Indian army operation on Myanmar border kills 10 insurgents
NEW DELHI - The Indian Army said at least 10 militants were killed in an operation still underway in the troubled northeastern state of Manipur, bordering Myanmar.
The deaths came months after Reuters reported in November that Indian militant groups that sought refuge in Myanmar and fought in its civil war had begun streaming back across the border to Manipur.
"Ten cadres were neutralised and a sizeable quantity of arms and ammunition have been recovered," the army said in a post on X on Wednesday, referring to a firefight in the region.
Stability has been at risk along the shared 1,650-km (1,025-mile) border from the civil war in Myanmar after a military coup ousted an elected civilian government in February 2021.
On the Indian side, ethnic strife in Manipur since May 2023 has led to the deaths of nearly 260, with more than 60,000 displaced.
The state of 3.2 million has been divided into two ethnic enclaves, a valley controlled by the Meiteis and the Kuki-dominated hills. REUTERS

Baghaei added that there was not yet any detail regarding the date of a sixth round of nuclear talks between Iran and the U.S. Last week, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei dismissed the U.S. proposal as against the country's interests, pledging to continue enrichment. During his first term in 2018, U.S. President Donald Trump ditched a 2015 nuclear pact between Iran and six powers and reimposed sanctions that have crippled Iran's economy. Rutte is pushing for members to boost defence spending to 3.5% of GDP and commit a further 1.5% to broader security-related spending to meet U.S. President Donald Trump's demand for a 5% target. Last month, he said he assumed that target would be agreed at the summit on June 24-25. Rutte will argue in a speech at London's Chatham House think tank that for NATO to maintain credible deterrence and defence, it needs "a 400% increase in air and missile defence". "We see in Ukraine how Russia delivers terror from above, so we will strengthen the shield that protects our skies," he will say, according to extracts of his speech provided by his office.
