Umpire Brian Knight retires due to injuries, replaced on MLB staff by Charlie Ramos
Knight, 50, made his major league debut on May 7, 2011, as the third base umpire for Texas' home game against the Chicago White Sox and was promoted to the major league staff in 2011. He worked the 2023 World Series and the 2006 and '23 World Baseball Classics. Knight was the plate umpire for Jon Lester's no-hitter against Kansas City at Boston's Fenway Park on May 19, 2008.
Knight worked his last game on the field when Seattle played at Tampa Bay on June 26, 2024.
Ramos, 37, made his big league debut as the second base umpire for Boston's game at Toronto on Aug. 25, 2020, and has had 529 major league assignments as a call-up from the minors, including as a replay official.

Wallabies hooker David Porecki retires from rugby
SYDNEY (AP) — Hooker David Porecki, who was a late injury withdrawal from Australia's lineup for the third test against the British and Irish Lions last weekend, has announced his retirement. Rugby Australia issued a statement Tuesday saying the 32-year-old Porecki, who sustained a heel injury last week, was retiring immediately and ending a career that included five seasons in Britain with Saracens and London Irish from 2015. He returned to Australia and the New South Wales Waratahs ahead of the 2021 Super Rugby season, and made his test debut a year later in a win for Australia against England in Perth. Porecki was part of Australia's 2023 Rugby World Cup squad and became the 88th Wallabies captain after an injury to Will Skelton, leading the team in three of its four pool matches at the tournament. Two-time champion Australia was eliminated in the group stage for the first time ever at a Rugby World Cup, hastening a change of coaching staff and leadership. Injury sidelined Porecki in 2024 but he returned to the Wallabies squad last month and started against Fiji in Australia's first test of 2025. His 21st and final test was at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on July 26, when the Lions clinched the three-test series with a contentious late try. PHOENIX (AP) — Corbin Carroll and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. each drove in two runs, Brandon Pfaadt pitched into the sixth inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Diego Padres 6-2 on Monday night. Tyler Locklear and Alek Thomas each hit a solo homer for Arizona. Pfaadt (11-7) gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings and was replaced in the sixth by Andrew Hoffmann with runners at first and third and two out. Hoffman got Ryan O'Hearn to fly out to end the threat and pitched a 1-2-3 seventh before Kyle Backhus got the final six outs for his first career save.
