South Africa end Boan Venter Scotland Six Nations hopes
He has impressed for the capital side and having joined in 2021 would have qualified to play for Scotland on residency grounds by 2026. But any hopes of having him involved will end when he takes to the field for the Springboks. The Kimberley-born former Cheetahs star was called up last month as part of a 45-man squad for the summer internationals against Italy. But, after not handing Venter any involvement during the two wins, head coach Rassie Erasmus has decided to alter his front row. Venter is due to line up alongside another uncapped duo in Marnus van der Merwe and Neethling Fouche. Read more: South Africa will face the Georgians at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday. Erasmus explained his team selection: 'We wanted to make sure that Siya is 100 per cent fit before selecting him, so it's great to have him back in the squad, while Boan, Marnus, and Neethling have been training hard and deserve their chance. 'Marnus and Neethling played against the Barbarians, so they have an idea of what international rugby is about, while Boan has shown great potential at club level and with the squad in the last few weeks, and we are looking forward to seeing him play. 'Building squad depth has been one of our pillars as a squad since 2018, and they are all undoubtedly ready to make the step-up. 'We know how passionate and intense this Georgian side is, and they will be determined to make a strong statement, so we selected some experienced players who we would like to get more game time before the Castle Lager Rugby Championship, and a few of the younger players, who have put up their hands another run, so we are pleased with the balance we have in this group. 'Georgia are a tough outfit, and they pride themselves on their physicality and brute force in the collisions, so the set pieces, mauls, and breakdowns will be key areas. 'They also have quality backline players to round off their team, so we need to be sharp in all the departments of our game to ensure that we continue to lift our standards, build momentum, and get the desired result.'

Boan Venter, Tank doubtful for Baa Baas clash
Two of Rassie Erasmus' scrumming powerhouses are set to miss out on the opening match of the new international season. New recruit Boan Venter and Thomas du Toit will be late additions to the Springbok training camp, and it's likely they won't be considered for the June 28 clash against the Barbarians at Cape Town Stadium. They will, however, be in contention for the Tests against Italy and Georgia. According to the SA Rugby website, Venter and Du Toit will report for duty at different stages over the following week, due to what's been termed 'international regulations'. READ: Rassie backs Boan to make it with Boks Erasmus has once again underlined the importance of players making the transition from their franchises to the Springboks, and what the team's playing identity will be this year. 'We've now had time for the players to settle back into our setup from their franchises and clubs,' he said. 'Some of the players had fitness tests [this week] and have been involved in team meetings and been exposed to the way we want to do things on the field after the two alignment camps earlier in the year, so we are confident we'll all be back on the same page.' Looking ahead to next Saturday, Erasmus says it's been quite tricky preparing for the Barbarians because it's near impossible to analyse how they're likely to play. 'We know it will be a good test for us. They are a team that enjoys playing what they see, but the focus for us in that match will be on our structures. They have included some very experienced campaigners and great players in world rugby in their squad, so it will be a good assignment for us to get back into the swing of things at this level.' The squad have the next few days off before re-assembling in Cape Town on Sunday to prepare for their first assignment of the international season. ‘Brave little gator' with missing top jaw is thriving at Florida park. See Jawlene
An alligator with a missing upper jaw is thriving at her 'forever home' in Florida almost two years after she was rescued from the wild, a video shows. Someone first spotted the disfigured alligator — now named Jawlene — in August 2023 at a canoe launch about 20 miles north of Orlando and snapped a photo of the creature that soon went viral, McClatchy News reported. 'This brave little gator made headlines around the globe when she was found in the wild here in Florida,' Gatorland international ambassador Savannah Boan said in a March 21 post on Instagram. 'The amazing folks at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission sent legendary trapper Jerry Flynn to rescue her, and he brought her straight to us here at Gatorland Orlando.' The theme park houses a variety of animal habitats, including alligators and crocodiles. Jawlene showed steady signs of improvement that included gaining 2 pounds after only two months there, McClatchy News reported. 'Thanks to our Gatorland Global Conservation Program, Jawlene now lives her best life in alligator paradise!' Boan said in the post. 'She shares a massive habitat with her bestie — an albino red-eared slider turtle named Nelly Wafer — and they get along just fine!' A video shows Boan tossing scraps of meat into — err, onto? — the gator's exposed lower jaw and tongue as an instrumental version of Dolly Parton's 'Jolene' plays softly in the background. One of the pieces of meat doesn't quite make it into her throat and flops over the edge of her jaw into the water in her habitat. 'Jawlene may be missing her top jaw, but she's got a whole lot of fight, a huge fan base, and the love of her forever home right here at Gatorland!' Boan said in the post. Several people commented about how much the young gator has grown since arriving at the facility. 'She's living a good life now,' someone said. 'Look how big she's gotten.' 'It is crazy to believe that she had survived as long as she did in the wild on her own,' someone said. Some called her inspirational. 'She's so darn adorable, what an inspiration she is,' someone said. It's unknown what caused Jawlene's deformity, though it was likely from another gator or predator in the wild, Gatorland staff said in previous videos. 'Jawlene is a testament to the strength and resilience of the American Alligator,' Gatorland Orlando wrote in the caption on a video from December 2023. 'She is a real American treasure, just like Dolly Parton, who sings the song that was the inspiration for Jawlene's name.'
