Veteran Australian spinner Nathan Lyon has backed Jack Leach as England's premier spinner, despite the emergence of Shoaib Bashir and Jacob Bethell. Lyon said Leach's control and experience still make him the most dependable option in the current setup.Lyon, one of Australia's top Test wicket-takers, admitted he felt flattered when James Anderson said Bashir was chosen to play a role similar to his. However, he maintained that Leach remains England's best bet.advertisementAlso Read: India will be tough to beat at home in Women's ODI World Cup: Alyssa Healy
While Bashir has impressed and Bethell gets his chance in the fifth Test at The Oval, Lyon's words underline the respect Leach commands at the highest level."I obviously played with Jimmy Anderson last year at Lancashire, and they basically said that they're picking Bashir to do what I do. So I took a little bit of pride out of Jimmy respecting a little bit of what I've been able to do in my career. But Bashir has been okay,' Lyon said at a Cricket Australia sponsorship announcement in Sydney."Jacob Bethell is playing this Test match [at The Oval against India], and he looks like he'll take up the spin bowling from Liam Dawson. But in my eyes, Jack Leach is still their best spinner,' Lyon added.Jack Leach shining for EnglandLeach has played 39 Test matches for England, taking 142 wickets at an average of 34.07, with best figures of 5 for 66. He debuted in March 2018 vs New Zealand and last appeared in a Test in Pakistan at Rawalpindi from 24-28 October 2024.Since that tour, England have not selected him: he last played Tests in October 2024 in Pakistan. Over his career, Leach gained fame for his dramatic unbeaten one-run cameo in the 2019 Headingley Ashes Test, helping England chase down a record 359 runs.In county cricket, he remains in form: in 2025 he claimed 39 Championship wickets at 25.66 average, including two six-wicket hauls.- EndsMust Watch

Women's World Cup at Chinnaswamy in doubt as ICC, BCCI fret; KSCA awaits government nod post RCB parade stampede: Report

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) have been left anxious about the schedule of the upcoming Women's ODI World Cup, with the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) yet to receive clearance from the state government to host matches at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium. Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium The eight-team, 50-over tournament is scheduled to be held in India from September 30 to November 2, with the opening match between India and Sri Lanka set to take place in Bengaluru. The venue is also slated to host three other fixtures, including one of the semifinals. However, according to a report by Cricbuzz, uncertainty now clouds those matches, as the KSCA awaits official permission in the wake of the tragic stampede that occurred during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory parade in June. Following the opener, the next game is between England and South Africa on October 3, India versus Bangladesh on October 26 and the second semifinal on October 30. 'Idhar hi maar isko': Virat Kohli and KL Rahul's fired-up advice to young pacer goes viral

Virat Kohli and KL Rahul (Image credit: AFP) NEW DELHI: Indian pacer Harshit Rana recently opened up about a heated on-field exchange with Australian speedster Mitchell Starc during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he peppered Starc with bouncers before dismissing him for 26 — all while receiving spirited backing from senior pros Virat Kohli and KL Rahul . The duel ignited when Rana unleashed a barrage of short balls at Starc, one of which struck the Aussie on the helmet. Starc, also his Kolkata Knight Riders teammate in the IPL, responded with a trademark smirk and a warning: Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "Harshit, I bowl faster than you. I've got a long memory." Speaking on the BeerBiceps podcast, Rana shared his thoughts during that tense moment, admitting a mix of adrenaline and fear as he walked back to his mark. 'I bowled him a bouncer after a long time. One hit his helmet. When he sledged, I just laughed. But while walking back, I thought, 'Mar gaya, ab ye mujhe bouncer maarega!'' Poll Do you believe that the rivalry between India and Australia adds excitement to cricket? Absolutely! Not really, it's just another match. 'And then from behind, Virat bhai and KL bhai were shouting from the slips — 'Maarta reh, maarta reh, idhar hi maar isko!' I thought, 'Bhaiya aap toh bach jaoge, mere toh lagne wali hai!'' Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj press conference: India stars answer all questions As fate would have it, Starc did retaliate later, striking Rana on the helmet during the second Test. But the young Indian pacer took it in stride, chalking it up to the spirit of the contest. Rana's journey with the Indian team has had its ups and downs. While he has impressed in phases — including his stint in Australia — consistency at the international level has remained elusive. Most recently, he was part of the Test squad against England as a backup but was later released. Nevertheless, Rana remains an active contributor in white-ball formats and was a member of the Indian side that clinched the Champions Trophy.
