Iran-Israel conflict disrupts orthodox tea exports; Assam industry faces major blow
Jorhat (Assam) [India], June 25 (ANI): The ongoing Iran-Israel conflict has severely disrupted India's Orthodox tea exports, particularly disrupting business from Assam, the country's largest producer of Orthodox tea.
Iran, a key buyer of Indian Orthodox tea imports nearly 28 million kilos annually, of which around 24 million kilos are sourced from Assam. With Assam producing roughly 85 million kilos of Orthodox tea each year, this disruption has jeopardised a significant portion of the state's exports.
Indian Orthodox tea refers to tea processed using the traditional method, which involves hand-plucking, withering, rolling, oxidation, and drying.
Exporters report major delays and complications in both shipments and payment settlements since the war began. These disruptions have triggered a steep fall in Orthodox tea prices at recent auctions, causing deep concern among tea growers and manufacturers, especially in Assam.
According to observers, what's raising eyebrows within the industry is that Sri Lanka -- another major supplier of Orthodox tea to Iran -- has not seen a similar sharp market decline.
Industry experts suggest this may be because Sri Lankan exporters are not exploiting the crisis, or the Sri Lankan government is actively stepping in to stabilise the sector.
While the current turmoil is expected to be temporary, the uncertainty is putting immense pressure on Orthodox tea producers. Stakeholders are hopeful that once the conflict subsides, exports will resume and payment channels will normalise. Until then, manufacturers -- particularly in Assam -- are left grappling with mounting losses and market instability.
Industry bodies are urging the central government to provide immediate relief and take policy-level steps to support the tea sector during this volatile period.
Talking to ANI, Prabhat Bezbaruah, former Chairman of the Tea Board and Toklai Tea Research Institute, said, 'Mainly, Orthodox tea exports have been hit because Iran is a large market for Orthodox teas -- about 28 million kilos of Indian Orthodox tea are exported to Iran.'
'There has been a disruption in shipments as well as in payments. As a result, the prices of Orthodox tea have dropped significantly in the last auction. This is quite surprising because Sri Lanka is also a major exporter of Orthodox tea to Iran, yet the Sri Lankan market has not reacted to the same extent,' he added.
He added that there has been a disruption in shipments and payments.
'As a result, the prices of Orthodox tea have dropped significantly in the last auction. This is quite surprising because Sri Lanka is also a major exporter of Orthodox tea to Iran, yet the Sri Lankan market has not reacted to the same extent,' he added.
Bezbaruah further added, 'It appears that exporters in India -- who buy tea from tea gardens and tea companies -- are, to some extent, taking advantage of the situation. In contrast, in Sri Lanka, either exporters are not exploiting the situation or the government is intervening to support the exporters and maintain trade continuity.'
He expressed his optimism, stating that the present conditions seem to be a temporary issue.
'As soon as the war ends, exports are expected to resume and payments should be regularised. However, at present, we are facing significant difficulties in exporting tea to Iran,' he added. (ANI)

Cabinet clears Rs 3,626 crore Pune Metro phase-2 to boost east-west connectivity
New Delhi [India], June 25 (ANI): The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, clearing two elevated corridors--Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi--as extensions of the existing Vanaz-Ramwadi line, aimed at boosting East-West connectivity and linking key suburbs, IT hubs, and transport nodes across the city, as per the Cabinet's statement. The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Pune Metro Rail Project Phase-2: Vanaz to Chandani Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi (Corridor 2B), as extensions of the existing Vanaz-Ramwadi corridor under Phase-1. These two elevated corridors will span 12.75 km and include 13 stations, connecting fast-developing suburbs such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi. The project is scheduled for completion within four years, the statement read. The estimated project cost is Rs 3626.24 crore, to be equally shared by the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, and external bilateral/multilateral agencies. This strategic proposal is a logical extension of the existing Corridor-2 and aligns with the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), which envisions a continuous Chandani Chowk to Wagholi Metro corridor to strengthen East-West mass transit in Pune. According to the statement, these extensions will serve key IT hubs, commercial areas, educational institutions, and residential pockets, increasing the share of public transport and ridership across the network. The new corridors will also integrate at the District Court Interchange Station with Line-1 (Nigdi-Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjewadi-District Court) to enable seamless multimodal urban travel. Under long-term mobility planning, intercity bus services from cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru will be integrated at Chandani Chowk, while those from Ahilya Nagar and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar will connect at Wagholi, allowing passengers to easily access Pune's Metro system. These extensions will also help decongest arterial routes such as Paud Road and Nagar Road, offering safe, fast, and eco-friendly mobility options, it further read. After completion of these corridors, the projected incremental daily ridership for the entire Line 2 is estimated at 0.96 lakh in 2027, 2.01 lakh in 2037, 2.87 lakh in 2047, and 3.49 lakh in 2057. The project will be implemented by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro), which will execute all civil, electro-mechanical, and related works. Pre-construction activities such as topographical survey and detailed design consultancy have already commenced. This strategic expansion is poised to unlock Pune's economic potential, enhance its urban transport infrastructure, and contribute significantly to sustainable and inclusive development across the metropolitan region, the statement added. Delhi HC approves 65.9 crore transfer from Indian accounts of ex-Canadian official in fraud case
New Delhi [India], June 25 (ANI): The Delhi High Court has recently permitted the Canada government to recover Rs 65.9 crore from the Indian bank accounts of Sanjay Madan, an Indian-origin former Canadian bureaucrat and his associates, in connection with a multi-crore embezzlement case currently under trial in the north American country. Delhi High Court's Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora passed the order on June 23, instructing IndusInd Bank and RBL Bank to complete the Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures before transferring the funds. The court also froze all transactions from Madan's Indian accounts, with limited exceptions -- including the permitted remittance and payment of legal fees backed by valid documentation. Appearing via video conferencing, Sanjay Madan agreed to the fund transfer. His counsel informed the court that Madan's accounts held Rs 38 crore in IndusInd Bank and 29 crore in RBL Bank, and that Madan did not object to the remittance. The action stems from a Rs 290 crore fraud case involving Madan, a former IT director in Ontario's Ministry of Education. He allegedly orchestrated a 47.4 million Canadian Dollar (CAD) fraud between 2011 and 2020, using shell companies and exploiting COVID-19 relief programs. Sentenced to 10 years in prison in April 2023 after pleading guilty, Madan returned CAD 30 million as part of a plea deal and agreed to repay the rest over 15 years. Failure to comply could extend his sentence by another six years. The Canadian government filed the recovery suit under Section 84 of the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908, which allows foreign states to pursue legal action in India with official consent. The court also directed several Indian banks--including YES Bank, Kotak Mahindra, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, IDBI Bank, and Punjab National Bank--to file affidavits detailing account holdings. Sanjay and another accused Vidhan Madan were ordered to disclose all their assets in India. (ANI)
