Renault's CEO search may include insider Le Vot, Stellantis' Picat, analysts say

CTV News7 hours ago

LONDON — Luca de Meo's abrupt departure as Renault CEO has kicked off a search for his successor, with analysts mentioning longtime insider Denis Le Vot and Maxime Picat of rival Stellantis as suitable fits to continue the French automaker's turnaround.
Renault shares fell as much as eight per cent on Monday, their biggest one-day percentage drop since February 2022, as investors worried about the company's future without de Meo at the helm. Shares in Kering, where he will become CEO, rallied.
Picat, who is head of global purchasing and supply chains at Stellantis, had been in the running for the chief executive officer post at the world's No. 4 automaker. One of two internal candidates, he lost out to Antonio Filosa.
Executive vice president Le Vot joined Renault from university and has run its low-cost Dacia brand since May 2022.
Analysts at French brokerage Kepler Cheuvreux said both men could be potential successors, whilst JP Morgan analyst Jose Asumendi noted Renault's 'strong bench' of brand managers, including at Dacia.
'We (...) also would envision potential external candidates from (other companies) such as Stellantis, VW Group, Nissan, amongst other competitors,' he said.
Le Vot and Picat, who are both French nationals, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Renault declined to comment on its succession plans.
Whoever succeeds de Meo will have to hit the ground running.
Although he revived Renault and overhauled its strategic alliance with Nissan 7201.T during his five years as CEO, like other traditional automakers it faces rising competition from Chinese rivals. The company must also lean on partnerships because it is smaller than most other mainstream manufacturers.
De Meo's departure will add to concerns about Renault's ability to remain independent, said Jefferies analysts, a perennial challenge in an industry built on scale.
Renault was the world's No. 15 automaker by sales in 2024, according to data compiled by industry analyst Felipe Munoz, down from 14th spot in 2023.
In recent years, it has been overtaken by Chinese automakers, Geely, Chery and Changan is likely to surpass it in sales this year.
To make up for its small size as the auto industry wrestles with the huge expense of going electric, Renault under de Meo teamed up with a number of partners and investors including Google, Qualcomm and China's Geely.
The partnerships have helped reduce costs, but labor unions claim they threaten the company's in-house know-how.
Insider Vs Outsider
Under Le Vot's leadership, the Dacia brand has performed well thanks to its Sandero and Duster models.
In April, the subcompact Sandero was Europe's No. 2 selling car - behind the Renault Clio - and the Duster SUV was No. 7, according to research firm JATO Dynamics.
Le Vot had previous management stints in Turkey and Russia, where he was chief operating officer from 2011 to 2013, and ran North American operations at alliance partner Nissan 7201.T, where he oversaw the launch of the new Altima sedan in 2018.
Picat has spent his entire career at PSA and then Stellantis, formed when the French group merged with FCA in 2021.
He was head of the Peugeot brand from 2012, where he oversaw the launch of two of its bestsellers, the 2008 and 3008 SUVs.
A Stellantis source who knows Picat said he didn't know if he was interested in the top job at Renault, but that he would 'not be surprised' if he was talking to the French automaker.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, said it would be normal for an executive to look elsewhere after losing the race to become CEO.

Stellantis marks 100 years in Canada with centennial celebration in Windsor

Stellantis Canada is celebrating a century of operations in the country, marking 100 years to the day since Chrysler Canada was incorporated in Windsor, Ont., on June 17, 1925. To honour the milestone, the company will host a special Family Day event on Sunday, June 22 at the Windsor Assembly Plant for employees, retirees and their families. A public car show, organized by Cars & Coffee Windsor, will also take place along Chrysler Centre Road beginning at 9 a.m., with proceeds supporting the Canadian Transportation Museum and Heritage Village. 'As we celebrate a century of operations here in Canada, we are incredibly proud of our legacy,' said Jeff Hines, president and CEO of Stellantis Canada. 'We have evolved from our humble beginnings in 1925 with just 181 employees and 4,500 vehicles built, to nearly 9,000 current employees and 440 dealers coast to coast, having built more than 25 million vehicles.' Founded just 11 days after Chrysler Corporation was established in Detroit, officials say the Canadian arm has played a key role in shaping the national and international automotive landscape. 'Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey,' Hines added. 'Here's to the next 100 years!' Special signage highlighting the company's Canadian roots and customer loyalty — with the tagline 'You didn't just ride along. You drove us.' — will be unveiled around the plant as part of the celebrations. The Chrysler brand is also marking the occasion with the launch of the assembled-in-Windsor 2026 Chrysler Pacifica 100th Anniversary Edition, available for order starting this month. The vehicle features unique styling elements and comes in gas or plug-in hybrid powertrains, starting at $59,190 in Canada. Earlier this month, on the day of Chrysler's centennial, Stellantis COO of the Americas Antonio Filosa visited the Windsor Assembly Plant to commemorate the occasion with employees. 'Today, we recognize and honour Walter P. Chrysler's vision that has led to a full century of innovation, engineering excellence, and beautiful design, all at an accessible price,' Filosa told employees. 'This isn't a milestone we've reached on our own - it's a credit to every worker that came before us, every dealership, every family that chose us.' (Source: Stellantis) During the June 6 visit, Filosa joined Chrysler Brand CEO Chris Feuell in unveiling a commemorative mural created by a Windsor employee. Workers marked the celebration by signing the mural and adding thumbprints. 'Each one of us can take great pride in having a role in the company's legacy,' Filosa said. 'Together, we've contributed to a century of bold ideas, iconic vehicles and unforgettable moments. 'And we're not done yet,' he added. 'We will continue to carry forward our founder Walter P. Chrysler's vision of leading with new innovations, engineering excellence and continued investment in the future.' Stellantis Canada currently operates major manufacturing facilities in Windsor, Brampton, and Etobicoke, as well as a research and development centre in Windsor — home to the soon-to-be-launched Stellantis North America Battery Technology Centre. The company is also part of NextStar Energy, a joint venture with LG Energy Solution, developing Canada's first large-scale lithium-ion battery production facility in Windsor.

NBIS vs. AMZN: Which AI-Infra Stock Seems a Better Pick at the Moment?

Nebius Group N.V. NBIS is an upcoming player in the AI-infrastructure market, while Amazon AMZN is an established tech behemoth. NBIS is a GPU-focused cloud platform, while Amazon dominates the AI cloud space through Amazon Web Services or AWS, the world's leading cloud provider, integrating AI capabilities at scale. Per an IDC report, spending on AI infrastructure is expected to top $200 billion by 2028. This uptrend in spending benefits both Amazon and Nebius, but not equally. So, if an investor wants to make a smart buy in the AI infrastructure space, which stock stands out? Let's break down how each company is performing and which one looks like the better investment right now. Nebius: A Fast-Growing Pure-Play AI Infra Provider Amsterdam-based Nebius is positioning itself as a specialized AI infrastructure company. NBIS also builds full-stack infrastructure for AI, like large-scale GPU clusters, cloud platforms, and tools and services for developers. Collaboration with Saturn Cloud and deeper NVIDIA integration boosts bodes well. NBIS is doubling down on AI infrastructure with an ambitious $2 billion capital expenditure plan for 2025, up from its earlier guidance of $1.5 billion. NBIS stated that the increase was primarily due to some planned fourth-quarter spending shifting into the early first quarter. Nebius is focusing on building a global footprint, with capacity in the United States, Europe and the Middle East amid accelerating demand for its AI-infrastructure services. It added three new regions, including a strategic data center in Israel, in the last reported quarter. In June 2025, NBIS announced private placement of $1 billion in convertible notes to capitalize on the AI-infrastructure boom and drive-up revenue opportunities in 2026. It recently announced the general availability of NVIDIA GB200 Grace Blackwell Superchip capacity for its customers in Europe. NBIS plans to build a data-center infrastructure pipeline that can offer scalability to more than 1 gigawatt ('GW') of capacity. With 1 GW of power, NBIS expects significantly higher revenues beyond its current guidance. To gain a larger share of the AI cloud compute market, NBIS is focusing on technical enhancements that increase reliability and reduce downtime to boost customer retention. In the first quarter, Nebius significantly upgraded its AI cloud infrastructure through improvements to its Slurm-based cluster and its object storage capabilities. The upgraded storage system ensures that big data sets can be easily accessed and saved quickly during model training, directly lowering time-to-result for end users. NBIS successfully graduated multiple platform services like MLflow and JupyterLab Notebook from beta to general availability. Nebius expanded integrations with external AI platforms like Metaflow, D Stack and SkyPilot, enabling customers to migrate tools with nominal friction. Nebius remains confident in achieving its full-year ARR guidance of $750 million to $1 billion. For 2025, the company also reaffirmed its overall revenue guidance of $500 million to $700 million. Nonetheless, the intense competition from behemoths remains a concern, along with profitability Management reaffirmed that adjusted EBITDA will be negative for the full year 2025. Though it added that adjusted EBITDA will turn positive at 'some point in the second half of 2025.' Amazon: Dominant Force With Its AWS Platform While NBIS is an early-stage player, Amazon is one of the dominant names in the AI cloud infrastructure space with its AWS platform. AWS revenues surged 17% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2025, with an annualized revenue run rate pegged at $117 billion. AWS backlog reached $189 billion with a 4.1-year weighted average life, offering forward revenue visibility. In the last reported quarter, AWS signed new agreements with major companies, including Ericsson, Adobe, Uber Technologies, Nasdaq, Fujitsu and many others. Amazon highlighted that more than 85% of global IT spending is still on-premises, suggesting immense growth potential for AWS. More significantly, Amazon's AI business segment now operates at a multi-billion-dollar annual revenue run rate with triple-digit percentage growth year over year. Amazon's strategy focuses on custom silicon development, particularly its Trainium 2 chips, which offer 30-40% better price performance compared to GPU-based instances. The company has also expanded its AI model offerings through Amazon Bedrock and introduced services like Amazon Nova foundation models. AMZN has added the latest foundation models in Amazon Bedrock, including Anthropic's Claude 3.7 Sonnet, Meta's Llama 4 family of models, DeepSeek's R1 and Mistral AI's Pixtral Large. AMZN is ramping up investment to boost its AI market share. It recently announced it plans to invest up to $20 billion in Pennsylvania to expand its data center infrastructure for AI and cloud computing. Before that, it allocated $10 billion in investments to expand cloud computing infrastructure in North Carolina. However, capacity constraints pose a challenge. Amazon has indicated that AI demand currently outstrips available capacity, suggesting the company could drive higher revenues with additional infrastructure. The intense competition from Microsoft's Azure and Google Cloud is concerning. Heavy capex spend could strain margins if AI returns do not materialize. NBIS Shares More Resilient Than AMZN AMZN shares have gained 2.9% while NBIS' stock has appreciated 25.5%. Valuation for AMZN & NBIS Valuation-wise, both Amazon and Nebius are overvalued, as suggested by the Value Score of D and the Value Score of F, respectively. In terms of Price/Book, NBIS shares are trading at 3.52X, lower than AMZN's 7.36X. How Do Zacks Estimates Compare for NBIS & AMZN?
