Grealish joins Everton on loan from Man City in bid to reignite his career
The 29-year-old Grealish, one of the poster boys of English soccer, became the country's most expensive player after a 2021 move from Aston Villa to City for 100 million pounds (then $139 million). He was a regular pick in City's historic 2022-23 season when the team won the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup.
However, Grealish has fallen out of favor over the last two seasons, not even making City's squad for the recent Club World Cup, and has chosen to move to Everton for a season ahead of the 2026 World Cup in North America.
'I'm over the moon to have signed for Everton — it's massive for me, honestly,' Grealish said of a team without a major trophy since 1995. 'This is a great club, with great fans."
The loan switch removes not only a high-earner from City's wage bill but also one of the many attacking midfielders built up in City's stacked squad.
Grealish often had a free, roaming role when making his name at Villa, but had to be more disciplined and restricted as a left-sided forward in City manager Pep Guardiola's system of play.
Everton manager David Moyes will try to get the best out of Grealish again, with the team's first match of the Premier League season at Leeds on Monday. Everton's first game at its new 53,000-seat waterfront home at Bramley-Moore Dock is a week later against Brighton.
'As soon as I spoke to the manager, I knew there was only one place that I wanted to go,' Grealish said.
Grealish has swapped a likely title-contending team for one expected to be midtable at best this season.
'It was a very strange decision for him, but you can see why: Because he wants to get into the national team,' former England international Steve McManaman said at an ESPN news conference in New York.
Number 18
Grealish said he spoke to former Everton player Wayne Rooney before agreeing to the move and will wear the same number — 18 — on the back of his jersey.
'There were other numbers but my two favorite English players ever are Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne and I know they both wore No. 18 here," Grealish said.
'So, as soon as I knew this deal was close, I had a look and No. 18 was free, so that was perfect for me and it was the only number I was going to take from that point."

Bryce Harper spoiled the Reds' shutout bid with a two-out homer, his 18th, off Sam Moll during a downpour in the ninth inning. Ranger Suárez (8-6) gave up a season-high 10 hits and six runs over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out three and walked two. Key moment Rafael Marchán singled and Trea Turner doubled him to third with two outs in the sixth. Kyle Schwarber, who came in tied with the Dodgers Shohei Ohtani for the NL home run lead with 42, grounded out to end the threat. The Reds had 10 hits and their six runs were the second-most the team has scored in August. They've scored 39 runs in 11 August games, 20 coming in two contests. Ohio State ranking in AP poll not as high as Coaches
Just a week after the US LBM preseason Coaches Poll was released, the Associated Press has followed suit. And while Ohio State was behind just one team in the Coaches Poll at No. 2, it appears below another team in the AP. The Texas Longhorns are the No. 1 team in both polls, but instead of OSU at No. 2, it slipped below Penn State to No. 3 in the AP Preseason poll. The Buckeyes did receive 11 first-place votes, but it wasn't quite enough to surpass the Nittany Lions. While Ohio State is the defending College Football Playoff national champion, there are a lot of question marks. OSU will be breaking in a new quarterback, will have to replace two 1,000-yard rushers in the backfield, and must find answers for multiple spots on the defense. Still, the thought is that there is enough talent to reload and absorb the 15 starters now off to the NFL, namely because OSU still has perhaps the two best players in college football with the return of safety Caleb Downs and superstar receiver Jeremiah Smith. But ... time will tell. Behind Ohio State and rounding out the top ten in the preseason AP Poll are Clemson (4), Georgia (5), Notre Dame (6), Oregon (7), Alabama (8), LSU (9), and Miami (FL) (10). Texas, Penn State, OSU, Georgia, Notre Dame, and Oregon received at least one first-place vote. As always, preseason rankings mean very little, but it's still interesting to see where the media believes the pecking order is, with Ohio State still thought of very highly.
