Malaysia and New Zealand boost disaster management cooperation
Ahmad Zahid, who chairs Malaysia's Central Disaster Management Committee, emphasised that the visit was more than symbolic.
It aimed to expand strategic cooperation in areas such as information sharing, education, and disaster safety training, including rescue simulations and logistics management for victims.
'Malaysia and New Zealand have long enjoyed cooperation in various fields, but disaster management remains an area with great potential to be enhanced bilaterally,' he told reporters.
Progress is underway in negotiations between Malaysia's National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) and New Zealand's National Emergency Management Agency to finalise a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
Ahmad Zahid expressed confidence that this agreement would strengthen regional preparedness and public safety.
'I am confident this effort will serve as a landmark for more coordinated, structured and effective cooperation between the two countries, for the safety of the people and stronger regional preparedness,' he said.
The Deputy Prime Minister's delegation included senior Malaysian officials. His five-day working visit concludes on Friday (July 18) with his return to Kuala Lumpur. - Bernama

He will also receive an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Social Business from UKM. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate will engage with the Yunus Social Business Centre community. Malaysia-Bangladesh trade grew by 5.1 percent to RM13.35 billion in 2024. Bangladesh is Malaysia's second-largest trading partner in South Asia. Key Malaysian exports include petroleum products, palm oil, and chemicals. Imports from Bangladesh consist of textiles, footwear, and manufactured goods. KUALA LUMPUR: Several high-profile investigations by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) remain ongoing, says Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. Responding to queries from Tuan Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas) and Lim Lip Eng (PH-Kepong) in the Dewan Rakyat, she addressed the status of investigations involving two Home Ministry officers, one individual, former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, and the late former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin. Azalina confirmed that the investigation into the Home Ministry officials arrested on May 8 over allegations of corruption related to expedited citizenship confirmations is still underway. "The MACC is bound by subsection 29(4) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, which restricts the disclosure of investigation details," she said on Tuesday (Aug 12). She added that one high-profile case involving a politician is under judicial consideration, making it inappropriate for discussion in Parliament as per the Standing Order. "The MACC is similarly restricted from disclosing any details related to ongoing investigations, under the MACC Act 2009," she added.
