Federal grand jury indicts New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell after long corruption probe
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell listens during a meeting after Hurricane Francine at New Orleans International Airport, Sept. 13, 2024, in Kenner, La. (Hilary Scheinuk/The Advocate via AP, Pool) NEW ORLEANS -- A federal grand jury indicted New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell on Friday after a long corruption investigation. Cantrell's lawyer, Eddie Castaing, confirmed to The Associated Press that an indictment was returned, and her name was read aloud by a federal magistrate judge as a defendant. The charges weren't immediately known. The indictment is the culmination of a long-running federal investigation into Cantrell, the first female mayor in the City's 300-year history. Cantrell, who is term-limited, will leave office in January. The Democrat has clashed with City Council members during a turbulent second term and survived a recall effort in 2022. She hasn't sent out a message on her official feed on X, formerly known as Twitter, since July 15, when she touted that the city was experiencing historical declines in crime. As Cantrell heads into her final months in office, she's alienated former confidants and supporters, and her civic profile has receded. Her early achievements were eclipsed by self-inflicted wounds and bitter feuds with a hostile city council, political observers say. The mayor's role has weakened following voter-approved changes to the city's charter meant to curb her authority. Cantrell and her remaining allies allege that she's been unfairly targeted as Black woman and held to a different standard than male officials, her executive powers sabotaged. Earlier this year, Cantrell said she's faced 'very disrespectful, insulting, in some cases kind of unimaginable' treatment. --- By Jim Mustian, Jack Brook And Heather Hollingsworth THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Far-right Israeli minister confronts long-imprisoned Palestinian leader face to face
TEL AVIV, Israel — A video widely circulated on Friday shows Israel's far-right national security minister berating a Palestinian leader face-to-face inside a prison, saying anyone who acts against the country will be 'wiped out.' Marwan Barghouti is serving five life sentences after being convicted of involvement in attacks at the height of the Palestinian uprising, or intifada, in the early 2000s. Polls consistently show he is the most popular Palestinian leader. He has rarely been seen since his arrest more than two decades ago. It was unclear when the video was taken, but it shows National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, known for staging provocative encounters with Palestinians, telling Barghouti that he will 'not win.' 'Anyone who murders children, who murders women, we will wipe them out,' Ben-Gvir said. Ben-Gvir's spokesman confirmed the visit and the video's authenticity, but denied that the minister was threatening Barghouti. Barghouti, now in his mid-60s, was a senior leader in President Mahmoud Abbas' secular Fatah movement during the intifada. Many Palestinians see him as a natural successor to the aging and unpopular leader of the Palestinian Authority, which administers parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Israel considers him a terrorist and has shown no sign it would release him. Hamas has demanded his release in exchange for hostages taken in the Oct. 7, 2023, attack that triggered the war in the Gaza Strip. In a Facebook post, Barghouti's wife said she couldn't recognize her husband, who appeared frail in the video. Still, she said after watching the video, he remained connected to the Palestinian people. 'Perhaps a part of me does not want to acknowledge everything that your face and body shows, and what you and the prisoners have been through,' wrote Fadwa Al Barghouthi, who spells their last name differently in English. Israeli officials say they have reduced the conditions under which Palestinians are held to the bare minimum allowed under Israeli and international law. Many detainees released as part of a ceasefire in Gaza earlier this year appeared gaunt and ill, and some were taken for immediate medical treatment. ——— The Associated Press

The Zacks Analyst Blog Highlights Intel, NVIDIA, AMD and Cadence Design Systems
For Immediate Release Chicago, IL – August 15, 2025 – announces the list of stocks featured in the Analyst Blog. Every day the Zacks Equity Research analysts discuss the latest news and events impacting stocks and the financial markets. Stocks recently featured in the blog include: Intel Corp. INTC, NVIDIA Corp. NVDA, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. AMD and Cadence Design Systems, Inc. CDNS. Here are highlights from Thursday's Analyst Blog: Should You Buy Intel Stock After President Trump's CEO Praise? Intel Corp. has laid out bold strategies for its turnaround as it faces stiff competition from the likes of NVIDIA Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. in the artificial intelligence (AI) data center market. Amid these developments, President Donald Trump's inconsistent stance on Intel CEO has drawn investors' interest toward the semiconductor giant. Is it time for investors to adopt a bullish outlook on Intel stock? Let's see – Trump's Admiration for Tan – What It Means for INTC Investors Last month, Cadence Design Systems, Inc. acknowledged committing a crime by unlawfully exporting semiconductor design tools to a manufacturer in China that has connections to the Chinese military. Cadence agreed to pay $140 million for violating U.S. export controls. On Aug. 8, Republican Senator Tom Cotton noted that when these transfers took place, Intel's current CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, was leading Cadence. Trump learned of Cotton's letter shortly afterward and urged Tan to step down immediately. However, on Aug. 7, Tan responded to Cotton's letter, calling it misinformation, and reaffirmed his commitment to U.S. security interests. He met with Trump at the White House, where he verified that Intel's investments are in harmony with the President's expressed goals. In reaction, Trump commended Tan's achievements, referring to his success and ascent as an "amazing story." Trump also endorsed Tan's leadership role at Intel. This is positive news for Intel investors. If Tan had to resign, it could have caused further turmoil at Intel during a critical period. Let's not forget, Tan is a well-known venture capitalist, respected for his expertise in the semiconductor industry. Is a Turnaround for Intel Probable Soon? Intel's business has been struggling for quite some time. Despite Tan's initial initiatives to restore stability at Intel, the company reported total revenues of $12.9 billion for the second quarter, almost flat with the year-ago levels. Its revenues from subsidiaries such as Altera and Mobileye may have increased, but its product revenues fell 1% to $11.8 billion in the second quarter. Revenues from the foundry business rose. However, the segment reported an operating loss of $3.2 billion in the second quarter. It's worse than the $2.8 billion loss that the segment posted a year ago. Intel's gross margin remained under pressure as it reported $4.5 billion in capital expenditure (capex) to scale its foundry business. It ended the quarter with $50.7 billion in debt. On the other hand, cash and short-term investments accounted for only $21.2 billion. However, under Tan's strong leadership, Intel is exploring strategies to cut costs and enhance profit margins. Tan is optimizing the management team and reducing the workforce to lower operating expenses. Additionally, Tan is scaling back capital expenditures, having already canceled fabrication facilities in Germany and Poland, and plans to slow down the construction of a new plant in Ohio. Intel is planning to provide a full-stack AI solution, including graphics processing units (GPUs) and central processing units (CPUs). Intel is embracing its new 18A process at its manufacturing facilities, which will serve a minimum of three generations of its clients. Additionally, the company is securing a major customer for its 14A node. While all these ambitious initiatives may not lead to a quick turnaround for Intel, as shown by the latest quarterly results, they will eventually have a positive effect on the company's business. In time, the semiconductor giant has the potential to regain its former glory. Should You Buy INTC Stock Now or Wait a While? Trump's support for Tan and his efforts to improve operations, provide a competitive AI platform, and divest assets should motivate stakeholders to remain invested in Intel stock. Furthermore, Intel's price-to-book (P/B) ratio is slightly above 0.9, indicating that the stock has a limited risk of decline and potential for gains in the future. However, new investors should remain passive and watch for meaningful progress. This is because it's too early to predict the potential success of Tan's initiatives, and Intel's financials merely show improvement. For now, Intel has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
