Car prices will go up. Taking the train or a bus looks like a bargain

President Donald Trump's auto tariffs are expected to lift car prices by thousands of dollars. That's an opportunity for America's trains and buses.
Public transit advocates hope soaring car costs will push more people to the US transit system and spur government investment to improve service. Trump's 25% tariffs on all cars shipped to the United States are likely to pile costs on to the already steep financial burdens of driving, and consumers can save thousands of dollars annually by switching to transit.
'We think that there's an opportunity for transit to present itself as a viable option,' said Paul Skoutelas, the CEO of the American Public Transportation Association.
Transportation costs are consumers' second largest expense behind housing, accounting for 15% of average spending, in large part due to the costs of driving and maintaining a car. These costs hit lower-income households the hardest. Lower-income Americans spending roughly 30% of their income on transportation, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Many Americans are struggling with these costs, and delinquencies on auto loans hit their highest rate in more than 30 years, Fitch Ratings said last month.
Car costs that would rise even higher from tariffs 'give people additional reason to consider a good transit alternative,' Skoutelas said. In 2023, his group calculated that Americans could save more than $13,000 a year by using public transit instead of driving.
Tariffs will raise the price of the cheapest American cars by an additional $2,500 to $5,000 and up to $20,000 more for some imported models, according to Anderson Economic Group. That translates to a 13.5% average increase overall on car prices, the Yale Budget Lab said.
Some consumers have been rushing to dealerships to buy vehicles before price increases hit.
Price increases from tariffs may not change wealthier families' decisions to purchase a new car. But the added cost may change the calculus for low-income households already stretched on their car payments or push younger, first-time buyers to delay purchases, said Nicholas Bloom, a professor of urban policy and planning at Hunter College and the author of 'The Great American Transit Disaster.'
A boost for public transit would also benefit the environment. The transportation sector is the largest source of greenhouse emissions in the United States, accounting for over 28% of the total in 2022.
Buses and trains can reduce emissions by up to two-thirds per passenger compared to private cars.
It wouldn't be the first time in history that an economic shock pushed people to mass transit, Bloom said.
These patterns have been temporary, however, because US policy has historically prioritized building roads, highways, bridges and sprawling suburbs, often at the expense of funding transit, he said. About 87% of daily trips in the United States take place in cars, according to the Department of Transportation.
During World War II, the government halted the manufacturing of civilian cars and rationed the vehicles that were left for sale, compelling Americans to take mass transit in record numbers. But transit ridership collapsed after the war as millions of Americans left cities for new suburbs created by federal policies, which paid for the construction of highways and roads, and subsidized mass homeownership in the suburbs.
The energy crisis during the 1970s also pushed more people to carpool and use mass transit. But while European countries responded to the crisis by investing in public transit and pedestrian-friendly policies, the United States continued to focus on roadbuilding.
Higher gas prices also typically lead to an increase in transit ridership. Every 10% jump in gas prices can lead to as much as a 4% increase in bus ridership and an 8% increase for rail, a 2011 study found.
For example, in 2022, Russia's invasion of Ukraine sent gas prices soaring, giving transit a ridership bump — ridership increased 3% in New York City during the week after the invasion, 4% in Washington D.C. and 7% in San Francisco.
Public transit agencies could use the boost. Fares are a critical source of funding for transit agencies, particularly the largest transit systems in the United States.
Ridership still remains sluggish in many cities even five years after people shifted to working from home during the pandemic. Ridership is at about 85% of pre-pandemic levels nationwide, and transit agency budget shortfalls in Chicago and other cities around the country threaten service cuts, layoffs and fare hikes.
But higher car prices won't increase public transit ridership in areas with little or no mass transit options. For transit to be a viable alternative to driving, localities, states and the federal government must increase investments in frequent and reliable transit service, advocates say.
'Most American cities don't have great transit systems. That's because we don't invest in it,' said Midori Valdivia, a transit consultant and a board member of the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority. 'Governments have not provided choices — taking a car feels like the only choice.'
About two-thirds of transit agencies' revenue comes from government, and most of that is state and local government. The federal government spends much more on roads than transit: Eighty percent of the federal gas tax, which helps fund infrastructure projects, is devoted to roads. Twenty percent goes to transit.
The Trump administration's Department of Transportation has been hostile to major transit initiatives in New York and California, revoking approval of New York City's congestion pricing program and announcing a review of California's high-speed rail project.
And Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the administration would prioritize projects and goals that 'give preference to communities with marriage and birth rates higher than the national average.' This would mean fewer funds for urban areas with higher transit use, according to an analysis by the Urban Institute.
'If we're pulling transit funding and increasing the cost of cars, that's more pain for families and leaving people in a lurch,' said Ben Furnas, the executive director of Transportation Alternatives, a transit advocacy group.
As the White House pulls back on mass transit, advocates are turning their attention to ballot box initiatives to fund mass transit.
In 2024, voters passed 46 of 53 ballot measures for funding public transit, providing $25 billion for projects like electrifying bus fleets, expanding service hours, subsidizing fares for low-income riders and other initiatives. Ballot measures to fund transit in San Francisco and Charlotte are being planned for this year and next.
'If there is an opportunity to invest in transit, that's what Americans want,' Valdivia said.

Across the street, storefronts were covered in anti-U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement graffiti. 'I think people have the right idea, just the wrong approach,' Melendrez said as cars whisked by him, some honking in appreciation or stopping to ask questions about the night before. 'Everybody has their own way of coping with stuff, and if nobody is there to help manage their feelings this is what can tend to happen. You need some community support.' Melendrez, his wife and daughter cleaned the streets that were obscured just hours earlier by huge clouds of tear gas fired by federal authorities. She looked around at the local businesses that had been damaged, and shook her head. 'The destruction of people's hard work. This is how these people, their families, take care of themselves. And the destruction of that is not going to help your case.' Given the breadth of the damage, neighbors said they were angry they were being left to clean up the mess. Melendrez's daughter, Elaina Angel, grew up in Compton and said she wasn't surprised. But it still left her feeling frustrated to see the Home Depot already reopened while her streets and local businesses were still marred by trash and graffiti. 'They don't care about Compton,' she said through her mask, stopping to cough from the irritation. She meant political leaders, law enforcement authorities and others who were nowhere to be seen Sunday morning. 'But I don't think they were counting on us to come out and clean it up.'

"But there have been a lot of false stories about Medicare being on the table, and it's totally not on the table." Senate Republicans this week are working on the House-passed budget bill, dubbed the "One Big Beautiful Bill" by President Trump, which includes deep tax cuts, border security measures, and changes to Medicaid and food assistance programs. Hassett on Sunday pushed back against the idea that Republicans are targeting Medicare for cuts. "I've seen a massive amount of waste, fraud and abuse in Medicaid, and I've not been briefed on Medicare waste, fraud and abuse. But if they find something then, of course, we would look at it," he said. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated earlier this week that the bill will add $2.4 trillion to the national debt over the next decade. Sen. Thom Tillis told Charlotte's WCNC on Thursday that he supports legislation that would address waste in the Medicare Advantage Program. This addition, he said, would not touch beneficiaries but would focus on "eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse of the Medicare Advantage program, including costly government overpayments to insurance companies." To pay for some of Mr. Trump's tax reforms, such as extending his 2017 tax cuts and eliminating tax on tips, there are cuts to several programs. Republicans have insisted they are not cutting Medicaid, and reductions in the low-income entitlement program have become one of the most charged parts of the bill. In a closed-door session with members of the Republican conference days before the bill's passage, sources in the room told CBS News Mr. Trump said, "Don't f*** around with Medicaid." House Republicans passed the bill late last month on a 215–214 vote, sending it to the Senate where GOP leaders are weighing revisions to secure enough votes under budget reconciliation rules. "What we want to see done now is we want the Senate to pass the bill, and then we want the House and Senate to work out their differences," Hassett said. "So right now, the Senate has to get the votes they need to pass the bill, and we're supporting them in that process." Some Republican senators, including Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Josh Hawley of Missouri, have voiced concerns about Medicaid provisions in the bill, particularly new monthly premium requirements for low-income recipients. Their opposition highlights ongoing uncertainty as Senate GOP leaders work to secure enough votes. The bill can't afford to lose more than four votes in the Senate, granted that all Democrats vote against it. Hawley has called the Medicaid work requirements "both morally wrong and politically suicidal." When asked about Hawley's concerns, Hassett said, "I'd have to go see what he has and talk to him about it. And I also would want to talk to the president about the specific matter. So I can't speak to that one." The administration has repeatedly argued that failure to pass the legislation could hurt the broader economy. "If we don't pass this bill, then we lose 6 to 7 million jobs and 4% GDP," Hassett said Sunday. "If we create the jobs that we have in the bill, then we're going to create a heck of a lot more insurance than what we're talking about in waste, fraud and abuse." Senate Republicans are expected to release their version of the bill in the coming days. If there are significant changes, it will then have to go back to the House for final passage before landing on Mr. Trump's desk.

The average consumer, therefore, may find the most popular or go-to brand changes based on the style they want, whether it's a classic push mower or a more advanced zero-turn riding mower. Alongside its long-standing reputation for quality, the brand has situated itself directly on the line between commercial and residential use. A professional pedigree bolsters its residential brand, elevating it in the eyes of homeowners. Emphasizing the point, John Deere exited the push mower market in 2012. Its focus turned to the riding mower market, arguably the dominant mower segment and the bridge between the homeowner and lawn care expert. John Deere is also one of the top three American manufacturers, with over 1,000 employees working out of its Horicon, Wisconsin location. Homeowners agree that John Deere, maker of some of the highest-reviewed riding lawn mowers under $3,000, is one of the most reliable lawn care brands. According to a 2025 GreenPals survey, 9.7% of voters identified the Z300 as their favorite mower. The Scag Liberty Z was the only alternative to match it, sharing the top spot among zero-turn options. Polaris Market Research, meanwhile, noted John Deere was the top brand driving lawn mower growth. The report cited the Deere brand's durability, performance, and overall customer satisfaction as key factors in its popularity. Though thriving on tradition, John Deere is nevertheless geared toward the future. With the rapid rise in popularity of battery-powered alternatives, the company released its first all-electric model in the residential zero-turn Z370R. Push mowers are still wildly popular due to low initial cost and practicality for smaller yards. In this category, a mix of age-old brands and up-and-comers are making their mark. Names like Green Machine, Ego, and Ryobi offer some of the best battery-powered lawn mowers. Still, gas remains the most popular power option, owning roughly 40% of the market. Companies such as Stanley Black & Decker, owner of Craftsman, Cub Cadet, and Troy-Bilt, enjoy the success of multiple brands that have made them leaders in a tight market. Meanwhile, Toro lawn mowers make the cut needing only their four-letter brand to lead in sales and popular opinion. Founded in 1914, Toro proudly proclaims itself as "America's #1 Walk Mower Brand." Its Bloomington, Minnesota facility is one of the five largest manufacturing operations in the nation. Sales in 2024 put it second behind Deere & Co. and well ahead of third-place Husqvarna, according to IBISWorld. Polaris Market Research lists the brand as the fourth most influential growth driver in the market. As they explain, Toro's recent investment in zero-turn and robotic products have set them up for future success as a brand centered on versatility and user-friendliness. Indeed, the company invested in a state-of-the-art camera-based navigation system for its robotic mowers in 2022. Staying true to tradition, though, Toro is a standard-setter in gas push mowers, particularly in its highly-rated Recycler models. TechGearLab ranked the Toro SmartStow Recycler as the best overall among tested mowers.
