High School Sports Holiday's stellar return to mound propels American Heritage back to state final four

Talan Holiday just needed one inning to regain his confidence.
Holiday, American Heritage's talented senior ace and University of North Carolina commit, has dealt with multiple injuries this season and hadn't pitched in over three weeks.
But you could have fooled anyone watching Holiday pitch on Wednesday night as he tossed an abbreviated five-inning two-hitter to lead the Patriots to a 10-0 mercy rule win over Miami Belen Jesuit in the second game of the Region 4-4A final series.
Heritage (27-6) secured a 2-0 series sweep over the Wolverines (16-18) and its third consecutive trip to the state final four.
'The whole year I've been dealing with injuries, a hamstring pull in the preseason and then the groin midseason,' Holiday said. 'I'm just grateful to be out here. I just busted my (butt) rehabbing to get back. Things can change in a day so I'm just happy I was out here and we got the win.'
The Patriots, who are trying to win their second state title in three seasons and fourth overall, will next take on Panama City Arnold in a Class 4A state semifinal at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers at either 10 a.m. or 1 on Thursday, May 15. Should Heritage make it to the final, it would play either the winner of Orlando Bishop Moore and Mulberry or Tampa Jesuit, the top seed in Class 4A and the team that beat the Patriots in last year's state final.
'We're playing great baseball this season. We've had some good success. Our pitchers are pitching great and our bats are hitting the ball right now,' American Heritage coach Bruce Aven said. 'You have a veteran team and it's showing up the way we've been playing.'
Heritage pitchers did not allow a run in two games against Belen, outscoring the Wolverines by a combined 15-0 in two games.
Holiday struck out eight and allowed two singles and a walk over five innings and did it on only 56 pitches.
'We weren't sure how much we were going to get out of him tonight, but he pitched great tonight and it's great to have him back,' Aven said. 'He's a difference maker and you're going to have to earn your way to get past him. He came out and pitched tonight and wasn't thinking about his injury at all.'
After a quick first inning, Holiday was tested in the second inning when Belen's Orlando Montiel and David Garrido recorded back-to-back singles with one out. Holiday recovered and retired David Del Pino and Peter Lopez to end the threat.
Holiday isn't the only Heritage player who has made a remarkable comeback from injury, and he so happened to be the catalyst behind all the run support the Patriots provided their ace.
Senior Jordan Rich, who missed nearly all of last season with a shoulder injury he suffered in the fall of 2023 playing for Heritage's football team, went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and three RBI.
'Jordan Rich is the MVP of our season,' Aven said. 'He gets on base, quality at-bats and plays defense. He's our catalyst. His triple took the wind out of them and the guys behind him got big hits.'
Rich set the tone for the Patriots' rout with a leadoff triple and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Joseph Castro.
Heritage then broke the game open with seven runs in the second inning - all coming with two outs.
Rich was once again the spark as he delivered a bases-clearing double. Castro followed with an RBI double. Two batters later, Dylan Dubovik and Blayden Caballero hit back-to-back run- scoring doubles.
Dubovik also had an RBI triple in the fifth and catcher Sebastian Garavito hit an RBI single to score Heritage's 10th run. Holiday then shut the door with a perfect fifth to prompt the mercy rule finish.
'That's my game and my ability. Every time I come out here I trust my ability and let my work speak for itself,' Rich said. 'I feel like the game slowed down for me when I came back. I'm just excited and my decision to play baseball is paying off. I'm with a great group of guys and I just wanna go out and win one with them one last time.'

Mets prospect Jett Williams leaves game after being hit in helmet by pitch
There was a scary moment involving Mets prospect Jett Williams in Friday night's game with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. In the first inning of the Binghamton-Somerset game, Patriots right-hander Carlos Lagrange threw a 1-2 fastball up and in to Williams. However, the pitch, which SNY prospects writer Joe DeMayo clocked at 98 mph, ran in and hit Williams near the ear flap of his batting helmet. Williams collapsed to the ground before he sat up as the trainer checked him out. After a minute or two, Williams got back up and walked off under his own power and was taken out of the game. Advertisement There was no immediate update on Williams' condition and his status moving forward is undetermined. Williams, DeMayo's No. 2 Mets prospect, was having a solid first full season in Double-A. In 47 games, Williams is slashing .277/.381/.446 with four home runs, 12 doubles, 17 stolen bases and an OPS of .827. Entering Friday's game, Williams had a two-game hitting streak going and reached base at least once in the last 10 games.

Patriots Rookie RB Treveyon Henderson Compared to Lions Star Jahmyr Gibbs
Patriots Rookie RB Treveyon Henderson Compared to Lions Star Jahmyr Gibbs originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After a national championship season with the Ohio State Buckeyes, TreVeyon Henderson now finds himself battling for a role on an NFL roster. Advertisement The New England Patriots selected the star running back 38th overall in this year's NFL Draft. Henderson is a versatile back, but with Rhamondre Stevenson returning as the established starter, Henderson's place in the New England offense is up for debate. According to Nick Goss of NBC Boston, the former Buckeyes star could be in for a similar role as Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs, calling him a "do-it-all type." "He [Gibbs] ran the ball 12 times per game as a rookie and 15 times per game in his second season. He also caught about three passes per game both years," Goss wrote. Ohio State's longest run against Akron was a 21-yarder by TreVeyon Cairns/Columbus Dispatch / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Gibbs has displayed incredible speed and versatility in the NFL, while Henderson played many roles for the Buckeyes as well. Gibbs ran a 4.36 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine in 2022, while Henderson ran a 4.43 in this year's combine. Advertisement Goss went on to describe the Patriots' running back room as a position group that could end up being one of their best. "Stevenson can be a top 15 running back when healthy, Gibson is a talented pass-catcher and Henderson could be a do-it-all type," Goss wrote. "It's a real luxury for [Offensive Coordinator Josh] McDaniels to have this much talent and depth to work with." Stevenson is entering his fifth season, while Gibson is entering his sixth. As a young second-round pick, Henderson brings fresh legs to a position that has a short shelf life. His draft status alone will have fans clamoring to see him on the field. Expect Henderson to have some role development through training camp and the preseason. NFL Legend Andrew Whitworth Gives Advice to Patriots' Will Campbell
NFL Legend Andrew Whitworth Gives Advice to Patriots' Will Campbell originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Upon closer observation of Andrew Whitworth's and Will Campbell's backgrounds, it does not come as a shock that the two have developed a strong bond. Advertisement Whitworth and Campbell grew up in Monroe, Louisiana, which is just under 200 miles from the state capital of Baton Rouge, where they both played college football at LSU. They even played the majority of their collegiate snaps at the same position: left tackle. Over the years, the two have engaged in continuous conversation, as Whitworth saw Campbell continue on an upward trajectory that strongly mirrored his own, and Campbell looked up to Whitworth as both a mentor and friend. "I've been in those shoes. So, I think it's important, when you've been there, to give a little love back," Whitworth told Sean T. McGuire. "That's really the dynamic of our relationship. We're from the same place. We've got a lot of respect for each other." Whitworth has remained close to Campbell as he transitions into the next stage of his career, and he offered some advice to Campbell before the New England Patriots youngster begins his journey in the professional ranks. Advertisement "I think one of the biggest things for all young athletes is to continue to be yourself," Whitworth said. "What makes you special? Don't lose sight of that." New England Patriots offensive tackle Will Campbell (66) speaks to the media after rookie camp at Gillette Canha-Imagn Images Whitworth added that he believes Campbell's new surroundings will allow him to succeed on and off the field early in his career. "When you look at Gillette [Stadium], and you look at that setup in Foxborough, that is Monroe and West Monroe, Louisiana, on a much bigger scale," Whitworth said. "The colors, the environment, the setting in the middle of the community... I mean, that is really what the Patriots are in that environment. So, that sense of pride and that element that he's going to be in is going to remind him a lot of playing in North Louisiana." Advertisement Campbell, who the Patriots selected with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, signed a four-year, $43.66 million contract with the team on Tuesday. $28.39 million of that contract was guaranteed as a signing bonus. Campbell was a Consensus All-American, All-SEC First Teamer, and winner of the Jacobs Blocking Trophy (which is awarded annually to the top offensive lineman in the SEC) in his final collegiate season with the Tigers.
