Nashik: Police detain man for running illegal gas refilling centre
Nashik: The Nashik city police have detained a person operating an illegal gas refill centre on the Wadala-DGP Road.
Authorities also seized property worth over Rs1 lakh, including 4 domestic Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders, an electronic gas refilling machine, a gas regulator, and a weighing machine.
The central crime branch, led by inspector Anchal Mudgal, busted the operation. The crackdown followed instructions from police commissioner Sandeep Karnik to investigate illegal businesses within the city.
On Tuesday, while patrolling the Mumbai Naka, Indiranagar, and Upnagar areas, assistant police inspector Pravin Mali received a tip-off about the illicit refilling station. Police immediately raided the tin shed facility, finding two individuals refilling LPG from a domestic cylinder into an autorickshaw.
Last month, the crime branch unit 2 had raided an illegal gas refill centre in the Nashik Road area and seized 63 domestic gas cylinders. Three people were detained, besides seizure of gas cylinders and machinery worth over Rs2.5 lakh. In April, the city police had detained two people and recovered 13 gas cylinders, three motors, and three weighing machines, all worth Rs1.2 lakh. The illegal gas refill centre was in Shramik Nagar area of Satpur.

A Mysuru man falsely accused of murdering his wife, who was later found alive, has approached the High Court seeking Rs 5 crore as compensation for wrongful imprisonment and loss of reputation. The petitioner, Suresh—a member of a tribal community—was arrested and jailed for 18 months after his wife Mallige went missing from Basavanahalli in Kushalnagar, under the jurisdiction of Madikeri Rural Police. Despite the trial court clearing him of all charges, Suresh argues that the court failed to formally recognize him as a 'victim' in its ruling. Following the acquittal, the trial court had directed the Home Department to pay Suresh Rs one lakh as compensation and asked the Bettadapura police to remove his name from the FIR. The court also recommended departmental inquiry against officers involved in the faulty investigation—Inspector B.G. Prakash, DYSP Jitendra Kumar, and Inspectors Prakash Yattimani and B.G. Mahesh—for tampering with records and fabricating evidence. In his High Court petition, Suresh contended that the Rs1 lakh compensation was insufficient. 'I have lost 1.5 years of my life behind bars for a crime I never committed. I suffered severe social stigma and loss of dignity. The government must pay Rs5 crore in damages and take action against the erring officers,' he said. Suresh has also sought that official records reflect his status as a victim rather than an accused. The High Court is expected to take up the case for hearing shortly. Sambhajinagar: 3 held for demanding Rs70L extortion from edu institute operator
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The Local Crime Branch (LCB) of the Jalna police arretsed three men accused of attempting to extort Rs70 lakh from a private educational institute operator. Police also seized valuables worth over Rs21 lakh in connection with the crime. The arrests followed a complaint filed on Wednesday by Ravi Pradeep Khomne (36), a resident of Gandhi Chaman in Jalna, who operates a private educational institution. Khomne lodged an FIR at the Chandan Zira police station, alleging that the accused threatened to shut down his institutes if he and other members of the institution did not pay them money. Taking swift action, superintendent of police Ajay Kumar Bansal directed the LCB to investigate the case and arrest the accused. A preliminary probe suggested that the accused had formed a group specifically targeting such institutions, and a manhunt is now underway for their remaining accomplices. "They have confessed to the crime. We have recovered Rs7.9 lakh, a car worth Rs10 lakh, a gaun-shaped lighter worth Rs1,200, gold jewellery worth Rs1 lakh and a camera worth Rs2 lakh," a police officer said. The total value of seized items stands at Rs 21,04,700. Police said that further investigation is underway to trace other individuals possibly involved in the crime. The accused have been handed over to Chandan Zira police station for further proceedings. Jadhav said there is an entire racket involved in blackmailing and extorting money by obtaining details under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. "We have been told that these accused earlier extorted about Rs40 lakh," he said. Police are continuing efforts to trace the remaining accused and recover the full extortion amount.

Fourth child marriage stalled: Kamptee hotbed of underage marital unions
Nagpur: The women and child development department thwarted a child marriage involving a 16-year-old girl at Kamptee on Wednesday, marking the fourth such intervention in the area within two months. Kamptee has emerged as a troubling hotspot for underage marriages, prompting heightened vigilance and stricter enforcement of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006. This incident is the 14th child marriage stopped in Nagpur district this year, with eight cases reported in the city alone.
