100 Years of How Black Painters See Themselves

At the Bozar Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels, the Cameroonian-born curator Koyo Kouoh — who will oversee the main exhibition at the 2026 Venice Biennale — has filled the vast Art Nouveau galleries with works by artists from Africa and the African diaspora. More than 150 paintings by around 120 artists, most seen in Brussels for the first time, show people and scenes of Black life across the globe.
Kouoh's show, 'When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting,' which runs through Aug. 10, originated at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa museum in Cape Town, which Kouoh has helmed since 2019. The show demonstrates the sophisticated breadth of her curatorial approach, which is both aesthetic and art historical, painterly and political.
In the exhibition catalog, Kouoh notes that there has been an explosion of exhibitions exploring Black culture since the 2020 police murder of George Floyd and the subsequent Black Lives Matter protests, with a particular interest in how Black artists represent themselves both as individuals and as members of communities.
Her contribution, 'When We See Us,' adapts its title from Ava DuVernay's 2019 Netflix mini-series about the Central Park Five, a group of Black and Latino teenagers who were wrongfully accused of rape and assault. But where DuVernay's story of violence and brutality had 'They' — 'When They See Us' — Kouoh has 'We,' pointing to the importance of Black self-expression, or the ability to tell one's own story. The art on show here does not only exist in relation to oppression or otherness, but also on its own expansive, frequently gorgeous, terms.
The display at Bozar groups paintings according to six loose themes — 'The Everyday,' 'Repose,' 'Triumph and Emancipation,' 'Sensuality,' 'Spirituality' and 'Joy and Revelry' — mixing old and new. (The birth years of the artists range from 1886 to 1999.) Although each painter can be associated with a particular nation, artistic movement or era, Kouoh's aim is to tease out the hidden connections. We begin to see a wider web that connects these artists across time and space, regardless of borders and boundaries.
In the first section, 'The Everyday,' you might notice different attitudes toward realism: from the West Chester, Pa.-born painter Horace Pippin's 'Victory Garden' (1943), striking for its brightly blooming flowers, to the South African George Pemba's portrait of a nurse at work, 'At the Clinic' (1979), to the Botswanan Meleko Mokgosi's immense triptych of enigmatic domestic scenes, 'Pax Kaffraria: Graase-Mans' (2014).
But not every painting is straightforward in style. In the 'Repose' section, figures are more at ease, sitters are engaged in conversation, lost in thought or looking away from the viewer. The styles here vary, with figures sometimes painted loosely, abstracted, or collaged, as if to say that, in repose, we are permitted some leave of our bodily selves.
I loved the pairing in this section of two radically different paintings that upended the traditional Western 'odalisque,' or eroticized reclining nude: the Kenyan painter Wangari Mathenge's 'Sundials and Sonnets' (2019), a large, realist portrait of a woman in a blue bathing suit who fixes us in her gaze as she reclines languidly on a bright yellow sofa, was hung next to the American artist Henry Taylor's 'Ly for Me' (2010), a small, impressionistic image of a woman lying on an ornate couch in a cluttered living room. In both, the women are clothed, self-possessed and commanding of our gaze. They look as if they might get up and walk away at any moment.
There is a huge amount of work to take in and — given the focus on figurative art — there is also a lot of visual overlap. But pictures of people are also filled with stylistic choices, and these are as diverse as their makers.
Textures, textiles, postures and patterns repeat throughout, like calls from room to room: for instance, the glittering black rhinestone hair of the entangled paramours in Mickalene Thomas's humorously titled 'Never Change Lovers in the Middle of the Night' (2006), and the shimmering sequins and glitter that cover the locks of the central figure in Devan Shimoyama's 'The Abduction of Ganymede' (2019).
There are no pristine white spaces or rigid demarcations from room to room or theme to theme. Instead, paintings hang on green, red, ocher and orange walls. Free-standing displays bifurcate some spaces, but their structures are gently curved with ramps and sloping corners. A soundscape, made in response to the show by the South African composer and sound artist Neo Muyanga, plays throughout. If we need new ways of thinking about Black figurative art and how it fits into the canon, Kouoh's presentation seems to argue that we also need new kinds of spaces within the museum itself.
At the close of the show hangs 'The Birthday Party' (2021) by Esiri Erheriene-Essi, which shows the South African anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko, who was murdered by the police at age 30. In this picture, painted in warm hues, he is very much alive: thriving, holding out a birthday cake, surrounded by friends, wearing a Malcolm X pin on his shirt and the badge from a London soccer team on his hat. It is a scene of sheer joy.
Next year, when Kouoh becomes the first African woman to oversee the Venice Biennale, I look forward to seeing more of the ambitious ethos that underpins the Brussels show: the refusal of neat lineages in favor of new ways of seeing the past, present and future.

I Forgot John Mulaney Was in This Movie in This Week's Netflix Top 10

Every week, Netflix unveils its Top 10 lists for the week before, ranking TV shows and movies by viewership. As someone who covers streaming content (and also just watches a lot of TV), I keep an eye on the titles that come and go, and am always curious what hits and what doesn't. Last week, John Mulaney's Netflix animated series Big Mouth premiered a new season, and his Netflix talk show Everybody's Live with John Mulaney aired its season finale, so I was curious if either would crack the Netflix Top 10. Neither did, but ironically, a third Mulaney-involved title — Puss In Boots: The Last Wish — was in the No. 5 spot on the Netflix movie chart to my surprise, mostly because I forgot that he was even in it. (Sure, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish also stars Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Harvey Guillen and Florence Pugh, but for the sake of argument, today it's a John Mulaney film.) Mulaney has been incredibly busy for the past few years, and it feels like the past two months reached peak Mulaney saturation: the eighth and final season of Big Mouth premiered on May 23, while his talk show Everybody's Live with John Mulaney aired its season finale on May 28 after running for 12 truly weird and unpredictable weeks. (For weeks, the show teased that the finale would feature Mulaney brawling with three 14-year-old boys. And yes, that fight did happen, rest assured no children were harmed.) Between both of his Netflix shows and recent appearances on Peacock's Poker Face and SNL 50, I think that his ubiquity is why I had forgotten all about his role as Jack Horner, the main villain in Puss In Boots: The Last Wish. It's certainly not because the role wasn't memorable, he actually stole every scene he was in as the narcissistic nursery rhyme character with an inferiority complex. Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, which debuted in theaters in 2022, is not actually available on Netflix in the U.S., which makes it even more impressive that it's dominating the Global Top 10 based on its popularity in Central and South America, where it peaked at No. 1 and has remained in the Top 10 film in dozens of countries for five weeks. DreamWorks Once I remembered Mulaney's pivotal role in the movie, I started to wonder, is this guy secretly Netflix's biggest star? He seems to have been given creative carte blanche on his talk shows and stand-up specials and, while his comedy can be niche, he also stars in projects with global appeal, so he very well could be. The streamer has deals with bigger names like Adam Sandler, Tyler Perry and Millie Bobby Brown, but I think Mulaney may be their ringer. He also starred in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which was only just removed from Netflix in April, he has seven comedy specials on the platform, and he pops up in everything from Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee to this month's Conan O'Brien's Mark Twain Prize for American Humor special. He's in so many things that somehow they managed to overshadow The Last Wish in my mind. But the film, which has made almost $500 million globally, is hardly under the radar. Maybe while it remains in the Top 10, it will give him a chance to take a well-deserved break from Netflix and just chill. At least for a little while, before he starts plotting who to grapple on season 2 of Everybody's Live.

Ginny and Georgia has finally landed on Netflix for an unbelievably dramatic season three. The new 10-part season picks up right where the last one ended, with Georgia getting arrest for the murder of Tom Fuller. And now in the new season we'll be seeing her undergo trial and prove her innocence. Except if you've watched even one episode of this show, you'll know Georgia (Brianne Howey) is far from innocent. Over the first two series it's been revealed she's killed three people, shot another and committed a variety of crimes including theft and shoplifting. And as she is about to be put under the microscope, we thought it was only right to reexamine her various crimes, after all, it's been two years since the show was last on, so we're a little hazy on the details. So here is everything you need to know about Georgia Miller's murders. During Ginny and Georgia we get scenes both in the present timeline and also in various flashback timelines throughout Georgia's life. In season one we come to learn about Georgia's first murder. About a year after giving birth to Ginny, Georgia leaves Zion and his family and ends up working in a hotel in New Orleans. There, she meets Anthony Green, the owner of the hotel who looks after Ginny when she's working. During her time at the hotel Georgia starts an illegal poker ring to start earning some more money, however at one point she gets busted and lands in jail, with Ginny being sent to foster care. In order to try and get Ginny back, Georgia agrees to marry Anthony and come off as a woman in a happy healthy relationship with a stable home for her daughter. During their marriage she tries to knock him out with drugs to stop him irritating her, however she gives him too high a dosage and he overdoses. She calls on the help of the gang she used to run with called the Bloodeyes who help her to cover up the death and make it look like Anthony has gone missing. In season one we also learn about Georgia's first intentional murder. Just before they move to Wellsbury in the pilot episode, it turns out Georgia was married to a wealthy guy named Kenny Drexel. Kenny ran a series of yoga studios that Georgia ended up teaching at whilst married to him. One day she sees Kenny touch Ginny inappropriately and decides she needs to get her children out of the situation. She decides to kill Kenny by posinig him. She adds wolfsbane to his morning smoothie, which causes him to have a heart attack and crash his car while driving to work. This murder is unlike the others and is the one that sees Georgia land herself in jail. Throughout both seasons of the show, we know Georgia's frenemy Cynthia's husband Tom has suffered a serious illness which has left him in a coma. It takes it's toll on Cynthia throughout the series and at one point she tells Georgia in a drunken state: "I just want it to be over." In own twisted way of being a supportive friend, while picking Austin up from a playdate with Cynthia's son Zach, she goes into Tom's room and smothers his face with a pillow, killing him. What she doesn't realise at the time is Austin is watching his mother kill Tom from inside the cupboard. Will Georgia finally be sent to jail for her crimes? We really kinda hope not, but guess we'll just have to watch season three to find out. Ginny and Georgia is available on Netflix now

This fantasy action sequel just became one of Netflix's most-watched movies — and I'm not sure why

Fantasy fans might have spotted that an epic new action-adventure has crashed the Netflix US top 10 list. "Wrath of the Titans," Jonathan Liebesman's epic swords-and-sorcery follow-up to "Clash of the Titans" recently got added to the streaming service — and it looks to be a hit with subscribers. In just a few days, the sequel has already jumped up to the No. 3 spot in the streamer's most-watched movies list, behind the magical heist thriller "Now You See Me" and Netflix's recent crime thriller, "A Widow's Game". If you'd spotted the movie rising through the ranks and were trying to decide whether to stream "Wrath of the Titans" on Netflix, here's a little more info about the movie, and a quick round-up of critical opinion on the movie to help make up your mind. (spoilers: it's a definite skip from me) Following the box office success of "Clash of the Titans", Warner Bros. brought us another movie loosely inspired by the Greek mythos. Here, we find Perseus (Sam Worthington) attempting to live a quiet life as a fisherman and parent to his young son, Helius. Alas, conflict's brewing between the gods and the Titans, and when Ares (Édgar Ramirez) and Hades (Ralph Fiennes) ally with Titan leader Kronos, Perseus is dragged back into the fray. The traitorous gods make a deal to capture Perseus' father, Zeus (Liam Neeson), prompting the demigod to set off on a perilous journey into the underworld in order to rescue him. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. In addition to all those named above, "Wrath of the Titans" also stars Rosamund Pike, Toby Kebbell, Bill Nighy, Danny Huston, among others. Despite being a massive fantasy fan myself, I can't in good conscience recommend "Wrath of the Titans" unless you're really desperate to stream a loud, overblown swords-and-sorcery story. It's epic in genre and scope, but not exactly in terms of quality. The big draw here should be the action, and while some of the battles are well constructed (if edited in a disorienting manner), others lack real weight because they hinge so much on clashes with hulking beings mostly rendered with CGI. And, viewed through modern eyes, the effects certainly look dated (especially in the obviously made-for-3D viewings moments), and dominate the movie so much, making it quite a relentless and exhausting viewing experience. It wouldn't be as disappointing if "Wrath of the Titans" didn't also boast poor dialogue and stiff performances. And, seeing as practically every streaming service has turned its hand to fantasy at one point, these days, there are far better options out there (check out my round-up of the best fantasy shows on Netflix, for starters). I'm not the only one who wouldn't recommend it, though. As I mentioned, "Wrath of the Titans" doesn't exactly come highly praised. At the time of writing, the fantasy sequel holds a mere 26% critics score on the review aggregator, Rotten Tomatoes, with an audience score of 49% — indicating at best mixed reactions. Empire's Helen O'Hara gave "Wrath of the Titans" a two-star rating, writing: "If even a tenth of the care and attention lavished on the production design and action sequences had been afforded the script, this could have been an adventure of legendary proportions. As it is, this fizzles whenever anyone opens their mouths." Want a second opinion? Well, critic Roger Ebert echoed that take in his own two-star review: ""Wrath of the Titans' is obviously not concerned with plausibility. It lacks a comprehensible story, and you won't need your Cliff Notes on the Greek myths. You get an idea of who the major players are, and then they spend a modest amount of time shouting laughable dialogue at one another while being all but forced off the screen by special effects." Audience reactions on the platform vary wildly; some RT reviewers have "Wrath of the Titans" logged as a 5-star watch or "overhated" as a blockbuster release. Others, meanwhile, describe it as "boring," "forgettable," "cliché" and a "total waste of my time." Not sold on "Wrath of the Titans" after reading those takes?
