Boan Venter, Tank doubtful for Baa Baas clash
Two of Rassie Erasmus' scrumming powerhouses are set to miss out on the opening match of the new international season.
New recruit Boan Venter and Thomas du Toit will be late additions to the Springbok training camp, and it's likely they won't be considered for the June 28 clash against the Barbarians at Cape Town Stadium.
They will, however, be in contention for the Tests against Italy and Georgia.
According to the SA Rugby website, Venter and Du Toit will report for duty at different stages over the following week, due to what's been termed 'international regulations'.

Erasmus has once again underlined the importance of players making the transition from their franchises to the Springboks, and what the team's playing identity will be this year.
'We've now had time for the players to settle back into our setup from their franchises and clubs,' he said. 'Some of the players had fitness tests [this week] and have been involved in team meetings and been exposed to the way we want to do things on the field after the two alignment camps earlier in the year, so we are confident we'll all be back on the same page.'
Looking ahead to next Saturday, Erasmus says it's been quite tricky preparing for the Barbarians because it's near impossible to analyse how they're likely to play.
'We know it will be a good test for us. They are a team that enjoys playing what they see, but the focus for us in that match will be on our structures. They have included some very experienced campaigners and great players in world rugby in their squad, so it will be a good assignment for us to get back into the swing of things at this level.'
The squad have the next few days off before re-assembling in Cape Town on Sunday to prepare for their first assignment of the international season.

Springboks points machine: Where is Percy Montgomery now?
Percy Montgomery enjoyed a colourful and not always linear career with the Springboks. Where is the Capetonian these days? Montgomery collected 102 caps for South Africa. Along the way, he's seen some pretty cool sights. Frans Steyn 2007 or Handre Pollard 2023? At the start of his career, Percy Montgomery was known for his flashy, flamboyant skills. However, as he matured and settled into his roles for the Springboks, Sharks, Stormers and clubs abroad, Monty became one of the most dependable players in the world. He was often the first name on the team sheet. A career tally of 102 caps and 893 points for South Africa bears testament. Only six players in history pulled on the green & gold jersey more often than Percival Colin Montgomery. No player amassed more points. At his best, Percy was rock-solid as the last defensive line and used his in-game intelligence and tactical smarts to join attacking movements at opportunistic moments. Off the kicking tee, Percy was a metronomic maestro with that abbreviated run-up. 105 of Percy's points for his country came at the 2007 Rugby World Cup when the Boks beat England in the final. Monty led the individual scoring charts that year. THROWBACK: Nelson Mandela and his Springboks drip Former Springbok Percy Montgomery. Photo: AFP Percy had stints with Newport and the Dragons in Wales before a short spell with French outfit Perpignan in 2007. Between 2001 and 2008, he was also a valued member of the Barbarians. Percy is up there with the most capped Springboks in history Percy was the first Springbok to reach a century of caps. Overall, his tally of 102 appearances places him seventh in the all-time reckoning. Only Eben Etzebeth, Victor Matfield, Bryan Habana, Tendai Mtawarira, John Smit and Jean de Villiers have more. Meet the four RWC winners born in the 80s Percy has started a tequila brand, El Centurion 102, paying homage to his Springbok test cap tally and the fact that he was the first to bring up a century. He lives on the Atlantic seaboard of Cape Town. The author of this article was lucky enough to summit Lion's Head with the legendary fullback, alongside a bunch of other patriotic South African rugby lovers. This was an informal gathering to drum up support just before the Springboks travelled to Japan to contest the 2019 Rugby World Cup. That ended pretty well. Percy also coached the SA Rugby Legends vs the Portuguese Barbarians in 2022 in Portugal. For a laugh, you know? Boks ready to rumble against BaaBaas, says Rassie
'They are a team that enjoys playing what they see, but the focus for us in that match will be on our structures. 'They have included some very experienced campaigners and great players in world rugby in their squad, so it will be a good assignment for us to get back into the swing of things at this level. 'Italy will pose a different challenge. They did well in their first two Six Nations matches, but they are a team that we can analyse, though we will not underestimate them. 'I've seen them beat us before, so it will be an important two matches against them. 'Georgia are also a challenging team on a good day, so the key for us will be to drive our own standards.' Erasmus said he was confident Venter would be a good fit for the Boks. 'Boan comes through the Cheetahs ranks and the junior structures in South Africa, and he has also been very consistent for Edinburgh,' he said. 'He knows what to expect from a scrummaging, mauling, and line-out perspective, so we are pretty sure he'll make it. 'We are aware he could have qualified for Scotland, but for us it's not a case of denying opportunities to players abroad. 'We select the best players we can, and with Gerhard Steenekamp and Ntutuko Mchunu nursing injuries, he was the next best player on our radar.' Skipper Siya Kolisi said he was excited to be reunited with his Bok teammates. 'We are looking forward to the season ahead and being back in camp,' he said. 'For most of us, it's hard to say goodbye at the end of each season, so being back together and to see a guy like Lood de Jager [who is back from a long injury layoff], was also great. 'On the field, we are training well, and our sessions are close to match intensity, so we are pleased with how things are going.' Kolisi also congratulated the Proteas for winning the ICC World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord's. 'Their victory was huge, and it's great to see how whenever South Africa plays, the whole nation gets behind them,' he said. 'The way they won was also fantastic, especially since there was a point where many doubted they would pull it through, so it was an admirable team effort, and we are very proud of Temba Bavuma, coach Shukri Conrad, and the entire team.' The Springboks returned home on Thursday to spend time with their families and will reassemble in Cape Town on Sunday for their historic encounter against the Barbarians. The Herald

Springboks flying blind ahead of Barbarians clash in Cape Town
FILE - Rassie Erasmus and his staff find themselves outside of their comfort zone ahead of the Springboks' match against the Barbarians. Image: Backpagepix The Springboks are flying blind ahead of their season opener against the Barbarians at Cape Town Stadium next Saturday. The Baabaas are yet to announce their full squad of players for the match, with only a handful of players confirmed. All Blacks Sam Cane and Shannon Frizell will renew their rivalry with the Boks, while Irish legends Peter O'Mahony, Cian Healy and Conor Murray will also grace the field at the iconic former 2010 FIFA World Cup venue. Normally, Rassie Erasmus and his coaching staff would also have some sort of idea how the opposition will play, having watched footage of the team. But how Robbie Deans' team will play is anyone's guess at this point. Normally the Barbarians are a team who likes to give the ball some air and play exciting running rugby with the odd trick play of set pieces. Analysing the opposition is something Erasmus prides himself on. He likes the finer details and always wants to be well-prepared. But now he can just focus on getting his team ready for the match and for the players to try and limit their mistakes next Saturday. 'We are a team that likes to analyse the opposition. We always do that and Felix plays a massive role in that, especially in finding out what the opposition's strengths and weaknesses are,' Erasmus said this week. 'We can't do this with a Barbarians team, but there are also individuals we know, although they will be very late with announcing some of the individuals that will play for them,' Erasmus said. 'The thing is, when they get together, you tell them to play what they see and be entertaining. If you give them bad kicks they will rip you apart. We will try and play really structured in our way and try to get through the game without any mental scars, because that is something that happens if you are in the Barbarian mindset.'
