Tivim's Kauthankars lose 2 family members at Shirgao

Panaji:
When the hearse van screeched outside a cluster of houses at Auchit-Vaddo, Tivim, there were several who crowded the area on Saturday. They were all waiting since morning for a glance at
Tanuja Kauthankar
and her 16-year-old nephew Aditya, both of whom lost their lives in the stampede at the
Lairai Devi Jatra
at Shirgao.

Tanuja's body was the first to be taken inside the house. Then, just next door, it was Aditya's turn. The cries all around were unbearable. A few women needed help, fainting at a sight that made it painful to keep their eyes open.
Bottles of mineral water kept outside the two houses were quickly emptied.
Amidst all this, Tanish Kauthankar stood stone-faced.
Tanish was part of the 40-member group from the village that had proceeded to Shirgao for the annual jatra.
After prayers at the temple, they were all headed towards the designated area where a massive bonfire is lit and devotees known as 'dhonds' walk barefoot across a bed of embers to seek blessings.
Tanish, a dhond himself, was looking forward to the annual ritual but en route he saw the world collapse in front of him.
'I was just behind and saw that she fell first,' Tanish told
TOI
. 'She got crushed under the weight of everyone falling over her.
We had about seven dhonds from this area alone and had gone there with families. There was so much rush that we had to move inside a house for safety.'
Tanish and Aditya went to the same school, St Anne's, answered the Class 10 exams together and had both secured admission at Saraswat College, Mapusa. They were to travel together every morning for their higher secondary school classes, but fate had something else in store.

'I just can't believe Aditya's no more. We just could not reach them to help. The ambulance came much later,' he said.
Nobody at the ward could believe what they were seeing. The Kauthankars are a closely knit family living in four homes in the ward, travelling to festivals together. The Lairai Devi Jatra was something they looked forward to every year.
Aditya's father Ankush and grandfather Vaman are both dhonds, strong believers in the deity.
'My brother and I were at home, my son just escaped,' said Rohidas Kauthankar, whose sister-in-law and nephew lost their lives. 'She was unwell and we had asked her not to go for the jatra but she was determined. They all left at 6pm (on Friday) and were to stay there for five days. But look how they have returned.'
Tanuja's daughter Ruthika is also among those injured, her leg fractured. She is bedridden at GMC, yet to be told that her mother is no more.
'This is a result of total mismanagement,' said Arun Shinde, who was among those who gathered outside the two houses with plenty on their minds.
'There were lakhs of people at the Exposition (in Old Goa) but there were plenty of police personnel and dedicated first aid facilities at every step,' he said. 'Here, despite thousands attending, there was neither proper medical services nor police security. It was a mess.'
Another neighbour wondered what happened to the promised tight security and the drones that were supposedly deployed for aerial surveillance.
'People have lost their lives. What do you tell their families,' asked a neighbour, unable to come to terms with the fact that those with whom he exchanged smiles just yesterday are gone today.

‘Shortage of staff, CCTV': Bengaluru Police red-flagged risks of RCB event hours before stampede, say reports

Several reports emerged on Sunday, claiming that a Karnataka police official had warned of the risks of holding a felicitation ceremony for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Vidhana Soudha. Despite the warning, the government went ahead with it on June 4 and held the event in the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The event was first supposed to take place on the grand steps of the state legislative assembly building. A letter dated June 4, accessed by the Times of India and NDTV, showed that senior police officer MN Karibasavana Gowda had warned of security concerns and flagged it to the Department of Personnel and Administrative reforms (DPAR). Gowda had reportedly said there was an acute shortage of officers and personnel. According to TOI, he told DPAR head G Satyavathi that this will severely hamper security arrangements (bandobast) for such a large-scale event. "Lakhs of cricket fans are likely to come to Vidhana Soudha. Since there is a shortage of security personnel, making bandobast will be a problem," MN Karibasavana Gowda, in-charge of security at the legislature, wrote to DPAR secretary G Sathyavathi. In the letter, Gowda also pointed to the venue's sensitive status and lack of adequate CCTV coverage. DPAR official Sathyavathi, who was overseeing arrangements at Vidhana Soudha steps, then publicly urged fans to head to the stadium instead - a short distance away. "The team was feted at the legislature and the celebrations then moved on to the stadium. But fears of overcrowding had set in well in advance," the TOI reported. Despite the warning, the celebrations over the RCB's first-ever victory in the IPL game was allegedly rushed through — less than 24 hours after the final match — without proper crowd control or safety protocols, the report added. Sources told TOI that Vidhana Soudha's Deputy Commissioner of Police's (DCP) note was also shared with then Bengaluru police commissioner B Dayananda, who in turn flagged it to chief secretary Shalini Rajneesh. But permissions were still granted. Later, in the evening of June 4, lakhs of cricket and RCB fans thronged the street outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru for the victory celebrations, leading to a stampede that claimed 11 lives. The stampede took place ahead of RCB team's felicitation after winning their Indian Premier League (IPL) title by defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS) in a tight final on Tuesday. Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah recently ordered an increase in the compensation announced for the families of those who died in the stampede to ₹ 25 lakh each. The government had earlier announced a compensation of ₹ 10 lakh each. The top senior officials of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), Secretary A Shankar and Treasurer ES Jairam, tendered their resignations, taking "moral responsibility" for the stampese. On June 5, Siddaramaiah had announced that a one-man commission would be formedto look into the procedural lapses in the issue, and the commission has been asked to give the report in 30 days.

Sakshi Gupta had gained unauthorised access to more than 110 accounts of 41 customers and executed multiple illegal transactions. Rs 4.58 crore siphoned off - over 100 accounts of customers accessed - fixed deposits broken: This is not some movie plot - it's a stunning fraud that a former ICICI Bank relationship manager pulled off! The multi-crore fraud continued for over two years. The accused, Sakshi Gupta, who served at ICICI Bank 's Shriram Nagar branch in Kota's DCM area from 2020 to 2023, was taken into custody by Udhyog Nagar police on May 31, 2025 after a thorough investigation. According to a TOI report, police records indicate that the fraudulent activities were initially discovered on February 18. Following ICICI Bank's internal probe that identified Sakshi Gupta, who previously worked as a relationship manager at the bank's DCM branch in Kota, as the primary suspect in a significant financial fraud affecting customer accounts, the Kota police have begun their enquiry. The authorities are examining potential accomplices and have asked the bank to furnish pertinent documentation. How former ICICI Bank relationship manager committed fraud: 10 Points The investigation revealed that Sakshi Gupta had gained unauthorised access to more than 110 accounts of 41 customers and executed multiple illegal transactions. Investigators found that she had diverted the misappropriated funds into stock market investments, which subsequently resulted in substantial financial losses. In order to hide the deception, Gupta allegedly substituted the registered mobile numbers of various bank accounts with those of her family members. The actual account holders were unable to receive transaction notifications and one-time passwords (OTPs) due to this modification, according to police reports. The investigation revealed multiple fraudulent activities by Gupta, including unauthorised activation of overdraft facilities across 40 accounts. Further findings showed that she had unlawfully terminated fixed deposits belonging to 31 clients, channeling Rs 1.34 crore to different accounts. The probe uncovered her unauthorised usage of debit cards, along with their associated PINs and OTPs, to conduct various online and ATM transactions. Additionally, Gupta was found responsible for processing a fraudulent personal loan amounting to Rs 3.4 lakh. The investigation also established that she had extensively utilised Insta Kiosk machines and digital banking platforms to execute numerous fraudulent transactions. The illicit funds were distributed across several Demat accounts, suggesting an attempt to conceal the money trail. After identifying irregularities, bank manager Tarun Dadhich registered a complaint, which led to a comprehensive audit and subsequent police investigation. "She systematically transferred funds, sometimes using the account of an elderly woman who had no knowledge of the activity as a pool account," said sub-inspector Ibrahim of Udhyog Nagar police station. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "By mid-February 2023, over Rs 3 crore had passed through that single account."
