Cabinet clears Rs 3,626 crore Pune Metro phase-2 to boost east-west connectivity
New Delhi [India], June 25 (ANI): The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, clearing two elevated corridors--Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi--as extensions of the existing Vanaz-Ramwadi line, aimed at boosting East-West connectivity and linking key suburbs, IT hubs, and transport nodes across the city, as per the Cabinet's statement.
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Pune Metro Rail Project Phase-2: Vanaz to Chandani Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi (Corridor 2B), as extensions of the existing Vanaz-Ramwadi corridor under Phase-1. These two elevated corridors will span 12.75 km and include 13 stations, connecting fast-developing suburbs such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi. The project is scheduled for completion within four years, the statement read.
The estimated project cost is Rs 3626.24 crore, to be equally shared by the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, and external bilateral/multilateral agencies. This strategic proposal is a logical extension of the existing Corridor-2 and aligns with the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), which envisions a continuous Chandani Chowk to Wagholi Metro corridor to strengthen East-West mass transit in Pune.
According to the statement, these extensions will serve key IT hubs, commercial areas, educational institutions, and residential pockets, increasing the share of public transport and ridership across the network. The new corridors will also integrate at the District Court Interchange Station with Line-1 (Nigdi-Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjewadi-District Court) to enable seamless multimodal urban travel.
Under long-term mobility planning, intercity bus services from cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru will be integrated at Chandani Chowk, while those from Ahilya Nagar and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar will connect at Wagholi, allowing passengers to easily access Pune's Metro system. These extensions will also help decongest arterial routes such as Paud Road and Nagar Road, offering safe, fast, and eco-friendly mobility options, it further read.
After completion of these corridors, the projected incremental daily ridership for the entire Line 2 is estimated at 0.96 lakh in 2027, 2.01 lakh in 2037, 2.87 lakh in 2047, and 3.49 lakh in 2057. The project will be implemented by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro), which will execute all civil, electro-mechanical, and related works. Pre-construction activities such as topographical survey and detailed design consultancy have already commenced.
This strategic expansion is poised to unlock Pune's economic potential, enhance its urban transport infrastructure, and contribute significantly to sustainable and inclusive development across the metropolitan region, the statement added. (ANI)

Noida: The power department has begun disconnecting electricity supply to thousands of consumers in Division 4 after identifying over 70,000 defaulters with unpaid dues amounting to Rs 80.5 crore. Dharashiv inspector & constable caught taking Rs 95,000 bribe from another police constable
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Inspector Maroti Shelke and constable Mukta Lokhande, of the Dharashiv rural police station, were arrested by the anti-corruption bureau on charges of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 95,000 from another woman constable to assist her son in an abetment to suicide case filed against him. Superintendent of police (ACB) Sandip Atole said the complainant, a 48-year-old woman, approached ACB officers alleging that Shelke and Lokhande demanded Rs 1 lakh as a bribe. "Lokhande allegedly made the demand on behalf of inspector Shelke as well as for herself to help the complainant's son," Atole said. Following the complaint, the ACB verified the allegations on Wednesday. During the verification at Dharashiv rural police station, Shelke directed the complainant to meet Lokhande. Later, at the govt guest house in Dharashiv, Lokhande accepted Rs 95,000 as the final bribe amount. A trap was then laid under the supervision of ACB deputy SP Yogesh Velapure. Around the planned time, Lokhande was caught red-handed accepting the Rs 95,000 bribe from the complainant in front of panch witnesses. She was immediately taken into custody. Inspector Shelke was arrested subsequently. Bhushan Power deal rejection: JSW Steel files review petition in Supreme Court
JSW Steel has filed a review petition in the Supreme Court challenging its May 2 ruling that rejected the company's Rs 19,700-crore resolution plan for Bhushan Power and Steel Ltd (BPSL) and directed liquidation of the debt-ridden firm. In a filing to the stock exchanges on Wednesday, JSW Steel confirmed that it had submitted the petition on June 25. The move comes nearly two months after the apex court overturned the company's acquisition of BPSL, which had been completed in 2020 under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) framework. Some of the lenders to BPSL have also filed separate review petitions. The court's decision has raised concerns over the finality of resolution processes under the IBC and the fate of already-implemented plans. The May 2 ruling not only nullified JSW Steel's resolution plan for BPSL but also ordered the company's liquidation, despite the transaction having been executed and the steelmaker taking operational control. While ordering the liquidation, the biggest in the corporate history, a bench of Justice Bela Trivedi and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma lambasted the delay on the part of JSW Steel to implement the resolution plan and said the Committee of Creditors (CoC) failed to exercise its commercial wisdom while approving the Resolution Plan. SC had said JSW even after the approval of its plan by the NCLAT, wilfully contravened and not complied with the terms of the said approved Resolution Plan for a period of about two years, which had frustrated the very object and purpose of the IBC, and consequently had vitiated the CIR proceedings of the corporate debtor-BPSL. 'In the instant case, JSW did not implement the Resolution Plan for about two years since its approval by the NCLAT, though there was no legal impediment in implementing the same. Such flagrant violation of the terms of the Resolution Plan, has frustrated the very object and purpose of the Code,' the Supreme Court had said. After obtaining the approval of its Resolution Plan from CoC by presenting a rosy picture, misguiding the CoC, and defeating the rights of other resolution applicants, JSW did not respect and honour the said commitments, the SC said. On the contrary, it tried its level best to delay the implementation of the Resolution Plan without any cogent reason or justification, the order said.
