Top pass rusher falls to Jaguars in CBS Sports 2025 NFL mock draft
Recently, on the 'With the First Pick' podcast, a year-round draft podcast over at CBS Sports, draft analysts Ryan Wilson and Mike Renner alternated picks and put together a first-round mock draft.
And somehow, Penn State's Abdul Carter fell to the Jaguars at pick No. 5. Below is how the first four picks ahead of Jacksonville played out, pushing Carter down several spots:
Jets (trade with Titans): QB Cam Ward
Cleveland: IDL Mason Graham
Giants: CB/WR Travis Hunter
Patriots: OT Will Campbell
The Jaguars already have Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker on the edge, but this would be an easy pick to make for Jacksonville, and you figure out playing time and the rotations afterward.
Listed at 6-3 – 252 pounds, Carter had a huge 2024 season, totaling 66 pressures and 13 sacks. He also graded out well against the run by PFF's metrics.
Compared to the rest of his position group, Carter was second in pressures, fifth in sacks, and fourth in pass rush win rate. He also had the ninth-mos run stops as well.
'I'm taking the best player here,' said Renner. 'I'm shooing positional need because if you're the Jaguars you'll find that elsewhere. Just get talent on this roster.'
On both sides of the football, a priority for new head coach Liam Coen this offseason will be improving the Jaguars play at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.
Defensively speaking, the Jaguars ranked 32 in ESPN's pass-rush win rate metric and 27th in run-stop rate.

It's gonna be one of those things that, like, you talk yourself into in March and April, you know, when there are no actual games on, be like, you know, this team could be respectable. Like this, this team could be respectable with Justin Fields at quarterback, and Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall on this offensive line, and then we're in December and like Tyrod Taylor starting games. I don't know. I, I just, like to me, I think Fields is what he is. We talked about this yesterday. I don't necessarily totally know how he fits in what I imagine this offense wants to be, from a pass game standpoint. I don't love Fields, who's a little bit too robotic as a passer anyways and as a processor. I hate just giving him one option, and which is all you've got in this passing game. Like, we're looking at Tyler Johnson on the depth chart. Tyler Johnson has played for like 11 freaking teams. Josh Reynolds, Josh Reynolds got cut by the Jaguars this offseason, so I didn't even know he was on the Jaguars. Like Mason Tolliver is a 2nd round rookie tight end that. Yeah, like what are we, what are we talking about? So it's just, it's, it's so much. Justin Fields is so much like a touchdown to checkdown passer. He's, that is who he has become. And Garrett Wilson's a guy you want to feed a lot of targets in the intermediate area. I just, I just, I'm. Again, I, I, I've gone from being like, oh, that was a pretty nice little signing by the Jets to just be respectable to now I just, I, I just feel like this is gonna end up being one of the worst passing games in the league, so really depressing to start this off. Fields. The archetype of this player is Hertz, is one guy, Russell Wilson is the other guy, Daniel Jones is another guy. They are, those guys, they play almost exactly the same. They don't throw over the middle. They throw beautiful goal balls, but Daniel Jones doesn't throw them, so he's a little bit different. They scramble a ton. They're very good scramblers. They take a lot of sacks, and they're just, and they're bad in the quick game. So it's a unique style. You can make it work. The freaking Eagles just won the Super Bowl, making this work, but you need a great run game, okay? Jets can get there, but you also need dudes on the outside. If you're only going to throw to the outside, I need not one, but two real players on the outside, not saying both have to be All-Pro receivers, but guys that can tangibly win on the outside. That's the only way this offense can work. It's not adding up to me, and I think it's gonna be very boom or bust, the most extreme boom or bust kind of passing game you can picture, um, but positive sides, you know, the run game could be cool. The College Football Playoff announces new selection process that impacts Notre Dame
The College Football Playoff continues to tweak its formula, and on Wednesday it was announced that they will be changing how they 'assess schedule strength, and how teams perform against their schedule,' as reported by CBS Sports Brandon Marcello. The release goes on to say that more weight will be given to wins against 'strong opponents' which gives teams who have difficult schedules an advantage. The committee will add record strength as well, and they'll judge that by going 'beyond a team's schedule strength to assess how a team performed against that schedule.' That will be difficult in my eyes, as often times preseason polls are incorrect. It is great to see that they have come forward and let teams know that they'll give more credit to wins over good teams, and on the flip side, a bigger penalty for losses to bad teams. They also announced a factor that impacts Notre Dame greatly, as they addresses idle teams in the final week of the season. The committee stated 'that movement in the final weeks should evidence-based and did not recommend creating a formal policy prohibiting such movement.' Since the Irish aren't in a conference, they'll always be one of these teams that could move down without playing. While it doesn't force Notre Dame's hand, it's not the most encouraging part of these changes. The Florida Gators would love nothing more than to keep one of their commits away from one of their rivals in college football. Florida's primary rivals consist of the Florida State Seminoles, Miami Hurricanes and the Georgia Bulldogs. The Florida State game has been dubbed the "Sunshine Showdown," while an even longer name is for the Georgia game each year. The Florida-Georgia rivalry is called "The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party," and was first played in 1915 in Jacksonville, Florida. It is a game that the Gators have not won since 2020, but there is still plenty of hate for Georgia. On Thursday, Florida commit Tyler Chukuyem revealed he is visiting Georgia in the fall. 'The only school trying to get me to flip is Georgia, and I plan on going for a game — that will be my official visit,' he said via Rivals' Chad Simmons. 'It is an in-state school, and I know a lot of people who like Georgia, so it is a school I will take a look at.' Chukuyem is a four-star prospect and the No. 24 offensive tackle in the Rivals Industry Rankings for the 2026 class. He has been committed to the Gators since June 16 and is one of four offensive tackle commits for the program. Florida's other offensive tackle commits include four-star recruit Heze Kent and three-star prospects Chancellor Campbell and Javarii Luckas. While head coach Billy Napier will hope to keep a player like Chukuyem committed, his job is being questioned again. On3's Andy Staples predicted Napier would be fired if DJ Lagway's injury issues continue. Lagway has dealt with injuries this offseason, including a minor calf injury that forced him to wear a boot at the beginning of fall camp. Recruits even used to escape from Urban Meyer's clutches during his dominant run at Florida from 2005-2010. Despite never missing a bowl game, he could not get cornerback Patrick Peterson or running back CJ Spiller. Peterson played for the LSU Tigers, while Spiller opted for the Clemson Tigers. No date has been given for Chukuyem's official visit with the Bulldogs, but it sounds like Florida will have to story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 15, 2025, where it first appeared.
