Arrest made in shooting that left 1 dead and 11 hurt around North Carolina house party
Garon Nathaniel Killian, of Lenoir, was being held in jail without bond, the Catawba County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. Online records did not show booking or lawyer information for Killian and the county court clerk's office's phone did not accept voicemails Tuesday evening.
Authorities executed search warrants on Tuesday as part of the investigation into the shooting, which left some people with gunshot wounds and others with injuries from fleeing the gunfire. Additional people could be arrested, the sheriff's office said.
The shooting took place early Sunday in a usually quiet residential neighborhood in southwest Catawba County, about 7 miles (11 kilometers) south of the city of Hickory. Authorities said at least 80 shots were fired beginning at about 12:45 a.m. People reported running, ducking for cover and scrambling to their cars for safety.
The crime scene spanned several properties along a neighborhood road, covering about 2 acres (0.8 hectares), and included outdoor and indoor areas, Sheriff's office Maj. Aaron Turk said Sunday.
A 58-year-old man, Shawn Patrick Hood, of Lenoir, was killed. He was the oldest of the victims, who ranged in age from as young as 16, the sheriff's office said. The agency said it was asking for people who attended the party to contact the office.

Parents of Camp Mystic flood victims testify on camp safety reform in the Texas Senate
Parents of young girls who died in last month's flooding in the Texas Hill Country are in Austin this Wednesday to testify about proposed flood safety legislation for camps and campgrounds. Wednesday's hearing is the first time parents of the victims are speaking to the Legislature publically. Last week they met in private with Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and House Speaker Dustin Burrows at the Texas Capitol and the Governor's Mansion. 27 girls died early on the morning of July 4, when their cabins were inundated with floodwaters. After an introduction from the committee chairman and a review of some aspects of the legislation, the first parents sat at the witness table to testify. Michael McCown, the father of 8-year-old Linnie McCown said his family trusted Camp Mystic with Linnie' life, but the trust was broken "in the most devastating way." "I still remember standing near Bubble Inn the morning of July 5 amidst the wreckage of camp, looking at the cabins, and asking myself, 'How? Why? How could these girls vanish into the night without anyone having eyes on them, while cabins literally just 20 yards away had no casualties. What went wrong?'" McCown said. CiCi Williams Steward, mother of Cile Steward testified next. Cile is one of two flood victims whose body has not been found. CiCi Williams Steward said her daughter marked the third generation of her family to attend Camp Mystic. "Cile's life ended, not because of an unavoidable act of nature, but because of preventable failures. On her fifth day of camp, the beginning of what should have been a magical first summer, our Cile was swept away, along with other bright, beautiful girls. She was stolen from her family, from her future, from the world she lit up with her independence and spunk." Steward said. "This legislation cannot bring back our daughters, but it is the beginning of change that must occur so this tragedy never happens again. It is the start of a promise that their lives, and their deaths, will mean change. It is an effort to ensure that no other family suffers as we all have," she said. The parents are members of a group called the Campaign for Camp Safety, which was formed after the devastating flooding to advocate for an investigation into what happened, as well as policy reforms. Their initial recommendations include: Wednesday's meeting of the Select Committee on Disaster Preparedness and Flooding is the public hearing for Senate Bill 1, which covers safety for both youth camps and campgrounds. According to the bill's author, it incorporates significant feedback from the families of children lost at Camp Mystic. The legislation includes stricter permitting requirements for summer camps; they would no longer be able to operate with cabins located in a 100-year floodplain. Camp Mystic not only had cabins in the 100-year floodplain, but a handful of others were in a regulatory floodway, even closer to the river. Camps will also need to have safety plans approved by the state, hold trainings for staff and volunteers and procedures to communicate with emergency responders, local authorities and parents.

Maryland man shot and killed in Columbia
A Maryland man was shot and killed in Columbia on Tuesday, according to Howard County police. The shooting happened around 10:35 p.m. in a parking lot off Dove Sail Lane and Merriweather Drive. Officers arrived to find a man in a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers identified the man as a 39-year-old from Salisbury who was staying in Columbia. Police believe the shooting was targeted. Howard County Police data shows there were five homicides reported in the county in 2023, compared to 10 in 2024. Earlier in the year, in February, the county experienced a string of violent crimes, including a shooting near the Mall in Columbia that left a 16-year-old and a 15-year-old dead. The shooting raised concerns about repeat offenders, as the 18-year-old suspect, identified as Emmetson Zeah, had prior offenses, including attempted murder and assault. The February shooting outside the mall was the second fatal shooting in that area within six months, after a July shooting left a 17-year-old dead. The violent crimes prompted county police to initiate new crime prevention measures at the mall, like a new detail of uniformed and undercover officers. "Howard County sees small fluctuations up and down in crime categories from year to year," Howard County Police Chief Gregory Der said at the time. "When we see an ongoing problem, we will take all necessary measures and strategies to address it," he added.

UPS employee dies after shooting at distribution facility, IMPD investigating
(This article will update.) A UPS employee died in a shooting at an Indianapolis distribution facility. Just before 10 p.m. Aug. 19, 2025, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a shooting at the shipping company's facility at 5421 W. 81st St. on the city's northwest side. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found a man inside a vehicle in critical condition. He was taken to an area hospital, but died soon after arrival. "We are deeply saddened by the loss of our employee. We defer to authorities for any additional information as there is an ongoing investigation," a UPS spokesperson wrote. His identity was not immediately released by the Marion County Coroner's Office. No arrests or suspect details were released by police early Aug. 20. Mail and package distribution facilities in central Indiana have been the site of multiple shootings in recent years. In April 2021, a mass shooting at the FedEx ground facility in Plainfield left eight dead. In December 2024, 39-year-old Isaac Riley was shot and killed at an Amazon warehouse in Greenfield.
