Five men electrocuted to death during Janmashtami celebrations in Hyderabad
The tragic incident took place at Gokulnagar in Ramanthapur area around midnight, and the deceased were identified as Krishna Yadav (21), Suresh Yadav (34), Srikanth Reddy (35), Rudra Vikas (39), and Rajendra Reddy (45).
'Their bodies were shifted to Gandhi Hospital for postmortem. We are yet to ascertain how the mishap exactly happened. An investigation is on,' an official from the Uppal police station said.
According to the police, the men were taking out a procession of Lord Krishna on a decorated chariot. When the vehicle towing the chariot broke down and was halted on the roadside, a few youngsters began pulling the chariot manually.
'In the process, the chariot touched high-tension power lines. Nine people who were pulling the chariot sustained electric shocks and were flung away by the impact,' the official said.
Locals, who were initially terrified, rushed to provide first aid before shifting the injured to a private hospital nearby. However, doctors confirmed that five had already died.
'The other four injured are undergoing treatment at the same hospital,' the official said, adding that their condition is stable.
Telangana transport minister Ponnam Prabhakar and state Congress president B Mahesh Kumar Goud expressed their condolences over the incident.
'Since it is raining heavily for the last few days, people should take adequate precautions while taking out such processions, as there is every possibility of snapping of electric lines due to rains,' Prabhakar said, adding that the government will extend all possible assistance to the bereaved families.

Diamonds worth Rs 32.5cr stolen from Surat unit
Surat: In one of the biggest diamond thefts in recent memory, rough and polished stones worth Rs 32.53 crore were stolen from a unit in the Kapodra area, after thieves cut open an iron safe. Police suspect the burglary took place sometime between Aug 15 and 17, when most business establishments were closed for the Janmashtami festival and the extended weekend. The thieves also took away the CCTV cameras and DVR from the unit. The unit is owned by Devendra Chaudhary, who runs two firms in the Kapurwadi area under Kapodra police station limits. His family members—including his two sons, wife, and daughter-in-law—are co-owners. Chaudhary also operates another unit in his native Rajasthan. According to the complaint, Chaudhary's manager Hanuman had locked the unit on the afternoon of Aug 15, after which it remained shut for three days. On Monday morning, a neighbouring unit owner alerted Chaudhary that the main gate's lock was broken. A stock verification revealed that 1,12,487 carats of diamonds worth Rs 32.48 crore and Rs 5 lakh in cash were missing. Village pradhan among 4 booked for distributing ‘non-veg' biryani to flood-affected people
A village pradhan and his two sons, along with another person, have been booked for allegedly distributing packets of 'non-vegetarian' biryani to flood affected people in Farrukhabad on the day of the Janmashtami festival on Saturday, when several residents were observing a fast. The matter came to light after some local residents raised objections and informed the police, an officer said on Monday. He said heavy rainfall had led to flooding in the village and nearby areas. It has been alleged that when villagers objected to being served biryani without being informed that it contained meat, the village pradhan, Mohammad Shami, verbally abused them. Circle Officer, Fatehgarh, Rajesh Kumar Dwivedi said three persons including Shami and his son, have been arrested in the case. Efforts are being made to trace the fourth accused, Dwivedi said. Shami is the elected pradhan of Raipur Chinhatpur village. The CO added that the village pradhan and others had gone to distribute food packets among the flood-affected residents. According to the police, a local resident filed a complaint on Sunday alleging that Shami, along with three associates, including his sons Saif Ali and Talib Ali, distributed biryani packets to flood victims. Since it was Janmashtami, many villagers were observing a fast. After accepting the packets, some people began eating the biryani, but soon found 'pieces of meat' in it. When they objected and confronted the pradhan, instead of addressing their concern, he allegedly abused them and remarked that many Hindus now consume meat. The complainant further alleged that people from different communities were threatened and told either to eat the biryani or throw it away. He added that the incident deeply hurt the religious sentiments of many villagers, particularly those who were fasting. During the preliminary inquiry, it was revealed that after the floods, several members of the minority community had gathered at a spot in the village, where the village pradhan distributed the packets. A few of these packets were also given to members of another community, which led to tension, a police officer said. Subsequently, villagers staged a protest demanding the registration of an FIR in the matter. The police registered an FIR at the Kampil police station against Shami, his sons Saif Ali and Talib Ali, and one Mohammad Sami alias Mustafa. The case has been lodged under BNS section 196 (Promoting enmity between different group), 352 (– Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 351 (criminal intimidation).
