It's also a day when many businesses will be closed so employees can spend time with family and friends.
Thanksgiving is a government holiday. That means federal offices, courts, and post offices will be closed. Other government institutions - think the DMV and local libraries - will also be closed. In Miami-Dade, all county courts and Clerk of the Courts offices will also be closed on Friday and reopen on Monday.
Thanksgiving is also a banking holiday. The Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange will not be trading. Most bank branches will be closed, but online banking and ATMs will still be available for use.
Don't expect any packages on Thanksgiving day. USPS will be closed. All UPS and FedEx services will be closed except for UPS Express Critical and FedEx Custom Critical.

On Thanksgiving Day, Miami-Dade's transit buses, Metrorail, Metromover and MetroConnect will run on a Sunday schedule. Broward transit buses will also run on a Sunday/holiday schedule. There will be no Breeze or Express services.
Tri-Rail will run on its weekend/holiday schedule.

'New garden shed tax' warning as householders urged to check if they're affected
People have been warned they could face a surprise charge if they have a shed in their garden. An expert said unexpected council tax demands could arise if a common change was made to the garden structure. While the so-called "new garden shed tax" won't apply to everyone, Sam Jenkinson from garden building retailer Tiger, said it was becoming increasingly common across the UK. Sam said: "Government guidance states that a property is considered a separate dwelling and can therefore be assigned its own council tax band if it includes an independent entrance, a kitchen, and a bathroom." While this means most standard garden sheds and log cabins would be exempt, those who've added permanent residential amenities might could face additional costs. Sam continued: "This won't apply to most people but if your shed has been changed to include full-time living facilities, it could be taxed." Local authorities were reportedly examining planning applications, reviewing property sales, and conducting inspections to spot buildings that might qualify as separate homes. "When planning applications are submitted, councils may review them to determine whether a shed could be classified as a separate dwelling," Sam added. "Similarly, when a property changes ownership, councils can review its classification." If a shed was found to meet the requirements, it could be assigned its own council tax band by the Valuation Office Agency. However property owners do have the right to challenge the decision. Sam said: "If your shed is reclassified as a separate dwelling and you believe this is incorrect, you have the right to appeal. "You can provide evidence such as photographs or floor plans to demonstrate that the shed does not have the necessary facilities to qualify as a separate home." Some sheds used by a dependent relative may also be exempt, however Sam recommends checking with your local council to confirm if this applies in your case. He added: "Garden rooms are great for hobbies, working from home, or entertaining, but they can't be used as permanent self-contained accommodation without planning permission. "Adding a bedroom, kitchen or bathroom could mean you need both planning permission and building regulations approval."

U.S. Postal Service issues stamp for irregularly sized cards and invitations SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Aug. 16, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the U.S. Postal Service issued Luna Moth, a nondenominated stamp priced at the non-machineable surcharge rate, at the Great American Stamp Show here. A pale green luna moth graces the new release, which is designed for use on irregularly sized envelopes such as square greeting cards, invitations or announcements. Noted for their lovely green coloring and larger-than-average size, luna moths (Actias luna) are among the most beautiful moths in the United States. The stamps come in panes of 20 and are available at Post Office locations nationwide and online at Stamp design Luna Moth was designed by Derry Noyes, an art director for USPS, using an existing image by artist Joseph Scheer. The stamp features an image of a pale green luna moth with darker edges and eyespots on all four wings. The moth has a white and yellow body with feathery brown antennae between its forewings. Scheer created the image using a high-resolution scanner with extended focus, which allowed him to program in a variety of depths of field at exact points above the scanner glass. As many as 32 layers were scanned individually to ensure that all parts of the preserved moth would appear in sharp focus. These layers were stitched together to create the final image. Near the bottom of the stamp, the words "NON-MACHINEABLE SURCHARGE" appear in uppercase letters directly below the word "USA," which is printed in brown type.
