Modern tech changing lives but be careful of its misuse, says Prez
Highlighting the rising academic performance of girl students – who topped 21 of 27 departments in the varsity this year – she said, 'Over the last five years, girl students have consistently outperformed boys in academics at the institute. At the post-graduate level, the number of girl students who topped was more than three-and-a-half times that of the boys. This reflects India was moving from women empowerment to women-led development.'
She also expressed satisfaction over the university's steady increase in enrolment of tribal students, underprivileged and 'divyang' students. Calling upon the graduating students to be more sincere and hardworking in future, Murmu said: 'From today onwards, your life will take a new turn. You will move out of the academic university and step into a bigger university of life and society. I hope you will also achieve success and laurels in university life and society.'
The President said the educational institution was an active centre of the freedom struggle, and associated with the movement for the formation of the State of Odisha. She also stressed the importance of entrepreneurship and societal contribution by not only getting a job, but providing jobs to others as well.
'If you desire, you can become entrepreneurs and set up your own ventures,' Murmu told the students. 'The sense of nation first is our biggest strength. Our soldiers, farmers, scientists, engineers, doctors and people active in various fields are working with the sentiment of increasing the pride of India,' she said.
During the occasion, Murmu also conferred honorary degrees on four noted personalities in recognition of their contributions to different fields. Later, she laid the foundation stone for the redevelopment of three buildings of Ravenshaw Girls' High School in Cuttack.
On Monday, addressing the 5th convocation of AIIMS-Bhubaneswar, President Murmu said depression and obesity were becoming a matter of concern. She said apart from medicine, awareness is also necessary to treat depression.
'A lifestyle change can provide mental peace. Yoga and pranayama could be helpful in mental health,' she said, urging doctors to make people aware of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Murmu said obesity, a lifestyle disease, is also a matter of concern.
Noting that AIIMS-Bhubaneswar has grown significantly over the last 12 years, Murmu said, be it patient care, medical research or social welfare activities, it has earned many accolades and won the hearts of the people of Odisha, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. She expressed confidence that India will become a leading healthcare destination in the world, thanks to the success of AIIMS.
President Murmu lauded the graduating students for choosing the profession. She gave 59 gold medals to 31 students, and conferred degrees on 643 students, including 196 MBBS graduates.

Murmu, Modi lead nation in paying tributes to Kargil bravehearts
The day is observed as Kargil Vijay Diwas every year. On July 26, 1999, the Indian Army announced the successful culmination of Operation Vijay, declaring victory after a nearly three-month-long battle on the icy heights of Kargil in Ladakh. New Delhi, Jul 26 (PTI) President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday led the nation in paying tributes to the armed forces personnel who fought valiantly in harsh conditions to defend India's territory and handed a crushing defeat to Pakistan in the 1999 Kargil conflict. 'This day symbolises the extraordinary valor, courage, and steadfast determination of our jawans. Their dedication and supreme sacrifice for the nation will forever inspire its citizens,' Murmu said in a social media post. The President is also the Supreme Commander of the armed forces. Various events were organised across the country, including at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass, to mark the occasion. More than 500 Indian soldiers died in the conflict that began with Pakistani soldiers intruding into Indian territory. Modi said Kargil Vijay Diwas reminds the country of the unparalleled courage and valour of its soldiers who sacrificed their lives in defending the country's pride. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh too paid glowing tributes to the military personnel who died in the line of duty. 'On Kargil Vijay Diwas, I pay heartfelt tributes to our bravehearts who displayed extraordinary courage, grit and determination in defending our nation's honour in the toughest of terrains,' Singh said. 'Their supreme sacrifice during Kargil war is a timeless reminder of the unwavering resolve of our Armed Forces. India shall remain forever indebted to their service,' he said in a social media post. Singh and the top military brass paid tributes to the fallen heroes at the National War Memorial. Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan said Kargil Vijay Diwas is not only about remembering the past but also about drawing inspiration for the future. 'Our adversaries will continue to test our resolve, but the legacy of Kargil reminds us that our jointness, preparedness and unwavering courage — proven once again by the success of Operation Sindoor — will always triumph over enemy's deceit and aggression,' he said in a message. Gen Chauhan said Kargil Vijay Diwas reminds every Indian of the unparalleled bravery and patriotism of the valiant soldiers who fought fearlessly to safeguard India's territorial integrity, as also the 'bitter truth of Pakistan's betrayal.' 'Pakistan Army's ploy to extend the conflict beyond the Great Himalayan Range by sending regular troops disguised as Mujahideens remains a stark reminder of their treachery,' he said. In Drass, Chief of Army Staff Gen Upendra Dwivedi delved into the significance of the victory and touched upon how India achieved another decisive victory with Operation Sindoor. 'It was the time when India made it clear that no evil intention will be allowed inside its borders, no harm will be allowed to the unity and integrity of India,' he said. 'Continuing this tradition, during Operation Sindoor too, the Indian military with the same indomitable courage and firm resolve, targeted Pakistan-backed terrorist infrastructure and thwarted other aggressive actions of Pakistan with effective pretence and achieved a decisive victory,' he said. Prof Jagneshwar Dandapat reappointed interim VC of Utkal University under amended Ordinance
BHUBANESWAR: Prof Jagneshwar Dandapat has been reappointed as the in-charge vice-chancellor (VC) of Utkal University. The Chancellor's office on Friday issued a notification in this regard. He will continue till joining of the new vice-chancellor or until further orders. Dandapat was appointed as the in-charge V-C on May 27 this year after Sabita Acharya's extended tenure ended on May 23. However, this was challenged by a lawyer Prabir Kumar Das who filed a PIL in Orissa High Court, alleging that the appointment violated Section 6 (10) of the Odisha Universities Amendment Act, 2024. The Orissa High Court on Wednesday disposed of the PIL following the state government's decision to cancel the appointment. The re-appointment is according to the Odisha Universities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025. Section 6 (10) of the Ordinance has been amended to empower the Chancellor to appoint any person as V-C for the time being until a regular appointment is made. This also empowers the Chancellor to fix the tenure of the V-C.

MGNREGS job cardholders have to complete e-KYC verification within three months: Odisha minister
BHUBANESWAR: In a bid to shed the dubious distinction of having the third highest fake job cards in the country after Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, the state government has given MGNREGS cardholders three months time to complete their e-KYC verification. The move has come after Union minister of state for Rural Development Kamlesh Paswan in a reply in the Lok Sabha, revealed that Odisha has deleted over 1.44 lakh fake job cards in the last three years. State Panchayati Raj and Rural Development minister Rabi Narayan Naik, however, described the presence of fake cards as a legacy issue inherited from the previous BJD government. 'In the last one year, we have issued around 2 lakh job cards to genuine beneficiaries who were previously left out. Our government is committed to transparency and accountability. Misuse of public money will not be tolerated,' Naik said. He also said the government has been proactive in ensuring that all eligible individuals are covered under welfare schemes such as ration cards, PMAY, PM-Kisan, CM Kisan, and Subhadra Yojana. The e-KYC process, he said, will help weed out ghost entries and ineligible people who have obtained job cards to avail other government benefits. According to official data, the state has issued 66.5 lakh job cards to 1.09 crore people, of which 43.19 lakh cards are currently active. The number of active workers stands at 65.53 lakh. In his reply in the Parliament, the Union minister said that Odisha deleted 1,14,454 fake job cards in 2022-23, 22,226 cards in 2023-24, and 7,566 cards in 2024-25. 'Since the responsibility for implementing MGNREGS lies with the state governments, it is up to them to take appropriate action in cases of irregularities. This may include investigations and legal action, depending on the severity of the issue,' Paswan stated. The mandatory e-KYC for job cards comes after a similar verification exercise was undertaken to identify and remove ghost and ineligible ration cards from circulation across the state.
