Who is Mark Walter? What to know about Los Angeles Lakers new majority owner Show Caption Hide Caption Lakers' offseason: How to improve around Luka Doncic The Lakers must decide how to move forward with Luka Doncic as their new centerpiece after a surprising playoff loss. Mark Walter just became one of the most powerful owners in all of sports. The CEO and founder of holding company TWG Global is set to acquire a majority ownership stake in the Los Angeles Lakers, acquiring it from the Buss family − led by Jeanie Buss − for a $10 billion valuation. It's not only a monumental day in Los Angeles, but in the United States as it becomes the most expensive purchase agreement of a U.S. pro sports franchise in history. Magic Johnson shades Celtics after historic $10 billion Lakers sale

Lakers legend Magic Johnson applauded the agreement to sell the organization to Dodgers owner Mark Walter for an astonishing $10 billion — and found a way to poke fun at the Celtics. The pending sale — reportedly the largest ever for a sports team — is set to end the Buss family's control of one of the NBA's marquee franchises. 'Job well done to my sister Jeanie Buss for striking an incredible deal and picking the right person to carry on the @Lakers legacy and tradition of winning,' Johnson, who owns a minority stake in the Dodgers, wrote on X shortly after the agreement was reported. Advertisement Johnson then had some fun at the Celtics' expense, citing the March sale of the Boston franchise. 3 Magic Johnson and Jeanie Buss exchange a hug during the game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers on March 11, 2018. NBAE via Getty Images 'Just like I thought, when the Celtics sold for $6B, I knew the Lakers were worth $10B!' Johnson wrote. Johnson called Walter a 'business partner' and a 'friend' — as they are both in the Dodgers' ownership group — in the social media post before going on to extol the CEO and chairman of TWG Global's accolades. Advertisement 'Mark Walter is the best choice and will be the best caretaker of the Laker brand,' the Lakers' great wrote. 'The proof is in the pudding on what he's been able to accomplish with the LA Dodgers. Mark has been nothing short of a winner notching 2 World Series and 11 NL West divisional titles in the last 12 years!' Johnson added on a second post that Walter is 'driven by winning, excellence, and doing everything the right way.' The Buss family has owned the Lakers since 1979, when Jerry Buss bought the franchise from Jack Kent Cooke in a $67.5 million deal, which also included the NHL Kings and the Los Angeles Forum, the two teams' home at the time. Dodgers' Dave Roberts Makes Decision After Shohei Ohtani Pitching Debut

Dodgers' Dave Roberts Makes Decision After Shohei Ohtani Pitching Debut originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Shohei Ohtani made his first appearance on the mound since August of 2023, a consequence a September surgery to repair damage in his throwing elbow. Advertisement While Ohtani was able to excel as the Dodgers' designated hitter in 2024, the real draw was his ability to pitch at an elite level while also swinging a hot bat in the same game. Manager Dave Roberts, who said he was "kind of fanboying" for half an inning, will manage the National League All-Star squad at the Midsummer Classic in Atlanta. While Ohtani will undoubtedly join Roberts at Truist Park, Roberts also made a decision on who he would send to finish the National League's coaching staff. Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani (17) and manager Dave Roberts (30) look on from the dugout in the seventh inning against the Los Angeles Angels at Dodger Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images The MLB announced that Roberts had invited Braves manager Brian Snitker along with Marlins manager Clayton McCullough to also coach the National League side in July. Advertisement Snitker's nomination isn't surprising, as the Braves will host the festivities, and Snitker is well-respected across the league. The surprising bit is inviting McCullough, whose Marlins are the fourth-worst team in baseball. McCullough was the Dodgers' first base coach from 2021 to 2024 before getting hired by the Marlins to manage the team, so that likely explains Roberts' decision. Roberts joined Yankees manager Aaron Boone as the skippers for this year's game, a rite he earned by winning the National League pennant in 2024. Roberts will likely get to manage several of his own players, including catcher Will Smith (1.12 million votes), Ohtani (1.4 million votes), Freddie Freeman (1.14 million votes) and Teoscar Hernandez (685,553 votes).
