Music Review: Blackpink's Jennie steps out on her own with debut solo album, ‘Ruby'
NEW YORK (AP) — She was the first to go 'SOLO.'
Seven years ago, global pop phenomenon Jennie became the first member of the K-pop group Blackpink to release solo music. On Friday, she becomes the latest to drop a debut solo studio album, the English-language 'Ruby.' It's a kaleidoscope of different sounds for Jennie, full of incongruous, polished pleasures.
'SOLO,' her debut single, was a product of its time – nostalgic EDM-pop with pitched up whistle effects and simple, declarative lyrics. 'I'm goin' solo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo,' she repeated on the chorus. You had to believe her: She wasn't leaving her band, but a lackluster relationship, an ex so innocuous they're barely a player in the song. 'This time I'm only lookin' at me, myself and I,' she sang, 'I'ma do it on my own now.' A lot has changed in the time since, but the core of her and her band's sonic messaging — self-empowerment above all else — hasn't wavered.
On 'Ruby,' it's strongest on the singles 'Mantra,' where Jennie cheerleads in a chant-along chorus: 'Pretty girls don't do drama 'less we wanna / it'll be depending on the day' atop brassy production perfect for primetime commercial placement. Or 'ExtraL' with the innovative Doechii, whose acicular raps give additional weight to 'Yeah, we lappin' the men,' a line delivered with laughter.
But it isn't all assertions of autonomy. On the languid 'Love Hangover' with Dominic Fike, she's falling into destructive patterns with an undeserving partner; in a falsetto, her chameleonic vocal performance is so convincing, the recording almost doesn't even sound like Jennie. Or maybe it just doesn't sound like the Jennie fans have grown to known?
Across 'Ruby,' don't expect cuts that would make a Blackpink record. Prior to 'Ruby,' Jennie had only worked with one producer — Teddy Park, a man synonymous with her girl group hits. This time around, she worked with an eclectic team ranging from Diplo to El Guincho — new voices to explore different facets of her personality. It's ambitious and glossy, moving from an acoustic ballad here ('Twin'), virtuosic rapping there ('Zen'), to familiar beats on ('With the IE (Way Up)' and 'Start A War'). And it pays off.
Jennie tries her best Rihanna phrasing on the SZA-channeling 'Start A War,' and maybe spends too much time with robust collaborations — Childish Gambino and Kali Uchis on the nostalgic R&B of 'Damn Right,' Dua Lipa on 'Handlebars' that launches straight into the chorus — perfect for TikTok.
In whole, Jennie's 'Ruby' is a solid re-introduction to the Blackpink superstar. The songs are strong and diverse and nostalgic — but maybe not wholly distinctive. It is still a reason to be excited for her future solo work.

Over the past two-ish years, BLINKs have definitely missed seeing their favorite lovesick girls together. But this summer, the ladies of BLACKPINK will finally be a unit once more, with ROSÉ, LISA, JENNIE and JISOO set to return with a world tour and new music after taking time off to pursue solo projects. Though details of just how and when it would happen remained hazy for many months during their time apart, it was finally announced in February that BLACKPINK would hit the road as a band for the first time since 2022-2023's Born Pink World Tour, embarking on a run of stadium dates kicking off July 5 in Goyang, South Korea. As that first show has gotten closer, a couple of the women have also dropped hints about new music in the works, with the K-pop girl group last releasing an album — Billboard 200-topper Born Pink — in October 2022. But, despite their eagerness to get back together, the BLACKPINK members have also talked about how important it was for each of them to take time for themselves. During which, ROSÉ, LISA and JENNIE all released debut solo albums — Rosie, Alter Ego and Ruby, respectively — each climbing to the top 10 of the Billboard 200, while JISOO dropped a solo EP titled Amortage and focused on acting projects. As a result, each member has something new to bring to their group dynamic, and fans will finally get to see that in action very soon. In her Billboard cover story, Lisa told writer Nolan Feeney that she's basically counting down the days until she gets to work with her bandmates again. 'I can't wait,' she said at the time. 'We know each other so well and know how much energy we have to put into every single project,' she continued. 'So we want to support and say, 'You did really well!' Like, JENNIE and Rosie just released their own songs, and we're on texts, we're on FaceTime. They're like family. I'm just so happy that they're releasing something. This is what we all wanted to do, so I just wanted to say that I really do love their songs.' What to know about fatal shooting of 'King of the Hill' actor Jonathan Joss as co-stars pay tribute
HOUSTON (AP) — While it remains unclear what prompted the fatal shooting of Jonathan Joss, a Native American voice actor best known for his work on the animated television series 'King of the Hill,' police say they are looking into whether his sexual orientation played a role in his death. Joss' husband has claimed the person who killed the actor yelled 'violent homophobic slurs' before opening fire. Initially, San Antonio police said they found 'no evidence whatsoever to indicate that Mr. Joss' murder was related to his sexual orientation.' But on Thursday, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus walked back that statement, saying it had been made prematurely and whether Joss' sexual orientation played a role in the shooting 'is part of the investigation.' Since Joss' killing, friends, actors Joss worked with and fans have honored the actor's memory with tributes and fond remembrances. Here's what to know about Joss, his career and his shooting: Who was Joss? Joss, 59, grew up in San Antonio and graduated from the communications and theater program at Our Lady of the Lake University in 1990. Joss was best known as the voice of John Redcorn, a Native American character on the popular 'King of the Hill' animated series, which ran for 13 seasons from 1997 to 2008. A reboot of the show, which Joss had already worked on, is set to start in August. Joss also had a recurring role on the television show 'Parks and Recreation,' playing Chief Ken Hotate. He appeared in two episodes of the series 'Tulsa King' in 2022. What was happening with Joss in the months before his death? Joss' childhood home, where he still lived, burned down in January. He lost all his belongings, and his three dogs were killed in the blaze. A GoFundMe account had been set up to help Joss and his husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, get back on their feet. 'We may have lost our home, but not our hope. We're moving forward with love, humor, and a little elbow grease … and we're incredibly grateful for every ounce of support,' Joss said in a May 14 Facebook post in which he indicated he was in Los Angeles looking for a new home. By the end of May, Joss was back in Texas, and on Saturday, he took part in a live music performance in Austin, located about 80 miles (130 kilometers) northeast of San Antonio. Who is accused of fatally shooting Joss? Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez, 56, is accused by police of confronting Joss and his husband as they were checking their mail at the burned-down home Sunday night. In a statement, de Gonzales alleged that when Ceja Alvarez opened fire, Joss pushed his husband out of the way and saved his life. Ceja Alvarez was charged with murder. He is free on a $200,000 bond. Ceja Alvarez's attorney, Alfonso Otero, asked the public to withhold judgment in the case until all the evidence is reviewed by prosecutors. 'Mr. Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez maintains his innocence and categorically denies any accusations and statements made against him by individuals and the media. We have confidence and trust that the judicial process will be fair to all parties involved and request everyone to respect Mr. Ceja and his family's right to privacy and his constitutional right to a fair trial,' Otero said in a statement released late Friday. Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said it was premature to decide if Joss' shooting was a hate crime, which under Texas law would be handled — if there's a conviction — as an enhancement during sentencing and not as a separate charge. 'We'll certainly keep our options open when the case is filed with us ... I'm not closing the door on the possibility of alleging hate crime as an enhancement in this case," Gonzales said during a news conference on Thursday. Robert Rios, a friend of Joss', told TV station KSAT that Joss and Ceja Alvarez were neighbors and the two had argued for years. McManus said police had been called to Joss' home and his neighborhood about 70 times over the past two years related to 'neighborhood type disturbances" and that sometimes Joss made those calls and at other times neighbors had called to report Joss. How is Joss being remembered by friends, actors? Actor Chris Pratt, who worked with Joss on 'Parks and Recreation,' fondly remembered the actor in an Instagram story on Monday. In a Facebook post, San Antonio-based Our Lady of the Lake University, Joss' alma mater, called him 'a trailblazer in his field.
