Three people arrested for deadly shooting at Ekurhuleni taxi rank, police seize R5 rifles
Three people have been arrested following a deadly shooting at a taxi rank in Ekurhuleni on Thursday morning.
A security officer and a member of a taxi association were gunned down in what is believed to be linked to ongoing taxi violence.
Police said several others were injured during the attack.
Videos of the deadly shooting have been widely shared on social media.
Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said a double murder case has been opened.
'A white Fortuner vehicle with approximately 10 men inside came to the rank and started shooting at the security officers,' said Nevhuhulwi.
'Two people were shot dead during the process, of which one was identified as a security officer and the other as a member of the taxi association.'
She added that one bakkie belonging to the security officers was torched, while another vehicle was found riddled with bullet holes.
A rifle was recovered from the scene and has been seized for further investigation.
'The motive behind the shooting is suspected to be taxi violence related,' she said.
Speaking about the arrests, police said the suspects were nabbed at a warehouse in Dawnpark.
'The trio was found in possession of an R5 rifle, ammunition, and three magazines of which will be taken for ballistic testing to determine if the firearm was not used in the commission of the crime,' she said.

‘Minister, please step in': Turf war between taxis and e-hailers reignites
Taxi drivers have been accused of being a law unto themselves. The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party is appealing to the Minister of Transport to intervene in the standoff between e-hailing drivers and taxi drivers. This comes after an e-hailing driver was shot dead at Maponya Mall in Soweto on Wednesday. Another driver and a passerby were also injured in the attack. Two cars were also burnt by an unknown group of men. Although the suspects are unknown, taxi drivers have been accused of intimidating e-hailing drivers at Maponya Mall and other shopping centres around Johannesburg. 'We call on the minister of transport to take an unequivocal stand against this violence and to ensure the safety of all public transport operators, whether taxi drivers, e-hailing drivers or lift club members and the commuters they serve,' said MK party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela. Taxi industry bullying Ndhlela accused the taxi industry of being against fair competition in the transport sector. One dead, two injured after e-hailing vehicles set on fire in Maponya Mall
One person died and two others were injured after e-hailing vehicles were attacked at Maponya Mall in Soweto on Wednesday evening, police confirmed. Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said an e-hailing driver was shot and his vehicle torched while another driver and a passer-by were wounded. 'According to information at hand, an e-hailing vehicle was seen stopping at the entrance when about four men approached the driver and shot at him before torching the vehicle,' Nevhuhulwi said. 'Another vehicle which was nearby was shot at. The driver managed to flee and his vehicle was also torched. It was later discovered that the driver and a passer-by sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital.' Nevhuhulwi said the suspects are unknown and the motive behind the incident is unclear. A case of murder, attempted murder and arson has been opened for further investigation. 'The SA Police Service and Johannesburg Metro Police are on the scene to monitor the situation which is suspected to be taxi violence-related.' Gauteng transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela described the attack as 'senseless and unacceptable'. 'No grievance or commercial dispute justifies the taking of a life or putting innocent people at risk. Violence of this nature undermines public safety, tarnishes the image of our transport sector, and cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.'
