Top pass rusher falls to Jaguars in CBS Sports 2025 NFL mock draft
A potential No. 1 pick and the top pass rusher in the 2025 NFL draft class fell to the Jacksonville Jaguars in a recent mock draft from CBS Sports.
Recently, on the 'With the First Pick' podcast, a year-round draft podcast over at CBS Sports, draft analysts Ryan Wilson and Mike Renner alternated picks and put together a first-round mock draft.
And somehow, Penn State's Abdul Carter fell to the Jaguars at pick No. 5. Below is how the first four picks ahead of Jacksonville played out, pushing Carter down several spots:
Jets (trade with Titans): QB Cam Ward
Cleveland: IDL Mason Graham
Giants: CB/WR Travis Hunter
Patriots: OT Will Campbell
The Jaguars already have Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker on the edge, but this would be an easy pick to make for Jacksonville, and you figure out playing time and the rotations afterward.
Listed at 6-3 – 252 pounds, Carter had a huge 2024 season, totaling 66 pressures and 13 sacks. He also graded out well against the run by PFF's metrics.
Compared to the rest of his position group, Carter was second in pressures, fifth in sacks, and fourth in pass rush win rate. He also had the ninth-mos run stops as well.
'I'm taking the best player here,' said Renner. 'I'm shooing positional need because if you're the Jaguars you'll find that elsewhere. Just get talent on this roster.'
On both sides of the football, a priority for new head coach Liam Coen this offseason will be improving the Jaguars play at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.
Defensively speaking, the Jaguars ranked 32 in ESPN's pass-rush win rate metric and 27th in run-stop rate.

But there's still work to do to maximize their chances this season, and as free agency slows to a crawl, a handful of veterans remain available. Pittsburgh could use further insulation at receiver, particularly opposite Metcalf on the perimeter. On Tuesday, the front office took a step toward addressing the issue. According to Adam Schefter, the Steelers will host potential starting receiver Gabe Davis on a free-agent visit on Thursday. Davis is coming off the worst year of his career, which culminated in his release from the Jacksonville Jaguars with a failed physical designation. His torn meniscus limited him to just 10 games. In a rudderless Jaguars offense laden with coaching miscues and quarterback changes, Davis managed just 20 catches for 239 yards and two scores. Advertisement Still, it isn't hard to find an optimistic outlook on Davis' game. With the Buffalo Bills, Davis scored 27 touchdowns over the four-year duration of his rookie contract. After two 500-yard campaigns, he took a step forward and posted 836 and 746 yards in 2022 and 2023, respectively. He did so without ever touching 50 receptions in a season. Davis does his best work as a vertical field stretcher whose frame and catch-point prowess make him a threat downfield. That is fairly synonymous with Metcalf, so it's entirely possible that a signing would make him the backup X receiver rather than the starting Z option. Even so, if he's healthy, there's a reasonable chance he improves the receiving corps. Davis' skill set is limited. But if Pittsburgh is just asking him to play for his strengths, the occasional splash play could elevate a concerning passing offense. Schefter also noted that the Steelers checked in on, but are not pursuing, Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith. The Arizona Cardinals are nearing the end of their offseason program, and with this time of year it is when we try to find players who will step up, players who will improve and who will be a surprise. CBS Sports named a player from every NFC team considered a potential "under-the-radar star." Who is that player for the Cardinals? That would be third-year receiver Michael Wilson. Pro Bowl tight end Trey McBride and 2024 fourth overall pick wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. get the spotlight with the Arizona Cardinals, but 2023 third-round pick wide receiver Michael Wilson could be on the verge of a breakout in 2025. He was third on the team in targets (71), catches (47) and receiving yards (548) in 2024, but quarterback Kyler Murray thinks Wilson has the ability to be a 1,000-yard receiver. "Mike [Wilson] is a 1,000-yard receiver. I truly believe Mike can have 1,000 yards and be very comparable to the guys we see doing it year in and year out," Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray said on April 9, via PHNX Cardinals podcast. "It's all about opportunities, staying healthy and the connection we have on the field, but ... he's got it. He can play receiver." Given that kind of belief from his quarterback, Wilson could make a huge leap in the coming season. In two NFL seasons, he has yet to crack 600 yards. Is he under the radar? Certainly. The radar is firmly picking up McBride and Harrison. McBride had a huge 2024 and Harrison is poised to leap forward as a star receiver. But is Wilson going to be an "under-the-radar star?" That is a little much. Could he be a candidate to have an under-the-radar impact? Yes. If McBride and Harrison are both 1,000-yard receivers and James Conner is a 1,000-yard running back again for the third consecutive season, then if Wilson passes 750 yards, he will have become a consistent third option in the passing game, and that would be awesome.
