ADGM Courts enhance access to justice with Pro Bono Mediation scheme

Zawya02-07-2025
Abu Dhabi, UAE: ADGM Courts announced today the launch of its Pro Bono Mediators Panel, marking a significant step in expanding access to justice and further strengthening its Court-Annexed Mediation Scheme, which was established in 2019, as a first for the region.
The new Panel will comprise internationally accredited mediators who wish to contribute their expertise on a Pro Bono basis, while gaining valuable experience through court-annexed mediations.
This initiative supports parties seeking early resolution of disputes within ADGM Courts' jurisdiction who may benefit from mediation and foster the next generation of global mediation talent. The first cohort of pro-bono mediators is now in place, with further application rounds to be announced.
Mediation offers parties a confidential forum to negotiate the resolution of their dispute via a process during which they retain full control. In the context of court-annexed mediation, a written settlement agreement signed by all parties becomes legally binding. If proceedings have commenced, the Court will issue an order giving effect to the settlement agreement, which may be enforced at a party's request.
With the objective of promoting and fostering mediation as an effective, efficient and viable method of dispute resolution, the Pro Bono Mediators Panel offer access to internationally accredited mediators from diverse jurisdictions and sectors who possess high standards of skill, knowledge and expertise, while also supporting emerging talent.
Linda Fitz-Alan, Registrar and Chief Executive of ADGM Courts, stated, 'Since its inception in 2019, the Court-Annexed Mediation Scheme has demonstrated substantial impact, achieving a settlement rate of around 80% year on year. The establishment of the Pro Bono Mediators Panel marks an important next step in the evolution of the Scheme and reflects ADGM Courts' long-standing commitment to promoting mediation as an outstanding method of dispute resolution, especially for the new wave of disputes in technology and climate. Whilst strengthening the support available to parties seeking early settlement of disputes, I am delighted that we can now offer emerging mediators a valuable opportunity to practise within a leading international commercial framework.'
Court-annexed mediation offered by ADGM Courts will be conducted by court officers or independent pro bono mediators appointed by the Registrar. For more information, visit the Court-Annexed Mediation Scheme here or email mediation@adgmcourts.com.

Low-cost flights to resume in Jordan by late 2025

AMMAN — Low-cost airlines are expected to resume flights to Jordan in the final quarter of 2025, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Lina Annab has announced. Speaking to Al Mamlaka TV, Annab said the ministry is in ongoing contact with several low-cost carriers to accelerate the return of their operations to the Kingdom. The minister attributed the suspension of services to recent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which prompted airlines to temporarily redirect their routes to other destinations in the region, including away from Jordan. She noted that the tourism sector has begun to stabilise following a two-week period of unrest in June, triggered by the Israeli-Iranian air war. According to the minister, Jordan has witnessed improvements in visitor numbers, tourism growth, and revenues in recent months. Official figures show outbound tourism spending rose by 3.3 per cent in the first half of 2025, reaching US$999.7 million. However, spending in June dropped sharply by 22.7 per cent to US$195.6 million. Inbound tourism revenue climbed 11.9% during the same period, totalling US$3.667 billion, despite a 3.7% dip in June to US$619.2 million, largely due to the impact of regional tensions. Data from the Central Bank of Jordan indicated significant increases in tourism income from various regions: 42.9 per cent from Asian nationalities, 35.6 per cent from European travellers, 25.8 per cent from American visitors, and 11.5 per cent from Arab tourists. Revenue from other nationalities rose by 43.0 per cent.

UAE: Why are shoppers spending more on gold coins and bars, less on jewellery?

Shoppers in the UAE are increasingly buying gold bars and coins, while reducing their spending on gold jewellery, driven by rising global gold prices and economic uncertainty. According to the latest data from the World Gold Council, gold jewellery demand in the UAE declined by 16 per cent year-on-year, falling to 7.7 tonnes in Q2 2025 from 9.2 tonnes in the same period last year. This marks the second consecutive quarterly decline in jewellery consumption. In contrast, demand for gold bars and coins surged, rising 25 per cent year-on-year to 4.1 tonnes in Q2 2025, compared to 3.3 tonnes in Q2 2024. On a quarterly basis, demand jumped 31 per cent, reflecting a growing appetite for physical gold assets. Despite the uptick in investment demand, overall gold consumption in the UAE fell by 5 per cent year-on-year to 11.8 tonnes in the second quarter. However, it still registered a 7.2 per cent increase compared to the previous quarter. As previously reported by Khaleej Times, gold prices in the UAE have climbed by approximately Dh100 per gram over the past year, largely due to rising global prices. This increase has been fuelled by ongoing geopolitical tensions, trade tariffs, and continued buying by central banks. During the second quarter, gold traded at elevated levels, with 24K gold consistently above Dh400 per gram. As of Thursday morning, 24K gold was priced at Dh397.5 per gram in Dubai, up nearly Dh3 from the previous night. Other varieties were also trading high, with 22K at Dh368.0, 21K at Dh353.0, and 18K at Dh302.5 per gram. The average gold price rose 40 per cent year-on-year, reaching $3,280 per ounce in Q2 2025, compared to $2,338 in the same period last year, according to the World Gold Council. In response to record-high prices, UAE consumers are moving toward gold bars and coins for investment purposes and are increasingly opting for more affordable 18K jewellery for personal use, balancing aesthetic appeal with cost-effectiveness. 'Middle Eastern gold demand in the second quarter largely reflected global trends,' said Andrew Naylor, head of Middle East and Public Policy at the World Gold Council. 'Jewellery consumption across the region declined 11 per cent year-on-year, as high prices and persistent geopolitical instability dampened consumer sentiment.' Naylor added that investment in gold bars and coins across the region rose by 4 per cent year-on-year, though the UAE stood out with a significant increase as local investors sought a safe haven. 'In other markets, some investors opted to cash in profits amid continued price rises,' he noted. Looking ahead to the second half of 2025, Naylor expects gold to retain its allure across the Middle East, although sustained high prices could restrain consumer demand for jewellery. Globally, total gold demand soared 45 per cent year-on-year to $132 billion in Q2 2025. 'Investor flows were again the primary driver, motivated by safe-haven demand and the record price of gold. Central bank purchases remained strong, albeit slightly below recent years. While the volume of jewellery demand fell, its total value increased due to the high gold price,' the World Gold Council report concluded.
