Railway blames passenger for berth fall, injury on Chennai-Palakkad express

India Today13-05-2025

The Railways has released a clarification regarding a berth collapse on a train that injured a woman passenger. The woman is reported to have suffered a head injury when the middle berth of a sleeper coach gave way while she was travelling on the Dr MGR Chennai Central-Palakkad Express. The incident took place on May 12, shortly after the train passed Jolarpettai station in Tamil Nadu, while the passenger was asleep in the lower berth. At the time of the mishap, the middle berth was unoccupied.advertisementIn a press release issued on the same day, the Southern Railway stated: 'The unfortunate incident appears to have occurred due to improper handling of the chain link hook by the passenger,' suggesting that the locking mechanism may not have been secured properly.
Southern Railway officials confirmed that the passenger declined medical attention when the train was near Morappur, the nearest station, and instead deboarded later at Salem station. The station master at Salem arranged for an ambulance, and she was rushed to the Government Hospital in Salem at around 3.05 am. According to officials, the woman has since been discharged after receiving treatment.A team of railway officials inspected the coach and found that the chain and hook used to hold the middle berth in place were working properly and met safety standards. The berth would only unlock if lifted more than 2.5 centimetres, which is normal. The coach had already gone through a full check-up in March 2025 and did not need any more repairs. Before the train left Chennai on May 12, it was also checked again and declared fit for travel.advertisementThe Railways reiterated that all coach maintenance protocols had been followed, and placed the onus of the accident on user error. 'Passenger safety is a shared responsibility,' the press note added, urging passengers to properly secure middle berths using the designated chain link hook to prevent such incidents.Southern Railway's Chief Public Relations Officer M Senthamil Selvan concluded the statement with an appeal: 'Passengers are kindly requested to ensure that the middle berth is properly secured using the chain link hook after use. Improper handling or failure to lock the berth correctly may pose safety risks to fellow passengers.'

New temple impact: Digha Rath train WL crosses 100

Kolkata: While Rath Yatra, scheduled on June 27, is still three weeks away, bus and train bookings to Digha, where the occasion will be celebrated for the first time at the Jagannatham Dham complex, are almost full. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The popular Tamralipta Express has a waitlist of over 100. The waitlist begins as early as June 24, with the non-AC bogies seeing a waitlist of 91 and the AC chair car at 20. On June 27, the waitlist stands at 117 and 67, respectively. The chair car tickets for Kandari Express, which leaves Howrah in the afternoon and reaches Digha in the evening, are waitlisted at 15 and 19 on June 26 and 27. Railway officials advise passengers to keep checking for tickets as cancellations might open up seats. "We're monitoring the situation closely and will take necessary steps to accommodate the rush," said a senior Railways official. "I've been trying to book tickets on Tamralipta Express for three days now. Everything seems full," said Shankha Banerjee, a Bhowanipore resident who plans to attend the Rath Yatra at the new temple with his family. "We might have to drive down now, though we are worried about parking and traffic arrangements." For many, this is a unique opportunity. "Witnessing the first Rath Yatra at Digha's new temple complex is special. That's why we booked tickets a month in advance," said Ashok Dutta, a retired government employee from Jadavpur. The pre-bookings have started even on buses to Digha, a rare development given such rush is witnessed only on the Kolkata-Siliguri route but rarely for Digha. There are eight operators, including government ones run by NBSTC and WBTC, and there are queries on apps and even the Esplanade and Howrah terminuses. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Though actual bookings are not as high as trains, queries for reaching Digha on the morning of Rath Yatra and leaving in the evening are coming. We are telling them that we will firm up the plans once the traffic measures are announced as chief minister Mamata Banerjee will be present in Digha on that day," said a private operator that runs four daily services to Digha, including a night service. The state transport department is planning to deploy additional buses. "We are looking at running extra buses from Kolkata to Digha on June 26 and 27 based on the demand," said a WBTC official. "We've never seen such advance bookings for Digha," said Santosh Dutta, who operates bus services. "Usually, people book 2-3 days in advance. But this time, we're getting calls weeks ahead."

Now Katra to Srinagar in just 3 hrs. PM Modi flags off Vande Bharat linking Kashmir to rest of India

The new service will not only connect Jammu to Kashmir via a rail link but also Kashmir to the rest of India for the first time. While road and air connectivity already existed, the rail link is significant due to the region's challenging geography and tough terrain. The rail route, which is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), will be open for commercial services starting Saturday. Katra, Jammu: With chants of 'Jai Shera Wali Da' and 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai', Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first Vande Bharat Express connecting Jammu to Kashmir Friday. The new railway line is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the Jammu region and Srinagar. The fare for the Katra-Srinagar route is Rs 715 for chair car and Rs 1,350 for executive class. 'This is not just a new railway service but also symbolic of how far the region's railway network has progressed over the last 11 years,' said Railway spokesperson Dilip Kumar. 'We are witnessing history in the making. This railway line is a marvel, and advanced technology has been used to ensure all-weather connectivity,' he added. The inauguration comes weeks after the 22 April Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people were killed. Since then, tourism in Kashmir has seen a massive decline. The rail link is being seen as a step towards restoring normalcy and inviting tourists to revisit the Valley. 'Earlier, there would be no space to walk at Dal Lake because of the massive tourist footfall. Now, we hardly see a few. Hope this railway line will restore normalcy,' said a shawl seller in Srinagar. By road, the journey used to take around 6-7 hours. For the first time, two Vande Bharat trains will run consecutively—one from Katra and the other from Srinagar—both flagged off by the prime minister. The prime minister also inaugurated two major engineering landmarks. One is the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge, standing 359 metres above the riverbed, 35 metres taller than the Eiffel Tower. It spans 1,315 metres and is part of the USBRL. It is engineered to withstand seismic and wind conditions. Located about 80 km from Jammu, it spans the Anji River and has been constructed by Hindustan Construction Company. The USBRL will cross a stretch of 271 km that includes 36 tunnels and 943 bridges. It has been built at a cost of Rs 43,780 crore. Before the final launch, several trial runs were conducted. In the last run, army and security personnel boarded the train as it passed over the Chenab Bridge to assess wind resistance and safety protocols. According to officials, the bridge is designed to withstand wind speeds of up to 260 km/h.
