‘No locker breach': SBI denies jewellery theft allegation by Bengaluru woman

Hindustan Times2 days ago

The State Bank of India (SBI) has refuted allegations of missing valuables from a locker at its Dollars Colony branch in Bengaluru, stating that all items reported as lost were later found during a police-led inspection.
The clarification comes after a 54-year-old homemaker, Bindu CD, filed a complaint alleging that 145 grams of gold and diamond jewellery stored in her bank locker had gone missing.
The complaint prompted a police investigation and a First Information Report (FIR) under Section 305(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, pertaining to theft from a dwelling or secure place.

According to SBI's official statement, the Sadashivanagar police conducted a mahazar (panchnama) at the bank in the presence of Bindu, bank staff, and independent witnesses. During the inspection, Bindu opened her locker and found the jewellery intact. The bank said that certain items had been 'inadvertently overlooked' by the complainant as they were stored deep within the locker.
The entire process was videographed by authorities to ensure transparency. Following standard procedure, the locker contents were temporarily taken into police custody, the statement said.

SBI maintained that there was no evidence of tampering, unauthorized access, or breach of protocol. 'All locker access protocols and security procedures at the Dollar Colony Branch were fully operational and uncompromised at all times,' the statement added.
Earlier, Bindu had approached the bank multiple times and even escalated the issue to SBI's chief vigilance officer after she claimed the staff had not responded adequately. After exhausting internal grievance channels, she lodged a police complaint on March 28.

Bombay Lawyers Association seeks CJI's sanction to prosecute Allahabad HC Judge Justice Varma under corruption charges

New Delhi, June 3 (UNI) The Bombay Lawyers Association (BLA) has submitted a formal request to Chief Justice of India (CJI) B R Gavai seeking permission to initiate criminal proceedings against Justice Yashwant Varma, a sitting judge of the Allahabad High Court, in relation to an alleged recovery of unaccounted cash from his official residence earlier this year. In its representation dated June 2, the Association has requested the CJI's sanction for registration of a First Information Report (FIR) under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. The letter, signed by BLA President Advocate Ahmed Abdi and Secretary Advocate Eknath R Dhokale, asserts that there is credible material, comprising video footage and photographic evidence, indicating the commission of a cognizable offence. It states, 'The applicant seeks your Lordship's approval for registration of an FIR against Justice Yashwant Varma under applicable provisions of anti-corruption law, in light of the alleged seizure of unaccounted cash from his government residence.' The letter invokes the principle of equality before the law, asserting that the judiciary, too, must be subject to legal accountability. The BLA has pointed out that despite the reported severity of the incident, no formal FIR has yet been filed, nor has there been any official seizure memo or panchnama. The Association has drawn attention to the landmark constitutional judgment in K Veeraswami versus Union of India (1991), where a Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court held that judges are considered 'public servants' under the Prevention of Corruption Act and can be prosecuted with prior sanction from the Chief Justice of India. Citing procedural inaction and risk of evidence tampering, the BLA has urged the CJI to take prompt steps to secure and preserve all material evidence, including partially burnt currency notes, videos, and photographs of the location in question. The Association has also asked that either the Delhi Police or the Central Bureau of Investigation be directed to act on the matter. The letter adds, 'Delay in initiating proceedings risks compromising key evidence. The absence of a seizure report, FIR, or panchnama raises serious concerns about transparency in the ongoing inquiry.' The BLA has further requested access to the report of the in-house inquiry committee that was constituted following the incident. The developments stem from an incident on March 14, 2025, when a fire broke out at Justice Varma's official government residence at 30, Tughlak Road, New Delhi. At that time, Justice Varma was serving as a judge of the Delhi High Court. During firefighting operations, emergency services allegedly found approximately Rs 15 crore in partially burnt cash. In response, then-CJI Justice Sanjiv Khanna constituted a three-member in-house inquiry committee on March 22, consisting of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu (Punjab & Haryana High Court), Chief Justice G S Sandhawalia (Himachal Pradesh High Court) and Justice Anu Sivaraman (Karnataka High Court) The committee submitted its findings to the CJI on May 3, reportedly holding Justice Varma culpable. A press release issued by the Supreme Court on May 8 confirmed that both the committee's report and Justice Varma's written response dated May 6 had been forwarded to the President and Prime Minister for further action. Justice Varma was later transferred to the Allahabad High Court on March 28 and relieved of all judicial duties pending the inquiry's conclusion. Earlier, a petition filed in the Supreme Court seeking immediate registration of an FIR was dismissed on May 21, with the bench holding that the plea was premature. However, the petitioners were allowed to approach the appropriate authorities. The matter now awaits the CJI's decision on the BLA's request for prosecution sanction. UNI SNG SS

Ahmedabad: A 37-year-old woman from Navrangpura was allegedly chased and harassed by a scooterist who went on to damage her car's windshield near the Sabarmati Chimanbhai Patel Bridge late on Monday night. Her five-year-old daughter was also in the car at the time. The woman filed a complaint with Ranip police on Tuesday, leading to the arrest of the man who was identified as Jayesh Sadhnani, 23, a resident of Kubernagar. According to the FIR, around 10.30pm on Monday, the woman was returning home from Vaishnodevi Circle with her daughter. As she reached Chimanbhai Patel Bridge, she saw Sadhnani on an electric two-wheeler chasing her and making obscene gestures, the FIR states. As she felt unsafe, she kept driving while Sadhnani continued to chase her. When she neared the RTO Circle, he suddenly overtook her and blocked her car. As she braked the vehicle, Sadhnani approached the driver's side of the car, banged on the window and tried to force the door open. The woman and her five-year-old daughter panicked and did not unlock the doors. In response, he allegedly punched the car's front windshield and shattered it. Passersby who witnessed the incident rushed to help the woman, caught Sadhnani, and called up police and Abhayam women's helpline. A team of Ranip cops took Sadhnani into custody. The woman said in the FIR that she estimated the damage to her car to be around Rs 35,000. Ranip police booked Sadhnani under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for mischief causing damage and attempting to outrage the modesty of a woman.

Prayagraj: The Allahabad high court has stayed the arrest of the producer of music albums who was accused of abducting a woman who had signed an agreement to work in his album as an actor. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Staying the arrest, a division bench comprising Justice Siddharth and Justice Ram Manohar Narayan Mishra also issued a notice to first informant, Sushmita Yadav, who is the sister of the artist. According to the prosecution, Sushmita Yadav informed the police that her sister, Anupama Yadav, was in a relationship with an album producer Sunil Yadav (petitioner) and they were going to get married in April. On Feb 19, 2025, Sunil Yadav came to her residence and said that he had to go to Nepal for wedding shopping and took Anupama with him. After two hours, Anupama called her brother, Surya Kumar Yadav, and informed him that Sunil was not taking her to Nepal but to Bihar. After that, Anupama's mobile phone was found to be switched off. On Feb 22, 2025, Sunil Yadav took the call of Sushmita and informed her that Anupama was not with him. Sushmita lodged an FIR against Sunil the next day. The petitioner alleged that Sushmita and Anupama were running a racket, extorting money by blackmailing innocent people. The counsel for the petitioner, Manoj Yadav, submitted that Sunil produced albums and on Anupama's request, he agreed to give her a role and gave her Rs 6-7 lakh. "When the petitioner asked Anupama to work in the album or return his money, she cooked up a fabricated story of her abduction," he said, claiming that the case registered against Sunil Yadav was fake and liable to be quashed by the high court. The court, in its order dated May 27, said that matter required consideration and restrained the arrest of the petitioner in pursuant to the FIR dated Feb 23, 2025, under Section 87 (kidnapping, abducting or inducing a woman to compel her for marriage) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Kotwali police station in Deoria district, subject to cooperation in the investigation.
