Nashik: Police detain man for running illegal gas refilling centre

Time of India18-06-2025

Nashik: The Nashik city police have detained a person operating an illegal gas refill centre on the Wadala-DGP Road.
Authorities also seized property worth over Rs1 lakh, including 4 domestic Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders, an electronic gas refilling machine, a gas regulator, and a weighing machine.
The central crime branch, led by inspector Anchal Mudgal, busted the operation. The crackdown followed instructions from police commissioner Sandeep Karnik to investigate illegal businesses within the city.
On Tuesday, while patrolling the Mumbai Naka, Indiranagar, and Upnagar areas, assistant police inspector Pravin Mali received a tip-off about the illicit refilling station. Police immediately raided the tin shed facility, finding two individuals refilling LPG from a domestic cylinder into an autorickshaw.
Last month, the crime branch unit 2 had raided an illegal gas refill centre in the Nashik Road area and seized 63 domestic gas cylinders. Three people were detained, besides seizure of gas cylinders and machinery worth over Rs2.5 lakh. In April, the city police had detained two people and recovered 13 gas cylinders, three motors, and three weighing machines, all worth Rs1.2 lakh. The illegal gas refill centre was in Shramik Nagar area of Satpur.

Man wrongly jailed in missing wife's 'murder case' seeks Rs 5 cr compensation

A Mysuru man falsely accused of murdering his wife, who was later found alive, has approached the High Court seeking Rs 5 crore as compensation for wrongful imprisonment and loss of reputation. The petitioner, Suresh—a member of a tribal community—was arrested and jailed for 18 months after his wife Mallige went missing from Basavanahalli in Kushalnagar, under the jurisdiction of Madikeri Rural Police. The case dates back to 2020, when he filed a missing person complaint regarding his wife from Basavanahalli in Kushalnagar, Madikeri. Based on skeletal remains later recovered in the area, Bettadapura police registered a case and charged Suresh under Sections 498A (cruelty), 302 (murder), and 201 (destruction of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code, accusing him of mentally and physically harassing his wife and killing her on October 19, 2020. Despite forensic reports showing no genetic match between the bones and Mallige, police proceeded with charges. A chargesheet was filed, and Suresh was imprisoned. The trial court later acquitted Suresh in April 2025 after Mallige was found alive and seen dining at a restaurant in Madikeri with another man. Despite the trial court clearing him of all charges, Suresh argues that the court failed to formally recognize him as a 'victim' in its ruling. Following the acquittal, the trial court had directed the Home Department to pay Suresh Rs one lakh as compensation and asked the Bettadapura police to remove his name from the FIR. The court also recommended departmental inquiry against officers involved in the faulty investigation—Inspector B.G. Prakash, DYSP Jitendra Kumar, and Inspectors Prakash Yattimani and B.G. Mahesh—for tampering with records and fabricating evidence. In his High Court petition, Suresh contended that the Rs1 lakh compensation was insufficient. 'I have lost 1.5 years of my life behind bars for a crime I never committed. I suffered severe social stigma and loss of dignity. The government must pay Rs5 crore in damages and take action against the erring officers,' he said. Suresh has also sought that official records reflect his status as a victim rather than an accused. The High Court is expected to take up the case for hearing shortly. His petition argues that despite having clear evidence of his innocence — including DNA reports disproving the police's claims — he was wrongfully incarcerated, causing irreparable damage to his social standing and mental health. The High Court is expected to take up the petition for detailed hearing in the coming days. The case raises critical questions about police accountability, misuse of power, and the mechanisms in place for compensating individuals who are wrongfully imprisoned due to flawed investigations. If admitted, this petition could set a significant precedent for wrongful arrest compensation cases in Karnataka and across India.

Sambhajinagar: 3 held for demanding Rs70L extortion from edu institute operator

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The Local Crime Branch (LCB) of the Jalna police arretsed three men accused of attempting to extort Rs70 lakh from a private educational institute operator. Police also seized valuables worth over Rs21 lakh in connection with the crime. The arrests followed a complaint filed on Wednesday by Ravi Pradeep Khomne (36), a resident of Gandhi Chaman in Jalna, who operates a private educational institution. Khomne lodged an FIR at the Chandan Zira police station, alleging that the accused threatened to shut down his institutes if he and other members of the institution did not pay them money. Taking swift action, superintendent of police Ajay Kumar Bansal directed the LCB to investigate the case and arrest the accused. A preliminary probe suggested that the accused had formed a group specifically targeting such institutions, and a manhunt is now underway for their remaining accomplices. Inspector Pankaj Jadhav of the LCB assembled a special team that tracked down and arrested the three on the same day. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ductless Air Conditioners Are Selling Like Crazy [See Why] Keep Cool Click Here Undo The accused have been identified as Karan Vilas Nikalje (25), Nilesh Rawsahab Nikalje (25), and Mayur Kundlik Nikam (21). "We have been told that these accused earlier extorted about Rs40 lakh," he said. Police are continuing efforts to trace the remaining accused and recover the full extortion amount.

Fourth child marriage stalled: Kamptee hotbed of underage marital unions

Nagpur: The women and child development department thwarted a child marriage involving a 16-year-old girl at Kamptee on Wednesday, marking the fourth such intervention in the area within two months. Kamptee has emerged as a troubling hotspot for underage marriages, prompting heightened vigilance and stricter enforcement of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006. This incident is the 14th child marriage stopped in Nagpur district this year, with eight cases reported in the city alone. Over the past two years, six FIRs have been filed against parents, relatives, and organisers for facilitating such unions. Acting on a tip-off, police inspector Mahesh Andhale of New Kamptee police station alerted district child protection officer (DCPO) Mustak Pathan. A swift response team, led by district women and child development officer Ranjit Kure, raided the wedding venue in collaboration with Kamptee police. The minor bride, adorned with turmeric and en route to the ceremony, was rescued before the illegal marriage with a 20-year-old youth could proceed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 3 to 5 BHK Premium Apartments starting at ₹3.22Cr+ Goodwill Wisteria Learn More Undo The authorities secured a written undertaking from those involved, and the girl, a school dropout, was presented before the Child Welfare Committee and admitted to a children's home for her safety. DCPO Mustak Pathan stressed the urgency of stricter oversight, urging marriage halls to verify the age of brides and grooms using Aadhaar cards or school leaving certificates. "Marriage halls failing to comply will face legal action," he warned. The surge in child marriage complaints in Kamptee has alarmed authorities, who attribute the issue to socio-economic challenges, lack of education, and entrenched societal stigmas, particularly in lower-income communities. "Girls are often seen as a burden, leading to early marriages," Pathan noted, highlighting the need for systemic change. To curb this trend, Andhale announced that notices will be issued to marriage halls, decorators, caterers, and officiants, mandating age verification through official documents. A meeting under Kamptee police station's jurisdiction will further reinforce these measures. Public awareness campaigns are also in the pipeline to educate communities and protect minor girls. The operation involved protection officers Sadhana Hatwar, Dipti Motghare, Rukmini Jangalwar, and NGO worker Vaishnavi Bawne. Pathan reiterated the legal consequences under the Child Marriage Act, which includes up to two years in prison, a fine of Rs1 lakh, or both. With 13 interventions this year, Nagpur district authorities remain steadfast in their commitment to eradicating child marriage. Citizens are urged to report suspicious activities to safeguard the rights and safety of minors, as Kamptee's proactive measures set a precedent for broader action.
