'Immersive experience' tells story of Bradford's mill history
Unspun Stories by Shipley based 509 Arts mixes projections of mills, machinery and textiles from Bradford's past with words from the people who worked the city's mills.
These images and words are interspersed with music and sound effects in the darkened basement space of Loading Bay – a new venue that is hosting dozens of City of Culture events in 2025.

From work conditions to mill fires, people who worked in the industry that defined Bradford for generations told their stories to the arts group, who then created the work to record a significant part of local history.

It is part of 509 Arts Lost Mills and Ghost Mansions project, a study that looks at the mill industry from the 1970s onwards – a time when it went into steep decline.

The event is free and runs from noon until 6pm each day until Sunday
On Saturday (29) and Sunday (30) parts of the soundtrack will be performed live in the installation.
Two brass musicians from the City of Bradford Brass Band and the composer, Nick Lewis, will bring an added musical dimension to the immersive experience of Unspun Stories at 3pm, 4pm and 5:30pm on both days.

Rick Ross has one of the largest pools in the country. Life is going swimmingly for the hip-hop legend
Rick Ross often divides his time between his mansions in Atlanta and Miami. So, where does the rapper and entrepreneur prefer relaxing most? 'Swimming pools in Atlanta,' Ross told CNN during a recent interview, smiling. 'The ocean, the beach in Miami.' He knows a thing or two about pools, it turns out. Ross' expansive estate of more than 300 acres outside of Atlanta – which he named The Promise Land – features one of the largest residential pools in the country. It holds 350,000 gallons of water and requires a crew of four from Georgia Plaster and Tile to maintain it. And it's not just for show. 'I use it. I swim every summer,' said Ross, who also sometimes uses the pool as part of his morning meditations. 'I love being in the water, you know. I'm (an) Aquarius. Shout out all the Aquariuses.' The luxe pool is also a source of revenue. Ross has rented out his estate and pool for films such as 2018's 'Superfly' and the sequel to 'Coming to America,' which was released in 2021. He also opens his home up annually for a car show as well as a pool party because he believes that showing off his success is a way to let younger generations know that with hard work and determination, the sky is the limit. Ross, who acts as the chief executive officer of Maybach Music Group (MMG), has extended his portfolio well beyond music as a franchise owner of multiple Wingstop restaurant locations, a partnership with Luc Belaire sparkling wine as well as an interest in Rap Snacks, to name just a few side hustles. 'To me what's most beautiful about it is I believe I could help translate that story to the younger ones,' he said. Ever the gregarious host, Ross popped bottles of Belaire, posed for photos and generally made people feel welcomed in The Promise Land. Brad Baker drove three hours from Greenville, South Carolina, for the pool party. Baker has attended for the past few years, and said it's a vibe being able to party with Ross. 'He's just positive, you know? It's just positive energy,' Baker said. 'It's just nothing that he could say that would make you feel like, 'Oh man, I don't like that cat.' He's all about making your money and he shows you how to get money.' The pool, which Ross jokingly christened 'Wet Wet' when prompted, also helps make that money in the form of inspiration for some of his music. 'That's the ghost writer. That's Wet Wet aka the ghost writer,' the Grammy-nominated rapper said, laughing. 'There's no way you gonna come out here and not be inspired.' Dripping wet with inspiration, in fact.

Light festival to return to Bradford this winter
A LIGHT festival that has attracted tens of thousands of people to Bradford will return this winter. And local artists can apply for funding to help create the illuminated masterpieces as part of the two day event. BD: is LiT launched in 2021, and comes to the city centre every two years. This year's event coincides with Bradford's year as City of Culture and will run on November 7 and 8. Since 2021, BD: is LiT has welcomed over 50,000 people to the various installations across the district. A previous installation at BD: is LiT (Image: T&A) Previous festivals have seen City Hall and the Wool Exchange become the canvas for huge light shows, a recreation of Aurora Borealis in City Park and huge light installations across the city. Bradford Council, in partnership with Bradford 2025, is now reaching out to local artists to fund the creation of innovative new light art projects and installations for the festival. A previous installation at BD: is LiT (Image: T&A) As part of this year's BD: is LiT, a range of artists are invited to respond to the theme of 'The Colour of Light' to develop projects that are unique to Bradford and with national relevance. There are three or four commissions available, each worth between £5,000 to £7,500, to light up our new public realm work within the city. Innovative ideas of how the new look of Bradford city centre can be celebrated are being sought. A previous installation at BD: is LiT (Image: T&A) It is hoped that applications will feature a range of projects that include other partners, local communities and unique ways of celebrating the rich arts, culture, architecture, and heritage of the Bradford District. Projects may be new or already in development, but they must be ready to be displayed at this year's BD: is LiT on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 November. The project could go on to tour after BD: is LiT or be a one-off installation. The funding is only available for people who work or live in Bradford. Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council's Executive Member for Healthy People said: 'I know that our local artists are best placed to respond to this call out. 'They have been amazing this year. Through this funding opportunity we hope to support a range of projects that are interactive, fun, playful or something beautiful that can be viewed by a range of audiences.'
