French President Macron calls Putin ‘predator' and ‘ogre at our gates', warns Europe against trusting him
PARIS, Aug 19 — French President Emmanuel Macron today warned European allies not to trust Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he called 'an ogre at our gates'. Macron's remarks came as Russian and Ukrainian presidents Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky looked set for a peace summit after fast-moving talks yesterday between Donald Trump and European leaders that focused on the key issue of long-term security guarantees for Kyiv. 'Putin has rarely honoured his commitments,' Macron told the LCI broadcaster. 'He has constantly been a force for destabilisation. He has sought to redraw borders to increase his power.' Macron said he did not believe that Russia would 'return to peace and a democratic system from one day to the next'. Putin, 'including for his own survival, needs to keep eating', Macron said. 'That means he is a predator, an ogre at our gates.' This did not mean that France would 'come under attack tomorrow', Macron said, 'but of course this is a threat to Europe (…) let's not be naive.' — AFP

Australia Calls Israel's Move To Cancel Visas For Its Representatives 'Unjustified'
ANKARA, Aug 19 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- Australia on Tuesday called Israel's move to cancel visas of Australian representatives to the Palestinian Authority 'unjustified', Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported. In a statement, Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the Israeli decision is an "unjustified reaction" to Australian move to recognise Palestine. "At a time when dialogue and diplomacy are needed more than ever, the Netanyahu Government is isolating Israel and undermining international efforts towards peace and a two-state solution," she said. bootstrap slideshow She reaffirmed her country's stance to continue to work with partners and contribute international momentum to a two-state solution, a ceasefire in Gaza and release of the hostages. Her statement came after Israel cancelled visas of Australian representatives to the Palestinian Authority on Monday, in response to Australia's decision to recognise a Palestinian state and ban the entry of a far-right Israeli politician. Wong vowed that her country will safeguard their communities and protect all Australians from hate and harm. On Monday, the Australian government cancelled the visa of the chairman of the Knesset's Constitution, Law and Justice Committee, MK Simcha Rotman, barring him from entry to the country for three years over his open support for displacing Palestinians from Gaza and calling Palestinian children Israel's "enemies.' In November 2024, Australia denied a visa to former Israeli Interior and Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked over her support for illegal settlement building in the occupied West Bank. Australia is set to recognise Palestinian statehood next month at the UN General Assembly.

Transport Ministry preparing MoU for extending ERCL to Thailand
KUALA LUMPUR: The Transport Ministry is preparing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cross-border transport between Malaysia and Thailand. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the initiative was aimed at ensuring the realisation of cross-border rail movement. He said the ministry would continue to follow up by refining the best alignment and model of cooperation with Thailand to determine the direction of the proposal. "For this purpose, the ministry took the initiative to communicate with the Thai side. On May 2, the Thai deputy prime minister agreed to meet with the Malaysian transport minister in Bangkok. "The Transport Ministry presented Malaysia's proposal to explore this rail connection with Thailand. Thailand is seen to have given a positive response," he told the Dewan Rakyat today. He was responding to Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN–Pasir Mas) regarding the progress of the study on the extension of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project to Rantau Panjang, Kelantan. Loke said the ministry was in the view that the ECRL should connect to Thailand rather than merely ending in Rantau Panjang, Kelantan, to ensure long-term benefits for the country as well as to mobilise cross-border economic activity for the local population. He said Thailand had responded positively to the proposal and was seeking a way forward and a clear stance from Malaysia's Transport Ministry. Loke said two key matters must be addressed before the proposal could enter the feasibility study phase. "The first is the Thai government's willingness to support this connection, including the infrastructure aspect on the Thai side. "The second thing that needed to be detailed was whether the connection involved should use the ECRL infrastructure or Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB)," he said. He added that the ministry had conducted site visits to the Rantau Panjang KTMB station, Sungai Golok bridge and the Kota Baru ECRL station with representatives from Thailand's Transport Ministry. He said the visits were conducted to assess the current condition of tracks, bridges, stations and other related infrastructure in Rantau Panjang. "This is also important for the government to assess the total cost of the development involved," he said.
