Visa partners with AI giants to streamline online shopping

(Reuters) -Visa is partnering with tech heavyweights, including Microsoft and OpenAI, to roll out a new platform that lets users delegate their online shopping tasks to AI agents.
While users will set spending limits, the AI agents will do the rest — searching for products, booking vacations or ordering groceries, the payments processor said on Wednesday.
WHY IT'S IMPORTANT
Digital commerce companies often try to shorten the time between consumers selecting a product and making a payment to prevent them from abandoning their purchases midway.
Shorter checkout times have become even more crucial since the COVID-19 pandemic, when many users shifted to online shopping.
A 2020 report by Experian found that one in three customers were only willing to wait 30 seconds or less before abandoning an online transaction.
Visa's new platform, Visa Intelligent Commerce, could help reduce friction by letting AI handle routine tasks while customers only make the final call. The smoother shopping experience could encourage more spending.
CONTEXT
AI agents are systems that can act autonomously to perform certain tasks. Unlike chatbots, agents do not require constant human input.
They are expected to become a bigger part of businesses' AI plans in the future. An analysis by Boston Consulting Group projects the market could grow at an average annual rate of 45% from 2024 to 2030.
Besides Microsoft and OpenAI, Visa is also collaborating with Anthropic, IBM, Mistral AI, Perplexity, Samsung and Stripe.

Johor secures RM162bil in investments, created 53,000 jobs in three years
ISKANDAR PUTERI: Johor attracted over RM162.2 billion in investments across 1,761 projects from 2022 to 2024, generating 53,764 direct job opportunities, said State Investment, Trade and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Lee Ting Han. Lee said the jobs were created progressively over three years - 16,762 in 2022, 19,053 in 2023, and 17,949 in 2024, which represented roles within the investment sector alone. Lee said Johor is focussed on securing high-value, high-skill investments in sectors such as semiconductors, petrochemicals and data centres. "Global tech giants like Microsoft and ByteDance have anchored Johor as Malaysia's largest data centre hub, opening doors to skilled ICT jobs," he said. Johor has also seen rising investment in tech manufacturing, with firms like Wiwynn and Supermicro setting up facilities to meet the data centre supply chain, creating roles in R&D, engineering and project management. Lee added that spillover effects from major investments and high-impact projects were also driving demand in related sectors such as banking, auditing, logistics and consulting. "For instance, Mercedes-Benz has established a regional logistics hub in Senai, not only creating logistics jobs, but also boosting support services like warehousing and transport," he said.

UK partners with tech giants to train 7.5 million workers in AI skills
LONDON, June 9 — The UK government is to team up with tech-giants including Google, Microsoft and Amazon to train 7.5 million workers in AI skills, Prime Minister Keir Starmer is to announce today. Starmer is also set to unveil £187 million (US$253 million) in funding to help develop tech abilities for one million secondary school students, as part of its 'TechFirst' programme to bring AI learning into classrooms and communities. 'We are putting the power of AI into the hands of the next generation—so they can shape the future, not be shaped by it,' Starmer was to say, according to extracts released by his Downing Street office. 'This training programme will unlock opportunity in every classroom—and lays the foundations for a new era of growth,' he was to add. The UK's AI sector is valued at £72 billion and is projected to exceed £800 billion by 2035. It is growing 30 times faster than the rest of the economy, employing over 64,000 people, according to government figures. Alongside TechFirst, Starmer was also to announce a government-industry partnership to train 7.5 million workers, with tech giants committing to make training materials freely available to businesses over the next five years. Training will focus on teaching workers to use chatbots and large language models to boost productivity. Google EMEA President Debbie Weinstein called it a 'crucial initiative' essential developing AI skills, unlocking AI-powered growth 'and cementing the UK's position as an AI leader'. The government was also to sign two Memorandums of Understanding with semiconductor firm NVIDIA, 'supporting the development of a nationwide AI talent pipeline', according to the UK government. — AFP

(EPA Images pic) SAN FRANCISCO : Microsoft unveiled its first Xbox-branded handheld gaming devices today, touting them as a way to play its vast library of titles anywhere. Two 'ROG Xbox Ally' models made in a partnership with Taiwan-based ASUS will be available by the year-end holiday season, Xbox president Sarah Bond said during an online event showcasing games heading for the platform. 'The Xbox Ally is an Xbox you can hold in your hands, bringing together the power of Xbox and the freedom of Windows,' Bond said. 'On this Xbox, you can play games across your entire library, including all the Windows PC game stores from Xbox and to Steam, GOG (Good Old Games platform) and Ubisoft Connect.' The peek at Xbox Ally came just days after the release of Nintendo's Switch 2, the handheld console that could score record early sales for the Japanese 'Super Mario' creator. The Nintendo device, which features a bigger screen and more processing power, is an upgrade to the Switch that became a global phenomenon with hit games such as 'Animal Crossing.' Microsoft promised to disclose pricing and release date details for Xbox Ally in the coming months. Both Xbox handhelds appeared similar to Microsoft console controllers in terms of buttons, toggles and grips but looked elongated to provide room for center screens.
