 2010.
To qualify for Climate Leader status, Easthampton submitted a municipal decarbonization roadmap—a strategic plan to guide the city toward achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Key strategies outlined in Easthampton's roadmap include:
Transitioning the city's vehicle fleet to electric models,
Electrifying municipal buildings and improving energy efficiency,
Engaging residents, businesses, and institutions to support sustainability efforts,
Integrating climate resilience into municipal operations with a focus on equity and environmental justice.
With this certification, Easthampton becomes eligible for up to $1.15 million in state funding to support local climate and energy initiatives. The grants may be used for projects such as solar energy installations, clean heating technologies, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and other green infrastructure upgrades.
The Climate Leader Community program aims to accelerate climate action across Massachusetts by supporting municipalities that are leading the way in reducing emissions and building sustainable systems.

Moriarty Citizen of the Year at the Springfield Regional Chamber's Spotlight and annual meeting, both his family and 22News family proudly watching on. 'So many people have said how much they've respected me and liked watching me, it's unbelievable,' Tettemer said. 'I appreciate it so much.' The event served as a celebration of growth, connection, and the people behind the region's progress, from local leaders within journalism, to law, education, and business. For Rich, it was always about delivering the news to viewers with great integrity and lending out a helping hand outside of the station. 'Because it's about commitment to the community,' Tettemer said. 'The Children's Miracle Work Telethon, the NAMI Walkathon, the Super 60 Luncheon that I host with the Rotary Club. There's a lot of things I've had the chance to be a part of, and it's so cool to be recognized for that.' And after years of shining a light on others and the stories that shaped us, that light now shone on Rich, who is always 'working for you.' Senator Markey announces plans to file amendment on AI regulation
BOSTON (WWLP) – State Senator Ed Markey (D-Mass.) has announced that he intends to file an amendment on AI regulation. Senator Markey said he plans to file an amendment to the Senate reconciliation bill to block Republicans' attempt to prevent states from regulating AI in the next ten years. Senators in both parties have expressed an interest in regulating artificial intelligence. Chicopee Fire Department promotes two officers to new ranks
CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – It was an exciting day in Chicopee on Wednesday for two members of the Chicopee Fire Department, as a new captain and lieutenant were sworn in and pinned. Nicholas Brown was promoted to the rank of captain, and Gregory Pray to the rank of lieutenant. Both of their families, as well as members from the fire department, were there to watch and celebrate their achievements. Chicopee celebrates Portuguese heritage with flag-raising ceremony 'We're going to have two more excellent officers who have done a great job through this process, and they are going to represent us really well,' said Chicopee Fire Captain Katie Collins-Kalbaugh. 'I'm so proud of my dad for becoming captain, because he has been practicing for this the whole time, and he's been really working for this, and we finally got him to be captain,' Captain Brown's daughter Mia said. 'Just to say, I am very proud of him.' 'I am very happy, because it makes us have happy tears,' said Captain Brown's daughter Olivia. Both the new captain and lieutenant completed the rigorous process, including studying for months, taking the assessment test, and completing an interview.
