ITV commissions drama about phone hacking scandal produced by Mr Bates vs The Post Office team

Independent29-01-2025
A new series on Britain's phone hacking scandal has been commissioned by ITV.
The Hack, a 7-part drama, comes on the back of the success of Mr Bates vs The Post Office and is written and produced by some of the same team behind the Bafta Award-winning show. It will also star Mr Bates' lead, Toby Jones.
Written by Bafta, Tony and Olivier award-winning screenwriter, Jack Thorne, it will also star Doctor Who actor David Tennant and The Full Monty and Trainspotting star Robert Carlyle.
The series will interweave the real life stories of investigative journalist Nick Davies played by Tennant, who discovers evidence of phone hacking at News of the World, and former Met Police detective chief superintendent Dave Cook (Carlyle) as he investigates the unsolved murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan. Jones will play former editor-in-chief of The Guardian, Alan Rusbridger.
Set between 2002 and 2012, the phone hacking scandal blew open unethical practices by journalists, including tapping into the voicemails and phones of celebrities, murder victims and their families, and the royal family. It led to the shutting down of the News of the World after 168 years in operation.
'This is a strange and deceptive piece of our recent history,' said Thorne. 'One with so many layers to it. I thought, as someone who is interested in politics, I understood everything that happened. I did not.'
He added: 'It's a fight for the truth that really shocked me. That is why it matters to tell this story now in an age where the truth seems more in danger than ever. It is a true honour to be bringing this story to the screen alongside David, Robert, Toby, Lewis, Patrick, Joe and Abi. I hope we find a way to do justice to the complexity of what happened and of celebrating the incredible reporting that sits underneath it.'
Thorne's previous credits include His Dark Materials, Enola Holmes, Help, and National Treasure. The show will be directed by Bafta-winner Lewis Arnold, whose previous credits include Time, Sherwood, and The Long Shadow. Executive producer Patrick Spence, who is also managing director of AC Chapter One, will join the team following his success on Mr Bates.
Produced by ITV studios, it will be co-produced with Australian streaming service, Stan in association with AC Chapter One and One Shoe Films. The series is currently in post-production having filmed during 2024. It will air on ITV and STV and be available for streaming on ITVX and STV Player.

Good Morning Britain fans 'switch off' as ITV presenter makes return to show

Good Morning Britain viewers were left unimpressed as they complained about the "worst pairing ever" on Monday's installment of the ITV show. Good Morning Britain fans "switched off" the breakfast show after seeing that one particular ITV presenter had returned to the programme. During Monday morning's episode on August 18, presenter Kate Garraway was joined by Adil Ray to announce the latest news from across the UK and around the world. ‌ They spoke about Europe's leaders flying to Washington to show their support for Ukraine and whether the courts should start to crack down on shoplifting. There was also some debate on a potential tax on the wealth of Britain's top bosses, which has reached a record high. ‌ Kate and Adil were joined in the studio by Sean Fletcher, who presented the rest of the day's news while Laura Tobin delivered regular weather forecasts live from Kew Gardens. However, several GMB fans were left unimpressed by Adil's return to the show with many taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their savage reactions. ‌ After Ben Shephard's exit from the show last year, Adil has been on rotation as a Friday host and usually fronts the ITV programme with either Kate, Laura, or Charlotte Hawkins. However, the Citizen Khan star had not been seen on screen for several weeks, the Mirror reports. After seeing Adil return to the helm on Monday, one viewer brutally remarked on social media: "I'll pass on that thanks". Another also issued a complaint: "Nobody will get a word in with these two presenters. Switches over." A third simply declared: "No thanks," while a fourth remarked: "Worst pairing ever. You can do better than this." ‌ Yet another echoed this sentiment, penning: "Sorry but I will not be watching." Meanwhile, other GMB fans have shared their delight at Adil's appearance with one exclaiming: "Yes! Love Adil! But to be honest all the @GMB presenters are really good." Another chimed in with enthusiasm: "I like this pairing on GMB. At heart, both exceptional interviewers," while a third added: "What a great pair today." ‌ The news comes after Adil unveiled his shocking connection to Hollywood star Lindsay Lohan, sharing that they had a "lovely" dinner together 12 years ago. Lohan recently returned to the screen to reprise her role as Anna Coleman in the sequel of Freakier Friday alongside on-screen mum Jamie Lee Curtis, 23 years after the original 2003 film. ‌ Linday's dinner date with Adil was revealed on air earlier this month after GMB presenter Melvin Odoom got in a cheeky dig at him after he attended the Freakier Friday premiere in London. The former I'm A Celeb star said: "Adil, you know Lindsay right? Are you best mates?" Adil then began to laugh as he replied: "You know when I say things off air, you're not supposed to repeat them." ‌ Filling co-host Kate in, he explained: "Yes, I had dinner with Lindsay. Me and Lindsay, we had dinner together, she's lovely!" Kate was left gobsmacked as she demanded an explanation. She said: "Stop. How did this happen? Where were you?" as cheeky Melvin asked: "Did you slide in the DMs?" ‌ However, Adil insisted that their meet up was not romantic and just came about through a mutual connection. He said: "It wasn't a date, it wasn't a date. We had mutual friends, and we all went out for dinner. "She came along, we happened to sit next to each other, we had a lovely evening, and she's absolutely adorable. "She's a fantastic human, really smart, really intelligent, really well-lived. Just great, great to hang out with her - me and Linz."

BBC Destination X's fate 'revealed' ahead of debut series finale

The future of BBC series Destination X has reportedly been confirmed. Destination X: Darren gets emotional as he chats about his family Reality programme Destination X is poised to return for a second series, according to reports. ‌ Sources have claimed BBC bosses have greenlit another run following a confidential meeting with producers. ‌ They're planning to reveal the news later this month. ‌ A show insider said: "Everyone at the BBC thinks Destination X is a cracking show, so they want to bring it back in 2026. "It's a clear sign that they have faith it could become one of the biggest shows on TV," reports the Daily Star. Rob Brydon is set to be offered a lucrative deal to return as presenter, as they believe he is "perfect" for the programme. Production on the second series is expected to begin within months and creators are already exploring potential filming locations. Destination X has emerged as a viewing phenomenon since debuting last month, and episodes have been attracting more than four million viewers. ‌ It has been demolishing ITV reality programme The Fortune Hotel in its Wednesday and Thursday evening slot. The format originally premiered in Belgium in 2023 and proved enormously popular. Subsequently, versions have launched in The Netherlands, Denmark and the US. ‌ The Mirror has approached the BBC for comment. Speaking of the appeal of doing the show, Rob previously revealed: 'I love the thought of the scale of it, because I've never done anything in television with that scale. We go all over Europe to some fantastic places, so the appeal was working on a show of that scale.' ‌ He added that he took some inspiration from The Traitors host Claudia Winkleman, saying: 'I did look to Claudia on The Traitors, I love the lightness of touch there… I didn't want to get in the way of the show, so I was very aware of that. 'I just wanted to be the bridge between the viewer and the contestants, because people say this, but it's true, they are the stars. 'Their personalities really come out over the course of the series and for me, watching that first one, you see the beginnings of relationships and people's characters blossom.' Destination X is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

Olivia Bowen gives birth as she shares adorable photo and reveals daughter's unique name

Former Love Island star Olivia Bowen has given birth to her second child. Announcing the news on social media, the reality TV star shared a snap of herself cradling her newborn as she gave husband Alex Bowen a kiss. The happy couple were joined by son Abel Jacob as they posed for the announcement. She captioned the snap: "I can't even find the words other than to say our beautiful girl Siena is here, and we are all bursting with love. It wasn't an easy ride but every second worth it a thousand times over. I love my babies. @ab_bowen Olivia was initially expecting twins but earlier this year, the expectant star revealed she had experienced Vanishing Twin Syndrome (VTS), a condition where one embryo is lost in early pregnancy, leaving a single developing foetus. Posting an update to her Instagram followers earlier this month, Olivia disclosed that Sienna's nursery was nearly complete, but with her due date approaching, it's brought up mixed emotions. Olivia, 31, revealed her pregnancy news with a heartwarming video on Instagram featuring her husband and their first child Abel, born in 2022. The couple first crossed paths on the 2016 series of ITV's reality show, finishing as runners-up to winners Cara De La Hoyde and Nathan Massey, who tied the knot in 2019 and are proud parents to son Freddie-George and daughter Delilah. Olivia and Alex exchanged vows in September 2018 and are among the few couples from the show who have stayed together. Olivia has previously opened up about her fears of being "so rubbish as a mum" before Abel's arrival. In an Instagram post marking World Breast Feeding Week shortly after Abel's birth, she confessed: "I never thought I would breast feed. I think where I felt like I was not a maternal person whatsoever before Abel was born, I had serious doubts it would work for me and I also didn't even feel comfortable with the thought of it. "I would go as far as to say it freaked me out a bit. You all know I wasn't sure on having kids and it's mainly because I felt like I would be so rubbish as a Mum, not a maternal bone in my body pre Abel." However, once Abel was born and he latched for the first time in the hospital, it felt incredibly natural. She added: "The bond and connection I feel with him when feeding I will be forever grateful for."
