Colour explosion in Monte Estoril: the new Favorite People shop has arrived
There's a buzz in the usually quiet Largo Ostende, Monte Estoril. Where a discreet corner shop once stood for many years, you'll now find the new Favorite People store – lively, playful and unapologetically bold. Inside, artist Joana Astolfi's design showcases the overalls that made this 100% Portuguese brand famous, available in dozens of colours, patterns, sizes, shapes and styles. The iconic piece remains the bestseller, but there's plenty more to discover throughout the new space – which also houses the atelier and office – including shorts, skirts, trousers, jumpsuits, socks, waist bags and hats, all crafted to be passed down through generations.
Joana Astolfi nailed the 'perfect fit' in embodying the brand's values – creativity and attitude – in a physical space, says Rita Rugeroni, one of Favorite People's founders, at the store's opening event on Tuesday, June 24th. True to form, the Lisbon-based designer wasn't shy with the interior project: the L-shaped counter instantly catches the eye with its mosaic pattern in purple, yellow, green and red. The walls and window frames vary from light to deep orange; the racks displaying the clothes have wave-patterned bases; and the fitting rooms, draped in deep blue velvet curtains, feature mirrors with braided frames and red-and-blue checkered stools.
Also impossible to miss is the bathtub filled with Gorila sweets (banana, strawberry, mint and other flavours), resting on a red and purple striped rug, alongside Diana Meneses Cunha's installation of XXL lilac overalls made from clothes pegs and woollen fringes.
'More than just a retail space, the store offers an immersive experience, where the brand comes to life through a play of plinths and stairs, with striking geometries that give the space dynamism and invite exploration', Joana Astolfi explains in a statement. 'One of the project's key elements was integrating the counter with the existing pillar, transforming it into a standout sculptural piece. This feature is clad in tiles with bold colour combinations, celebrating Portuguese heritage through the ceramic tradition, reinvented with a contemporary gaze', concludes the artist.
Two sisters, one (big) idea
At the end of 2022, Rita and Madalena Rugeroni launched Favorite People, initially focusing exclusively on children's overalls like the ones they wore as little girls. The older sister was a presenter at Rádio Comercial; the younger worked at Google – and together, in just three years, they turned a small brand into a major success. The numbers are impressive. 'We grew 200% between 2023 and 2024', says Madalena, the entrepreneurial half of the duo. 'We went from a thousand to 20,000 pieces, now have six people on the team, and are stocked in over 80 retailers across five continents, in more than 25 countries including Europe, the United States, and Asia', she adds. Materials, craftsmanship, and production remain entirely Portuguese.
'Having your own business comes with many growing pains, but I fell in love with the creative freedom it offers,' says Rita, the family's creative soul, who left radio to dedicate herself fully to the brand. 'I adore the storytelling and the community we've built around Favorite People – we have ladies in their 80s telling us they feel younger and happier wearing our overalls; women who dream of becoming mothers and buy our pieces for their future children even before they have them', she explains proudly, holding up a red and pink jumpsuit, one of the latest collection's highlights – WOW (mom, mãe, upside down), inspired by the playful 1990s.
Looking ahead, the plan is simple: to keep growing. Digitally, physically, in Portugal and abroad. Or, as Madalena puts it, 'in B2B [business to business] and B2C [business to consumer]'. There may be candy floss, bubblegum, gummy bear skewers, roller skates doubling as flower vases, and overalls in every colour imaginable, but Favorite People is seriously no joke.

New Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5 single on Lanarkshire label has hallmarks of a summer anthem
Wild Flowers features Dumfries Community Choir and is unlike anything the music collective has produced before Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5 have released their first new music in four years on Coatbridge-based label Button Up Records. The new single Wild Flowers comes hot on the heels of their fantastic performance supporting legendary reggae band UB40. Wild Flowers, which features Dumfries Community Choir, has the hallmarks of a feelgood summer anthem and is quite unlike anything the music collective has produced before. Frontman, John (McAlinden) McMustard who is from Moodiesburn, explained: 'It's about appreciating the little and exciting things in life, wild flowers, summer strangers , simple pleasures and buried treasure and of course love. 'It came about from the Sunday Songwriting group I was part of a few years ago, the challenge initially was to write a haiku. So the first three lines are from the Japanese poetry tradition. I love the simplicity, five syllables, then seven syllables, then five syllables about nature and not rhyming. I think Wild Flowers has under 40 words. I love the simplicity of that. 'The message is universal and simple 'live your life for love'. Just a shame these thoughts or messages never seem to reach our politicians. 'We might be entering our classic rock phase, although next single might easily be a happy hardcore tune. 'The Dumfries Community Choir collaboration came about from Eden Fest a few years ago when I left a comment after seeing them do a brilliant 90s indie rock 'n' roll set with Bittersweet Symphony and Supergrass's Pumping on Your Stereo. They saw the comment and said they are big Colonel Mustard fans and would love to do something in the future. 'It feels like a special song and I hope the 6th Dijon Yellow Movement and folk that don't know the band feel the same way when they hear it.' Colonel Mustard & the Dijon 5 have a busy schedule over the summer playing a host of festivals and venues across the country, including Belladrum where Supergrass are also on the bill. "We're bringing out a CD EP with Wild Flowers and some B-sides on Aigust 1, which will include a new song 'Be Good To Yourself' featuring Mary Kiani to tie in with our Belladrum Festival performance," said John. They recently won over an initially sceptical crowd in Falkirk as support for UB40. 'It was brilliant,' said John. 'When we started we could see some of the older guys with their arms crossed thinking, 'who are these yellow sparkly, silly hat dafties'. 'Once we played Bouncy Ball and Cross the Road, our more ska and reggae influenced songs, you could see the heads and shoulders going and by the end and from the cheers it felt like we won over a massive new fanbase, which was a really enjoyable experience as its rare we get a big support slot. 'We're still getting lovely comments from new fans weeks later. We were really grateful for the massive opportunity.' John is particularly looking forward to watching another band perform again this summer, the first band he ever saw live – Oasis. He revealed: 'I'm taking my oldest boy John to see them in Edinburgh for his birthday, he'll be 16 , same age I was when I first saw them at Barrowland Ballroom in December 1994. 'Come to think of it maybe there's a wee Oasis vibe in the mix in Wild Flowers. The wheel has come full circle.' The band will be back at Barrowland on Sunday, August 31 performing at a fundraiser for Marie Curie and the Beatson in honour of friend John 'Soapy' Soutar who died in May this year. John added: Soapy was a true champion of underground bands including Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5, Mickey 9s, the Girobabies, Filthy Tongues and the Twistettes, as well as a member of the James fanclub. 'Each band is going to play a James cover on the night and it's going to be hosted by Still Game legend Gavin Mitchell with a DJ set by Phil Jupitus.' Garry John Kane of Button Up Records said: 'I love working with John and the band. It's a good relationship. They're also a great live band and I never get bored watching them. They're a joy.'

The Ubiquitous Chip in Glasgow to close for 'some TLC'
For the work, The Chip - as it is affectionately known - will close for around 60 days from the Saturday, July 5. The doors are scheduled to reopen in mid-September, with an enhanced visual appeal, fresh menus and extended opening hours. Will Allen, general manager at The Chip, said: 'The Chip has always been a place full of life – and over the years, that life has left its mark. This restoration is about caring for an establishment that locals and visitors to Glasgow hold dear. 'We're ensuring it's ready for the decades, generations and many more memorable moments to come within its walls. READ MORE: 'While these changes will bring fresh energy to the space, The Chip will remain instantly recognisable to those who know and love it. 'We know it's important that we keep everything that makes this place special – the atmosphere, the people, the design – and give it the love and attention it deserves to enrich its journey for the future.' Ronnie Clydesdale founded the Ubiquitous Chip in 1971 with partner Ian Brydon. Both contributed £500 to the venture; Ronnie's share was his redundancy from the Black & White whisky bond where he was a manager. Entirely self-taught, he pioneered the trend for using local, seasonal Scottish produce and was first to put the provenance of his ingredients on the menu. The restaurant was initially located in Ruthven Lane before moving to Ashton Lane in 1976. It has welcomed many famous diners and even served Princess Margaret lunch and Mick Jagger dinner on the same day. Other famous faces include Michael Keaton, Billy Connolly, Kylie Minogue, Keira Knightley and Lewis Capaldi. In 2022, it was bought over by the Metropolitan Pub Company, a subsidiary of Suffolk-based firm Greene King.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez hit with more wedding chaos in £15m nuptials
Amazon boss, Jeff Bezos, has pulled out all the stops for his lavish Venetian wedding to former journalist, Lauren Sanchez - but things haven't quite gone to plan Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez have suffered another wedding setback ahead of their eye-wateringly expensive nuptials. The Amazon boss, 61, is pulling out all the stops for the lavish bash in Venice this week, which is rumoured to have set him back a staggering $20,000 (£15m). Jeff and Lauren, 55, who arrived in Italy today, were supposed to be hosting a star-studded party at the 16th-century Scuola Grande della Misericordia as part of a multi-day celebration. However, after angry locals threatened to throw inflatable crocodiles into the canal outside the venue, they've moved the do to a fortress. But, in more bad news for the starry-eyed pair, another one of the historic venues that billionaire, Jeff, has chosen for his wedding is not looking its best - because it's covered in scaffolding. The uber glam three-day event will feature a party held at the breathtaking 15th Century Madonna dell Orto church in Venice's quaint Cannargio district tomorrow night. In preparation, security guards have now blocked off entrances where the bash will be held, but what guests will be met with when they arrive at the venue is the iconic bell tower covered in scaffolding, reports MailOnline. This has left locals wondering if mega mogul, Jeff, may have booked the venue after a quick Google image search, without realising it's actually in a state of repair. It comes after the divisive figure was forced to relocate his lavish Venice wedding celebrations after furious residents threatened to blockade the city's historic canals with inflatables. Jeff had planned to host a A-list-packed party at the 16th-century Scuola Grande della Misericordia. However, amid growing backlash from locals who accused him of 'shutting down Venice,' he has reportedly now moved the event to a more secure venue. Some protesters vowed to toss inflatable crocodiles into the canals, blocking celebrity guests from arriving by gondola or water taxi. 'This is a big victory for us,' declared Tommaso Cacciari, a member of the No Space for Bezos protest group. 'Who would have thought that we could change the plans of one of the richest men on the planet?' The wedding will now take place at the Arsenale - a vast, fortress-like complex of shipyards and warehouses once used to build Venetian warships. However, in another potential headache for Jeff and Lauren, their guestlist has reportedly been leaked after several of the bride-to-be's glam squad's name were seen on a list clutched by a tour guide welcoming the wedding party to Venice. Among the attendees are two famous make-up artists - and a drag queen tailor, who are all rumoured to be helping Lauren look her best for her big day. She's certainly going to make sure all eyes are on her - despite the scaffolding.
