KRV protest against Hidkal dam water diversion

The Hindu30-05-2025

Members of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike ( Narayana Gowda ), held a protest in Belagavi on Friday, against the State government's decision to divert Ghataprabha river waters from Hidkal dam in Belagavi to the industrial area in Dharwad.
Bare chested activists and women carrying empty pots marched from Channamma circle to the Deputy Commissioner's office. Protesters, holding the red-yellow Kannada flag, raised slogans against the State government. They formed a human chain at the circle and stopped traffic for some time. They tried to forcefully enter the Deputy Commissioner's office by climbing over barricades. But the police stopped them. Later, protestors submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan.
They accused the State government of favouring rich industrialists over poor farmers. The State government has allowed industries to draw 45 million litres per day from the Hidkal dam. This is like sucking out our life blood, said Deepak Gudaganatti, district president who led the protest.
He demanded that the government withdraw the approval for water diversion immediately. He also warned that the State government and the district administration would be responsible if anything went wrong, as the issue was very sensitive. 'The state government should not play with fire,' he said.
'If the government wants to promote industries, let them do it in Belagavi district alone. It should not spend tax payers' money of ₹350 crore in laying pipelines for 125 km from Hidkal to Dharwad,' he said.
'Considering the haste and the manner in which the water diversion project is being implemented, we are suspicious of the motives behind it. Initially, the work of laying the pipeline commenced without any approval. Even the district in charge Minister and district administration officers were unaware of the project. It only came to light after farmers started opposing the pipeline work. It was stopped for some time after the district administration intervened. But the State government has started the work again, under pressure from vested interests. We suspect invisible forces behind this,' he said.
He threatened to intensify the protest if the work was not stopped immediately. He said that the water resources of Belagavi were being diverted for the welfare of twin cities of Hubballi and Dharwad. 'Already, they are taking water from the Malaprabha. Now, they want water from Ghataprabha also. This is unacceptable,' he said.
Leaders like Balu Jadagi, Ganesh Rokade, Suresh Gavannavar, Satish Gudadavar, Prakash Lamani, and Manjunath Rathod were present.

Let go of arrogance, speak Kannada, respect local community: Pai

New Delhi: Joining the ongoing language row, tech investor Mohandas Pai said professionals working in a state like Karnataka must learn the local language and use it, especially in public dealings. Terming the refusal of certain public-dealing officials to learn Kannada as 'arrogance', he said it causes unnecessary tensions, which are easily avoidable. The Kannada language issue in Bengaluru has become a flashpoint in recent months. With the rise of workers to Bengaluru from various states over the years, there have been growing concerns among locals about the perceived erosion of the language in public life. 'Bengaluru is the most welcoming place. The local population speaking Kannada is only 33 per cent. Lot of people have come, they've benefitted, they're doing very well... 'Now, we have small problems because the people who come from outside, many of them become arrogant and refuse to speak a few words of Kannada. Speak a few words of Kannada, show respect to the local community. We must show respect to any community,' Pai, Chairman of Aarin Capital, said in an interview to PTI. Pai said this approach applies everywhere. Whether one is moving to Bengal or Maharashtra, learning a few words of the local language would help outsiders connect with the community. Referring to the recent SBI dispute, wherein a bank manager reportedly refused to speak Kannada with a customer -- a stance that sparked public outrage, protests by pro-Kannada groups, and eventually an official apology from the bank -- Pai said the situation could have been avoided. 'What she could have done is, because she's in a service job, say, sir, I'm sorry, I can't speak the language, I'm learning. I'll ask my colleague to help me out and be respectful. That's all that is required. Nothing else,' he said. Pai stressed that customer service professionals, especially in rural areas, must prioritise the customer's language and cultural context: 'If you happen to be in a rural area, the customer cannot speak Hindi or English. You must speak the local language.'

Political slugfest heats up as BJP intensifies attack on Karnataka government over Bengaluru stampede

The Karnataka government on Friday removed chief minister Siddaramaiah's political secretary K Govindaraj and suspended a senior state intelligence officer amid a swirling political crisis over the mayhem during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) title celebrations, with opposition parties reiterating that the CM and his deputy DK Shivakumar take responsibility for the 11 deaths and step down. 'The appointment of K Govindaraj as Political Secretary to the Chief Minister is hereby revoked with immediate effect,' said a government notification issued on Friday, after a letter the member of legislative council (MLC) purportedly wrote about Wednesday's celebrations went viral. Although the government did not reveal the reasons for the move, officials suggested that the decision followed growing criticism of Govindaraj's involvement in the event. In the letter, addressed to government departments, Govindaraj had requested 'arrangements for a big celebration for the RCB team in Bengaluru on Tuesday.' 'Who am I to advise the chief minister?' he said. 'I would be the last person to advise anything on cricket, since I head the Karnataka Olympic Association.' The government also suspended additional director general of police (ADGP), intelligence, Hemant Nimbalkar, said in an order, a day after Siddaramaiah shunted out Bengaluru police chief B Dayananda and four other police officers. Senior IPS officer S Ravi, who was the home secretary, will replace Nimbalkar as the state intelligence chief. Meanwhile, Shivakumar accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of 'politicising dead bodies', as the opposition party in the state blamed the government for the mayhem. I'm the Bengaluru minister..... I had also gone to the stadium as the Bengaluru minister, what is wrong?''I had gone to the airport (to receive the RCB team). I requested them to cooperate as there was no permission for the victory procession. I gave them a Kannada flag and welcomed them. What's wrong? What crime have I committed?' he said. The BJP accused the Congress of punishing officers to shield political mismanagement. 'For the first time in the history of Karnataka, cold-blooded murderers are punishing top police officers,' the party's state unit wrote on X. Karnataka BJP president BY Vijayendra accused the Congress-led government of acting only under public and political pressure. 'Action has been taken against RCB and the Karnataka Cricket Association. The chief minister suddenly suspended senior police officers, including the Bengaluru city police commissioner, and five other officials to save himself,' Vijayendra said. The Janata Dal (Secular) blamed Shivakumar for the chaos and demanded his resignation. Leader of opposition R. Ashok also questioned the motives behind the suspensions, citing an internal power struggle in the ruling party. 'Is the ongoing cold war and covert fistfight between CM Siddaramaiah and DCM D.K. Shivakumar, the cause of this tragedy?' he asked. Reacting to allegations that former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy and the BJP have victimised police officers, Siddaramaiah said that the Opposition is doing politics. 'I will not do politics in this case. Action has been taken against those who have not acted responsibly on the surface,' he said.

Kamal Haasan Files Nomination For Rajya Sabha Seat From Tamil Nadu

Last Updated: Haasan signed and presented the papers to officials at the State Secretariat in Chennai in the presence of Chief Minister MK Stalin. Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) President and famed actor Kamal Haasan on Friday filed nomination papers to contest for the biennial polls to Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu which are scheduled for June 19. Haasan signed and presented the papers to officials at the State Secretariat in Chennai in the presence of Chief Minister MK Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, and senior leaders from his party. — Udhay (@Udhaystalin) June 6, 2025 This marks his formal entry into the upcoming upper house contest. Elections for six Rajya Sabha seats from Tamil Nadu are set to be held on June 19. Haasan was initially expected to file his papers earlier but deferred it, reportedly due to the backlash he faced for a controversial comment on the origins of Kannada. Kamal Haasan Controversy The actor landed in a big controversy recently. The South superstar attended the Thug Life audio launch event in Chennai, where he made a statement linking the origins of the Kannada language to Tamil. 'Actor Shivarajkumar is my family living in another state. That's why he is here. That's why when I started my speech, I said 'my life and my family is Tamil'. Your language (Kannada) was born out of Tamil. So you are included in that line," he said. The actor's remarks quickly went viral and triggered backlash from pro-Kannada groups in Karnataka. They not only demanded an apology from Haasan but also a ban on his upcoming movie. However, the actor refused to apologise, saying, 'If I am wrong, I will apologise. If I am not, then I won't." This led to the situation getting escalated as the Karnataka Film Chamber warned that his new film, 'Thug Life', will not see a release in the state unless he apologises for his remark. This prompted Haasan to move the High Court, seeking protection to release the film without disturbance. Taking a stern view, the Karnataka High Court, earlier this week rapped the actor and asked him the basis of his claims, saying that his 'one apology would have solved everything".
