Benilde overcomes Perpetual, ends ALTAs' reign in NCAA men's volleyball

There will be a new champion in NCAA men's volleyball soon.
On Sunday, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde defeated the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA, 24-26, 25-22, 30-28, 25-17, to eliminate the ALTAs from playoff contention in the NCAA Season 100 men's volleyball tournament and end the Las Piñas crew's hopes for a fifth straight crown.
The two teams were neck-and-neck early in the fourth set as they were tied at 8 before the Blazers pulled away and took a 14-10 lead. Perpetual caught up as it trailed 16-14, but Benilde pulled away anew with the likes of Raymark Betco and James Marasigan leading in the rally.
With Benilde leading 20-16, Jeff Marapoc tried to put Perpetual closer, but Marasigan, Mike Balbacal, Jacob Herrera, scored three straight for the Blazers. A service ace from Marasigan put Benilde at match point before Rocky Roy Motol sealed the victory.
Motol led the Blazers with 28 points from 25 attacks and three blocks, to go with 17 receptions and nine digs, while Jacob Agassi Herrera added 19 points. Marasigan had his own triple-double of 14 points, 23 receptions, and 12 digs, while 13 points.
Kobe Brian Taguba's 29 points and Marapoc's 16-point output for the ALTAs went to naught as Perpetual fell short in the end game.
Benilde, now at the top spot with 14-3, will still play Lyceum of the Philippines University on Friday. Perpetual, who slipped to 9-8, will wrap its season on Wednesday against San Beda University.

Mycah Go prioritizes Benilde first with NCAA Finals, PVL Draft happening on same day
De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde veteran Mycah Go has a lot on her plate right now. Last Sunday, Go and the Lady Blazers dispatched Mapua University and booked another trip to the NCAA women's volleyball finals. Days before that, Go attended the PVL Draft Combine, although she did not participate in the said event on its second day. On June 8, however, the NCAA Season 97 MVP will have to juggle her events as she will play with Benilde in the NCAA finals at 2:30 p.m. in San Juan, then go straight to the PVL Draft in Quezon City. "Hindi pa ako tapos sa Benilde so priority ko pa rin ang Benilde and katawan ko," Go said last Sunday after a hectic week of activities for her. "Unahin ko muna ang NC, mas gusto ko pa rin na maganda ang tapos ko [rito]," she added. [I'm not yet done with Benilde so my priorities are still Benilde and my body... I'll put NC first, I still want to finish strong here.] Go has been a part of Benilde's four straight finals appearances. In Season 98, despite her injury, Go was still on the Benilde bench as part of the coaching staff. Now, she has a chance to get her third title as a student-athlete. "Tuloy pa rin, tuloy pa rin sa pagtrabaho, [ayusin] kung anong kailangan i-improve," she said. Jake Pangilinan making up for lost time after missing most of his rookie year to care for late father
By BEA MICALLER,GMA Integrated News Instead of on the court, Jake Pangilinan was at home in Tarlac during most of his rookie year last season to care for his father before his passing. Driven by his father's memory and a renewed purpose, the 20-year-old middle blocker is now emerging as a vital force for Arellano University as the Chiefs make their Final Four push in the NCAA Season 100 men's volleyball tournament. "Nu'ng rookie year po ako hindi po ako nakapaglaro dahil namatay 'yung father ko tapos ngayon lang po ako nakabalik," Pangilinan shared to GMA News Online on Wednesday. "Umuwi po ako ng province [last season] tapos nakabalilk po ako last year semis na po pero hindi na rin po ako nakalaro dahil sa nangyari sa bahay po." [During my rookie year, I couldn't play because my father passed and I was only able to come back now... I went home to the province and when I returned last year, it was the semis already. But I wasn't able to play because of what happened at home.] The 6-foot-1 net anchor is turning that heartbreak into his fuel this year. A key part of the starting lineup, Pangilinan consistently provides the help to his veterans in fellow middle blocker Anfernee Curamen, setter Adi Villados, and outside spiker Carl Berdal in their bid to make the finals for the first time since Season 93, following years only reaching the Final Four round. And in one of their biggest games, Pangilinan made sure he gave his best. He posted a career-high six blocks to finish with 11 points in their four-set escape of twice-to-beat Mapua University, helping the Chiefs drag the Cardinals to a sudden death showdown on Friday, where a finals ticket will be up for grabs. But more than the game, Pangilinan shared it's his way of honoring his late father. "Nagawa ko po 'yung dream ko para kay Papa ko po kasi ang gusto ko po talaga ay mapanood po ako sa malalalaking liga kasi ayon po 'yung dream niya para sa akin," he added. "Ang gusto ko lang din po sana is this season matulungan ko 'yung mga aalis na seniors kaya nagdo-double time po kami palagi sa training, hindi po kami nagpapahinga at nagkakaisa po kami lagi." [I was able to achieve my dream for my Papa because what I really wanted is to be seen in a big league, that was his dream for me... Judiel Nitura moved by sister Shaina's surprise visit as Letran clinches finals ticket

For one, it sent the Lady Knights back to the finals, earning a shot at redemption opposite four-peat seeking De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, the same team that defeated them in last year's finals. But what made the victory sweeter was the surprise presence of her sister Shaina, who watched a game this season for the first time, and it coincided with one of Judiel's finest performances this year. Judiel appreciated the gesture, sharing she understands Shaina's hectic schedule, which includes her role with Adamson University in the UAAP and the Alas Pilipinas national team. Syempre na-touch din ako kasi nakahanap siya ng time para manood sa akin," Judiel told GMA News Online. "Busy lang talaga kasi 'yung bata sa training tapos may Alas pa siya. Na-miss ko rin siya. Last na kita namin siguro mga one or two months ago na kasi busy din po kami kasi twice-a-day 'yung training namin." [This was Shaina's first time to watch. Of course, I was touched that she found the time to watch me... She is so busy with training and she also has Alas. I've missed her. Last I saw her was one or two monhts ago because we've also been busy with twice-a-day training.] Judiel, who admitted she didn't know her younger sister would be watching the match, led Letran to a 30-28, 25-12, 25-21 win over the Lady Chiefs to book the last finals ticket. She poured in a team-high 17 points anchored on 15 attacks and two blocks, steering the Lady Knights to a second consecutive championship appearance. "Hindi ko alam na nanood siya. After the game ko lang nalaman kaya na-touch ako, naiyak ako. Si Mama lang 'yung alam ko na manonood," Judiel added. "Nagkakasagasa din kasi 'yung schedule namin kaya hirap na hirap din siyang humanap ng time. Ako nanonood sa game nila." [I didn't know she was going to watch. I only found out after the game which is why I was touched. I cried. I only knew that Mama was going to watch... Our schedules have conflicted so she it has been tough on her to find time. I've been the one watching her games.] But Judiel knows the work doesn't stop here as they now shift into higher gear ahead of another finals showdown with the Lady Blazers starting on Sunday. "Stay focused and 'yung mindset namin dapat sobrang taas ng tingin sa sarili namin. Dapat lagi lang din kaming makinig sa mga coaches para alam namin 'yung mga galaw."
