MBB miss out on Pretoria playoffs after BAL conference elimination
Johannesburg's Made by Ball's (MBB) dream of reaching the Basketball Africa League playoffs in their debut season was torpedoed when they were beaten 102-73 by Al Alhy Tripoli in their last Nile Conference game at the BK Arena in Kigali on Sunday.
This means SA will not have a representative when the playoffs take place at the Sunbet Arena in Pretoria in two weeks.
MBB had to beat conference leaders Al Ahly if they were to qualify to play on home soil as per the standings.
They needed to finish second or at least third for the last wild card spot.
That spot falls to FUS Rabat of Morocco, who, like MBB, won two games but have a better points difference of -19 compared with the Johannesburg side's -64.
US import Teafale Lenard Jr put in another impressive shift on top of his 39 points which he had scored the previous day.
The ex-NBA G League player put up 18 points, 11 rebounds and two assists, but his efforts were not enough to carry the team over the line.
Jovan Mooring with 10 points and Pieter Prinsloo (11) were the only other players to score double figures.
The bench contributed 27 points. By contrast, the men from Libya had 49 points.
The 2.13m tall David Craig, who missed the Nairobi City Thunder game on Saturday with a stomach bug, returned to the starting five and was the only change head coach Sam Vincent made.
Tripoli quickly opened up a four-point gap from the tip-off, but Lenard levelled matters.
With that kind of clinical display from the perimeter, there is no question why Jaylen Adams walks away with the @visitrwanda_now MVP accolade 👏. #BAL5 pic.twitter.com/UHYCI3clQ7

From then, MBB found their mojo and put up a seven-point extension into the score line and were 14-7 with four minutes remaining, but the Libyan outfit made a comeback and tied the game 16-16 with two minutes left.
Though MBB were resilient, Al Ahly ended up winning the quarter 23-16.
MBB kept on chipping important buckets in the second quarter, but whenever they moved closer to Tripoli's score, Italian head coach Abou Chacra's men would step on the accelerator.
The closest difference MBB moved to was a three-point deficit at 30-27 with four minutes before halftime.
Al Ahly, who had already secured a place in the playoffs, went to the dressing room team talk ahead at 42-34.
The Libyans ensured that the writing was on the wall for the South Africans and diminished any thoughts of a miracle comeback.
They walked away with the game in the third quarter.
Jean Jacques Boissy, who was arguably the best player in the conference, slotted a three-point step back jump shot five minutes into the quarter, and Al Ahly took a lead of 22 points.
Tripoli had a 69-48 advantage heading into the last 10 minutes of the game.
Despite Lenard, Prinsloo and Mooring putting shots at the end, it was not enough to stop the Libyans as they walked away with a 29-point win.
US player Jaylen Adams, who played 32:43 for Tripoli, finished with a top score of 28 points.

Orlando Pirates: Who will replace José Riveiro in the hot seat?
Orlando Pirates find themselves at a critical juncture following the departure of head coach José Riveiro to Egyptian giants Al Ahly. Under Riveiro, the Buccaneers reclaimed silverware and re-established their competitive edge. Now, with the top job vacant, the club must identify a new leader capable of elevating the team from cup success to consistent league triumphs. The next appointment isn't just about tactics, it's about vision, identity, and ambition. Here's a look at the top contenders linked to one of South African football's most high-pressure positions, as per iDiski Times . Rulani Mokwena, recently departed from Moroccan giants Wydad AC, brings both local experience and international perspective. He previously led the Buccaneers in an interim capacity, and his time with Mamelodi Sundowns saw him mature into a top-level tactician. Having tasted success across the continent, Mokwena could be poised for a high-profile return, though expectations will be far higher than during his first stint. Pablo Franco Martin blends analytical insight with international coaching experience. Best known locally for his time at AmaZulu, he recently left Saudi side Al-Faisaly and has managed in Spain's top flight with Getafe. His progressive style may suit Pirates' desire to dominate possession and control games with finesse. Pablo Machín made headlines in Spain for guiding Girona to their first-ever LaLiga promotion. His journey through elite clubs like Sevilla and Espanyol speaks volumes, but adapting to the intensity and unpredictability of Orlando Pirates is a different challenge altogether. His tactical rigidity might either provide much-needed structure, or clash with the PSL's expressive nature. Former Raja Casablanca manager Ricardo Sá Pinto brings a fiery touchline presence and a high-tempo style of football. With coaching stints across Europe, Asia, and Africa, he has lifted trophies at clubs such as Standard Liège, Esteghlal, and APOEL. Sá Pinto's charisma and intensity might ignite a spark at Pirates, but could his volatility prove a risk? Abdeslam Ouaddou may not be the loudest name on the list, but his recent success at Marumo Gallants speaks volumes. He stabilised the struggling side and earned praise for quickly turning things around. A former Moroccan international with European experience, Ouaddou could be a surprise choice, yet one with genuine upside. When you think of African coaching excellence, Pitso Mosimane inevitably comes to mind. With three CAF Champions League titles and historic success at Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns, he remains one of the most decorated coaches on the continent. However, with his current focus on Middle Eastern projects and youth development through his football schools, a return to the PSL, and specifically Pirates, appears improbable. Already part of the technical staff, Mandla Ncikazi understands the club's ethos and squad dynamics better than most. He briefly co-led the side during a transitional period and remains a respected figure within the setup. While he offers continuity and cohesion, questions linger about whether he has the stature and tactical sharpness to lead a title charge. Monnapule Saleng targeted by Al Ahly confirmation: Orlando Pirates star drew transfer interest
NOTABLE ABSENTEE Over six months since he last played for the Soweto Giants, it's finally been confirmed that Al Ahly were in fact interested in signing out-of-favour Orlando Pirates forward Monnapule Saleng. Picture: Phill Magakoe / AFP Over six months later, it's finally been confirmed that Al Ahly did in fact want to sign out-of-favour Orlando Pirates player Monnapule Saleng. Saleng has not featured for Pirates since December 7, when they hosted Al Ahly in a CAF Champions League match at Orlando Stadium, which ended in a goalless draw. His absence was believed to be over a salary dispute and a failed transfer to Al Ahly, although this was never confirmed by Pirates. As one of the best wingers in the country and not known to be nursing any kind of injury, his absence was keenly felt by Pirates supporters this past season. Saleng, however, was selected for Bafana Bafana in their African Nations Championship (Chan) qualifier in Bloemfontein in early March and, by all accounts, delivered a top performance.

Pyramids survive tense finish to be crowned African champions
CAIRO - Pyramids of Egypt survived late pressure to beat Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa 2-1 in Cairo on Sunday and win the CAF Champions League for the first time. Competing in the premier African club competition for only the second time, Pyramids triumphed 3-2 on aggregate after the first leg was drawn 1-1 in Pretoria last weekend. Fiston Mayele scored after 23 minutes and Ahmed Samy on 56 minutes for the Egyptian outfit before Iqraam Rayners reduced the arrears in the 75th minute. Sundowns pressed in the closing stages, but the second goal that would have given them overall victory on away goals proved elusive. Pleas by Pyramids, who normally attract crowds of just a few thousand, for support led to their 30,000-seat stadium being about half full for the second leg. Both clubs made one change to the first-leg starting line-ups last weekend in Pretoria, where Walid el Karti headed an added-time equaliser after Lucas Ribeiro gave Sundowns an early second half lead. Pyramids coach Krunoslav Jurcic, a former Croatia midfielder, dropped forward Ibrahim Adel, scorer of six goals en route to the final, and promoted ex-English Premier League forward Ramadan Sobhi. Sundowns' Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso left out Brazilian forward Arthur Sales and gave a starting place to midfielder Jayden Adams. Cardoso is only the second coach after Argentine Oscar Fullone to reach consecutive Champions League finals with different clubs. Cardoso took Esperance of Tunisia to the 2024 final, which they lost to Al Ahly of Egypt with an own goal separating the sides. On a warm, windy first day, both teams constantly surrendered possession cheaply before Pyramids took the lead when Mayele scored his ninth goal of the African campaign. A cross by Ahmed Atef was partially cleared by Grant Kekana and Mayele pounced to slam a snap low shot across goalkeeper Ronwen Williams into the far corner of the net. Tensions rose and the Somali referee yellow-carded Atef and Aubrey Modiba after the duo had an angry clash, leading with their heads. Sundowns squandered a great chance in first half added time when Tashreeq Matthews broke through only to see his shot parried by the left leg of goalkeeper Ahmed el Shenawy. It was the only time the Pretoria outfit threatened in the opening half despite having much more possession. Pyramids struck again when Mohamed Chibi placed a free kick into the goalmouth and central defender Samy headed powerfully into the net. It was the first goal for Samy in the 16-match Champions League campaign and he became the 19th Pyramids player to score in the competition this season.
