Incredible reason Man Utd gave mega-money deal to 'body language consultant'
Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was behind the decision to hire a body language consultant, who worked with players to improve their effectiveness at penalties
Manchester United signed off on the hiring a body language consultant paid £175k-a-year... simply to keep Erik ten Hag happy. Dutch coach Ten Hag was sacked as United manager in October, bringing to an end his two and a half years in charge as Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS team opted to hire Ruben Amorim as his replacement.
Ten Hag arrived at United on the back of three Eredivisie titles with Ajax and won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup while at Old Trafford. He won 70 of his 128 matches in charge altogether but was sacked after a defeat by West Ham left United 14th in the Premier League.
Ratcliffe had toyed with dismissing Ten Hag last summer, but the FA Cup final win over Manchester City bought him more time. He was even handed a new contract – a decision which ended up costing the club around £14million in compensation to Ten Hag and his coaching staff.
United have been on a cost-cutting mission since Ratcliffe took over control of sporting operations in February 2024, with the petrochemicals billionaire slashing hundreds of jobs, including the ambassadorial role for legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Ratcliffe has made it clear that he believes he inherited an inefficient club which has been wasting money across the board.
Ratcliffe was dismayed to see that the club were forking out £175,000 per year to pay a body language consultant, who, according to The Athletic, was working with the players on penalties.
Ten Hag was behind the decision because he wanted his players to better recognise facial expressions and other signs that can help in high-pressure shoot-outs.
The report states that United's executives had green lighted the expenditure largely just to appease Ten Hag. But that outlook was changed by Ratcliffe, who saw it as an unnecessary expense.
United did win two penalty shoot-outs during the time period in which they were working with the expert. They saw off Brighton and Coventry in the semi-finals of the FA Cup in 2023 and 2024 respectively, with Ten Hag praising his side's coolness after they saw off the Sky Blues on their way to winning the trophy last year.
"It was about mentality in that moment,' he said at Wembley. 'You have a plan and have full confidence so I told them to stick to the plan. I had confidence we would win the shootout. Normally Casemiro scores, we train them very well.
"I am always calm, I focus and know my players can shoot penalties. I'm always confident Andre [Onana] will catch minimum one. I was quite convinced but when the first is a mis-hit then you never know."

Arsenal transfer news LIVE: Barcelona in Partey talks EXCLUSIVE, ‘green light' for Gyokeres deal, Sesko latest
Arteta on Guard of Honour Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says Liverpool 'deserve' their Guard of Honour. Arne Slot's champions were BOOED by Chelsea fans as they walked through the tribute of Enzo Maresca's team last weekend. Arteta doubled down on his assertion that Arsenal were 'the best team' in the Champions League and should have now been preparing for a Munich Final against Inter Milan. But the Spaniard, who admitted his side had taken a 'step backwards' this term, promised his team would show Anfield a display of dignity and use it as 'motivation' for next term. Liverpool deserve that. They've been the best team, they've been the most consistent. What Arne Slot and the coaching staff have done has been fascinating, it's been really good and they fully deserve it. And that's the sport, when somebody is better you have to applaud and accept and try to reach that level. Something that has to drive you, motivate you, and pain probably is a good one to use. When you don't really want to do something but it's the right thing to do, usually it is a motivation for next season. Mikel Arteta

Pep Guardiola confirms two Man City transfer decisions before Club World Cup
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has spoken about the club's squad planning ahead of next season amid speculation over stars about to enter the final year of their contracts Pep Guardiola has confirmed Manchester City goalkeepers Ederson and Stefan Ortega will remain with the club next season. The Catalan coach revealed the Premier League side appear unlikely to dip into the market to improve their options in net. Ederson and Ortega have shared the net at the Etihad Stadium for a number of years, with the former taking the no.1 slot for Guardiola's side. The duo are both set to enter the final year of their contracts however, increasing speculation that a change could soon be on the cards in goal at City. City have little time for rest before they are called upon for Club World Cup duty. Their first match takes place against Wydad AC on June 18. There is an opportunity to move for new players, with a transfer window open until June 10 but Guardiola appears content with his options for the moment. Though goalkeeper was an area of discussion with the club's hierarchy. "We have spoken about the situation regarding squad planning and the two goalkeepers we have will continue," Guardiola told reporters at a golf event in Catalonia on Monday. That did not prevent the ex-Bayern Munich boss being taken to task over Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia. The shotstopper saw an approach by Arsenal last summer, while Barcelona appear to be in pole position for his signature this year, despite reported interest from the Gunners and City. "Joan Garcia is a really good goalkeeper, but City are linked with 500 players in every transfer window," Guardiola said. "He's an Espanyol player and I don't know what happen, but I'm told by the Espanyol guys [playing in the golf event] he's an extraordinary goalkeeper. The references we have are very good." City are already intending on leaving at least two bodies at home for their Club World Cup adventure in the United States. Midfield star Mateo Kovacic is to undergo surgery after nursing a heel injury. The Croatian will miss the tournament and be unavailable until the start of next season. Guardiola had hinted that the club were trying to manage the player's injury when he left him out of the FA Cup final squad as a precaution. The Manchester club are also said to have opted against including James McAtee in their squad. The 22-year-old will instead join up with England's pre-tournament training squad ahead of the under-21s Euros in Slovakia.

Injury blow for Manchester City midfielder Mateo Kovacic ahead of Club World Cup
Kovacic missed the FA Cup final defeat to Crystal Palace through injury earlier this month. He returned to face Bournemouth in the Premier League but was sent off and sat out the final game of the season at Fulham. City have now confirmed the 31-year-old has required an operation. No timescale has been put on his recovery but the focus is now on next season. A club statement read: 'The Croatian midfielder is now set to miss the FIFA Club World Cup as City head to the USA in June. 'Mateo will spend the summer rehabilitating from the operation and everyone at the club wishes him a speedy recovery.' City face Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in their first match of the Club World Cup in Philadelphia on June 18. They have further group games against Al Ain of Abu Dhabi and Juventus. The 32-team tournament concludes on July 13.
