Oil Futures' Rare ‘Smile' Fascinates Morgan Stanley as Glut Seen

Bloomberg29-04-2025

The global oil market is in very rare territory right now, with a pricing pattern that points to near-term tightness for crude while also flagging a 'meaningful surplus' further out, according to Morgan Stanley.
'The Brent forward curve has an unusual shape at the moment: downward sloping across the first nine contracts and upward sloping thereafter,' analysts including Martijn Rats and Charlotte Firkins said in a note. 'This is so unusual that, in fact, there is little historical precedent,' they said.

Morgan Stanley lifts XPeng target after G7 launch draws early interest

-- Morgan Stanley raised its price target on XPeng Inc (NYSE:XPEV) following the launch of its G7 sport utility vehicle, which drew over 10,000 pre-sale orders within an hour. The brokerage increased its target to $28 from $25 for the U.S.-listed shares, and to HK$108 from HK$96 in Hong Kong. XPeng shares have risen more than 70% this year, outperforming the broader market. The G7 is XPeng's first model equipped with its in-house 'Turing' AI chips, supporting Level 3 assisted-driving features. The vehicle includes an augmented reality head-up display co-developed with Huawei, and fast-charging capabilities standard across all versions.'While constant competition risk and YTD stock outperformance may aggravate near-term volatility, we stay constructive on XPeng's model pipeline and AI-related initiatives,' analyst at Morgan Stanley added. Morgan Stanley expects monthly G7 sales to reach 6,000 to 8,000 units, similar to peak volumes for XPeng's G6 and G9 models. It raised its 2025 to 2027 delivery forecasts by 5% to 8%, citing what it described as encouraging early demand for the G7 and the Mona Max, another upcoming model. XPeng now aims to reach profitability by 2026, a year earlier than previously forecast. While the brokerage remains positive on XPeng's product roadmap, it flagged the potential for near-term volatility following the stock's sharp rally. The firm said the G7 launch had been a key catalyst, and that investor focus would shift to pricing details and delivery ramp-up ahead of a planned hybrid model later this year. 'Given that the G7 pre-sale orders, sales momentum over the following weekend, conversion, and delivery ramp-up in July will be key to underpinning further share price upside after it unveils the official price,' analyst added. C Projects Higher Q2 IB & Markets Revenues: Fee Income to Benefit?

Despite tariff-related headwinds, Citigroup C expects the performance of its Markets and Banking segments to improve in the second quarter of 2025. This was disclosed by Viswas Raghavan, head of Banking, at Morgan Stanley US Financials, Payments & CRE Conference on trading desks have been busy in the second quarter, with equities and fixed-income recording strong momentum. The bank projects markets revenues to grow in the mid-to-high single digits range on a year-over-year basis. Further, investment banking (IB) revenues are expected to increase by a mid-single-digit percentage. Raghavan noted that market activity came to a standstill in April due to ambiguity over the final tariff decision, but transaction volumes have since recovered alongside a stock market rebound. He added that merger & acquisition (M&A) activity remains strong with active deal discussions, and debt markets are expected to follow through with acquisition financing. Some IPOs, mainly in tech and digital assets, have returned, but the overall market remains sluggish, especially for tariff-affected Citigroup expects the cost of credit to be 'up a few hundred million' sequentially, driven by higher credit reserve build. As IB and markets revenues improve this quarter and optimism over deal-making activities continues, Citigroup is expected to witness a rise in fee income. The non-interest revenues constitute almost 33% of the company's total revenues. Citigroup is not the only one that is optimistic about the IB business prospects. At the same conference, Morgan Stanley MS CEO Ted Pick stated that deal-making and equity capital market activity are gaining momentum, with deal discussions remaining resilient and even accelerating in certain sectors. Further, Morgan Stanley is expected to end the second quarter on a solid note. Likewise, Moelis & Company's MC incoming CEO Navid Mahmoodzadegan told investors that the deal-making environment is rebounding, with confidence returning after a temporary pause in April due to U.S. tariff concerns. He further noted that Moelis & Company's deal pipeline is up from April and is as high as "it's ever been at the firm, or close to it.' Shares of Citigroup have gained 11.3% this year. Morgan Stanley has jumped 4.8% but Moelis & Company declined 21.5% in the same time frame.
