Renault discounts its EV range to avoid tax hikes
With the government's Expensive Car Supplement hitting cars priced above £40,000, the Renault Scenic Techno Long Range model that was priced at £40,995 now costs £37,195, while the new Techno Esprit Alpine Long Range model with sportier styling also comes in under £40,000 at £39,930, although anything other than standard paint is likely to push that car back into the Expensive Car Supplement bracket.
The Scenic appears now only to be available with the longer-range battery with an impressive maximum claimed range of up to 379 miles. The previous Comfort Range model using the same battery as the Megane has been dropped.
The smaller Megane model now starts at £32,495 – a drop of £1,500, while the range-topping car, now in Iconic Esprit Alpine trim, costs £1,000 less at £36,995.
Both the Megane and the Scenic now come in a simplified range – although the names couldn't be much longer. They both start in simple but well-equipped Techno trim, followed by new sportier Techno Esprit Alpine models and then Iconic Esprit Alpine cars at the top of both ranges.
In addition to the new line-up, there are a host of other upgrades across both models that include full one-pedal driving that enables the cars to come to a complete stop smoothly when the driver lifts off the accelerator. Renault says that it delivers a smoother overall driving experience and maximises energy being recuperated through braking, while also reducing brake pad wear.
Both the Megane and the Scenic will also come with a vehicle-to-load (V2L) adaptor that lets you plug anything with a three-pin plug into the car, while Renault's Plug & Charge tech has also become standard on all new Scenic and Megane models. Plug & Charge enables a seamless digital handshake between car and selected public chargers to automatically authorise payment and start charging without the need to use an app or payment cards.
Esprit Alpine models also get a new face ID feature that will automatically set the driver profile and seating position by recognising who's sitting in the driving seat, while the rear-view camera quality has also been improved. The rear LED lighting signature on the Megane has also been updated.
Order books for the revised Megane and Scenic ranges are expected to open at the end of April, with first deliveries following on a month or so later.

First look at new £17k Renault Twingo as prototypes hit the road
The fourth-generation Twingo will arrive in mid-2026 as the new, sub-£17,000 entry point to Renault's expanding EV lineup and a direct rival to the upcoming Volkswagen ID 1. Spotted testing for the first time by Autocar spy photographers, the new city car will be launched seven years after its petrol predecessor was withdrawn from sale in the UK due to declining demand (just 877 UK sales in 2018). The new Twingo marks another significant step in Renault's EV advance and comes off the back of the successful Renault 5, which has carved a path for smaller, affordable EVs. A key selling point for the Twingo will be its sub-£17,000 starting price, which is part of a brief to create a 'fit-for-purpose urban vehicle with no compromise'. Notably, this undercuts the old Twingo Electric's starting price of €21,350 (£18,624) in 2021. This variant was introduced during the model's third generation but never sold in the UK. Its pricing will position it just above the £14,995 Dacia Spring and £15,995 Leapmotor T03 – the two cheapest electric cars on sale in the UK today – in a growing A-segment that will later be supplemented by the ID 1, Kia EV1 and a Nissan-badged variant of the Twingo. Renault will look to distinguish the Twingo from its rivals with a funky design – and our first sight of test mules reveals that the production car doesn't differ too much from the radical concept of 2024, which was inspired by the Mk1 Twingo of 1992. The car's look retains a similar bubble-like shape to the concept's, while under the camouflage, it appears to feature the same semicircular light design at the front and rear.

Full list of electric cars eligible for new UK Government grant of £1,500
Some electric cars have been approved for a discount under a new taxpayer-funded drive to accelerate the switch to EVs. The Department for Transport (DfT) has confirmed 13 more electric car models are now eligible for new UK Government grants. Drivers can save £1,500 with the purchase of certain Nissan, Renault and Vauxhall models. The discount will be automatically applied at the point of sale. Four Citroen cars were announced as the first grant-eligible models last week with more models expected to be approved in the coming weeks as manufacturers' applications are assessed against sustainability standards. The new £650 million electric car grant scheme enables motorists purchasing some new electric cars costing up to £37,000 to save either £1,500 or £3,750, depending on the vehicle's green credentials. All models announced so far are eligible for grants of £1,500. Car models eligible for £1,500 electric car grant Citroen: e-C3, e-C4, e-C5 and e-Berlingo. Renault: Alpine A290, Megane, 4, 5 and Scenic. The DfT has previously said many drivers cite upfront costs as a 'key barrier' to buying an EV and the grant will bring down prices so they 'more closely match their petrol and diesel counterparts'. However, shadow transport secretary Richard Holden said: 'Labour ministers' decision to hand £650 million of taxpayers' money to foreign car companies, for cars made in foreign countries, is deranged. 'This latest mess with a confused rollout and botched incentives is only making things worse. 'Labour has put ideological obsession ahead of hard pressed taxpayers, who are staring down the barrel of billions in tax rises to come after Labour's disastrous massive tax hike budget last year that has already seen over 100,000 people join the dole queue. 'Labour's heavy-handed meddling is damaging confidence, placing British jobs at risk, and putting the brakes on competition. 'Consumers and the market should be trusted to drive the transition to cleaner technologies, not this clueless Government.' RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: 'Another wave of cars qualifying for the Government's revamped electric car grant is yet more welcome news. 'It's also very positive to see other manufacturers that don't meet the grant's green production targets lowering their prices. 'Those looking to make the switch now have a wider choice of better-value vehicles than ever before. This can only help speed up the transition to electric motoring.' Online vehicle marketplace Auto Trader said it has seen a spike in interest for electric cars since the grant was announced, with interest in some brands trebling. James Taylor, managing director of Nissan Motor GB, said the announcement that its models will be eligible is 'an exciting step in the UK's electrification journey'. Steve Catlin, his counterpart at Vauxhall, said the manufacturer has been 'committed to electrifying Britain for years'. Under the Government's zero emission vehicle (Zev) mandate, at least 28 per cent of new cars sold by each manufacturer in the UK this year must be zero emission, which generally means pure electric. Across all manufacturers, the figure during the first half of the year was 21.6 per cent. Colin Walker, head of transport at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit think tank, warned that the impact of the electric car grant scheme could be 'undermined' by recent changes to the Zev mandate which mean it will be easier for manufacturers who do not meet the targets to avoid fines. He added that this risks 'driving down EV sales'. The UK Government has pledged to ban the sale of new fully petrol and diesel cars and vans from 2030.

Having said that, a sub-eight-second 0-62mph acceleration time isn't to be sniffed at, while the Scenic boasts a comfortable ride, and generally a very easy-going driving experience.
