Nintendo can put your Switch 2 permanently offline if you use mods

People are learning the hard way what happens if you try to run modified games on Nintendo Switch 2. The launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 may mark a new era for Nintendo, but one thing that will never change is the company's dislike of pirates and modders. Nintendo is fiercely protective of its hardware and software, which is why it has routinely forced emulators to be shut down. The story of Gary Bowser in 2023 also shows how ruthless the company can be towards those it catches modifying Nintendo hardware. So, it should come as no surprise that Nintendo has been proactive in preventing such activity with the Switch 2, with reports throughout the week revealing that the console can detect pirated or modified software and permanently disable all online connectivity as punishment for using them. Some Switch 2 owners have reported such instances after attempting to use a device called a MIG Switch on the console. The MIG Switch is a cartridge that you can dump Switch games onto, essentially serving as an all-in-one cartridge for your game library. While you can download pirated game files from the internet onto the MIG Switch, some use it as a means of backing up Switch games they've legally bought, though Nintendo clearly doesn't care about that distinction. Since the Switch 2 is backwards compatible, those who own a MIG Switch cartridge decided to see if it works on the new console. Apparently, it should following a firmware update, but it seems Nintendo was one step ahead of them. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. According to the likes of SwitchTools on X and givemeupvotes on Reddit, using the MIG cartridge will prompt an error message and ban you from accessing Nintendo's online services forever more. It doesn't appear to brick the console entirely, however. As demonstrated in a YouTube video by Scattered Brain, it's still possible to access and play games offline, so it's not as if the ban turns the console into a paperweight. More Trending That said, the ban is believed to be built into the hardware itself, and is independent of your Nintendo account. The ban makes it impossible to unlink the account and virtual game cards from the console and when Scattered Brain attempted a factory reset, that wound up bricking their console entirely. Nintendo's policy is that it warns Switch 2 owners not to mess around with the hardware like this. In fact, ahead of the console's launch, it updated its account services user agreement to say it has the right to 'render the Nintendo Account Services and/or the applicable Nintendo device permanently unusable in whole or in part' if you violate its policy. At least, that's what the US version reads, though we can't imagine there's any more leeway here in the UK since it still states any hardware modifications violate Nintendo's code of conduct. Despite all this, it's unlikely this will put an end to any Nintendo related piracy. People are stubborn and are bound to try and come up with workarounds, regardless of the threat of legal action. We tried a little camera perfect for kids

Hardly any of us have an actual camera, but if the kids demand to use our mobiles, then at best they may run off for a sneaky half-hour of otherwise-banned YouTube under their bed, and at worst they may drop it, break the device and destroy our actual entire work and home life in the space of a second. Rosanna trying out the Photo Creator Mini Cam Digital Camera | Tom Morton/NationalWorld And that's before we get to the fact that even a safely returned phone will be absolutely rammed full of pictures of the top of their face, the ceiling, the stairs, and so on - and these will need to be deleted not just from the device but from the cloud as well, for fear of Google running out of space. All in all, not the dream. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Some of Rosanna's photographic efforts from her younger days - on my phone | Rosanna Morton/NationalWorld So, imagine my delight on stumbling across a camera which not only takes pictures and video, but is lightweight, child friendly, and doesn't cost the earth. It's the Photo Creator Mini Digital Camera, and it looks like the answer to many of our prayers….. So, on to the details. To be technical about it, the camera is roughly 5cm wide by 3cm high, and weighs next to nothing. It's small enough that a five-year-old can hold it, and comes with a 1GB micro SD card, which is enough for a hell of a lot of pictures. It must be said that it is also small enough to lose easily, and it's understandable why there's a keyring hook on the side. The battery gives up to an hour of use, and recharges via USB-C. The Photo Creator Mini Cam Digital Camera | Canal Toys We found it a blast. Rosanna, five, spent a happy sunny afternoon taking pictures of butterflies, grass, a pond and, er, a sign about wildlife in our local park. She had already practised taking many shots of her brother and her breakfast as a warm up, and - as small children do - had mastered the controls before I had had a chance to say something boring about reading the instructions. As she said, quite simply: 'I love this camera because I can carry it round with me and take pictures.' In a nutshell it's press the button for a picture, hold for a video - something even I could get my head around. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Photo Creator Mini Cam Digital Camera | Canal Toys It doesn't take absolutely superb pictures - although they are perfectly serviceable - and the effects that can be added are OK but hardly Insta-esque. Some of the video has a Super-8, home movie feel, but that's no criticism, and to be honest that's not the point. It will be a camera that "belongs" to a little one, and all in all, for £15 this is very good value for money. The kids can go off and master being creative - and you need never fear for your phone again. Perfect.

New Big Man movie shows just how good your iPhone really is, watch it free today

The latest movie to be shot on iPhone launches tonight and proves what you can do with the smart device in your pocket. It might look like a big-budget blockbuster movie, but the latest short film arriving on YouTube has been filmed entirely on an iPhone. Big Man, which stars R&B legend Stormzy, tells the fictional story of Tenzman, a world-weary musician, and the two bright, mischievous kids who come into his life by chance. Directed by Academy Award-winner Aneil Karia, the mini flick has used the iPhone 16 Pro's triple-lens snapper to capture the action rather than a high-end production rig. ‌ "I've never shot an entire piece of narrative filmmaking on an iPhone before, and it's been a really invigorating process," Karia explained. ‌ "It's much smaller than the traditional cameras used for television, film, or music videos, and the lightness and flexibility that comes with that is boundless in a sense. I like trying to strive for an intimacy with characters, and sometimes a big camera is not particularly conducive for that. So it's been huge, being in smaller spaces, being lower key for the actors.' Big Man will go live at 8 pm tonight on YouTube, but you can watch the trailer here before its official release. Considering it's been filmed on a phone, it looks good enough for the cinema, and that might have something to do with the upgrades found on the latest models from Apple. The iPhone 16 Pro now features the ability to capture cinematic slow-motion scenes with 4K 120 fps. This is then able to add a more dynamic quality to the shot. There's also the clever Cinematic mode, which is able to add a blurred background and foreground effect to what's being filmed, plus the 16 Pro now gets improved low-light capabilities. Speaking about the process of movie making on a phone, Director of Photography, Stuart Bentley, said: 'Traditionally, filmmaking was the reserve of a small section of people and you couldn't access it. "It felt completely impenetrable to me as a young kid. And I think now people have this amazing camera in their pocket, and it's like everybody can do it. If you're hungry and passionate about cinema, there's no reason you can't make an amazing film. ‌ "Do it all on an iPhone, it's all there for you. "I guess ultimately what's been really interesting is it's a super versatile camera with all these different kind of tools. You can use Cinematic mode so you get that shallow depth of field, and it automatically pulls focus to follow the action. You can shoot 120 frames per second at 4K, which is obviously insane. It's got an incredible dynamic range. It can handle dark, low-light environments in a really amazing way, and shooting with Apple LOG gives you even more options in post. "We're pushing the camera to the very limits of what it's capable of, and we've found it to be really resilient. This isn't the first time things have been shot on an iPhone. Back in 2023, Apple revealed that its entire 30-minute MacBook keynote had been shot entirely on an iPhone 15 Pro. If you want to watch the Big Man movie, it will be available on Apple's YouTube page from 8pm tonight, June 18th.
