Asteroid 2024 YR4 could hit Earth in 7 years. Here's what could happen — and what's being done about it

A recently discovered asteroid, named 2024 YR4, has a 2.8% to 3.1% chance of hitting Earth in 2032, according to NASA and the European Space Agency. While the odds of an impact are slim, astronomers are closely tracking the space rock to uncover more details — a process that could soon involve the most powerful observatory ever launched into space.
Not much is known about 2024 YR4, but the asteroid is estimated to be 131 to 295 feet (40 to 90 meters) wide, a 'size range comparable to that of a large building,' said Dr. Paul Chodas, manager for the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies, or CNEOS, at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.
That's not even close to the size of the 'planet-killer' asteroid that slammed into Earth 66 million years ago and led to the extinction of dinosaurs. That one was estimated to be about 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) in diameter and marked the last known large asteroid to hit our world. Planet killer asteroids are space rocks that are 1 kilometer across or larger and could have a devastating effect on life.
But smaller asteroids can cause regional devastation if they are determined to be on a collision course with Earth, which is why astronomers need to find out as much as possible — as soon as possible — about 2024 YR4.
Acquiring more data, like refining the space rock's trajectory, may reduce the odds of a direct hit to zero. But astronomers only have a certain amount of time to observe the asteroid before it fades from view in April. Now, they're planning to turn the powerful eye of the James Webb Space Telescope in 2024 YR4's direction with the hopes of pinning down the space rock's size and orbit.
The Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System, or ATLAS, telescope in Rio Hurtado, Chile, first discovered 2024 YR4 on December 27. The telescope is one of the asteroid discovery programs funded by NASA to scan the sky in search of near-Earth asteroids, said Davide Farnocchia, navigation engineer at JPL and CNEOS, via email.
The size estimate of the asteroid has changed very little since then, despite multiple observations using an array of telescopes, because the space rock can only be studied using the amount of sunlight it reflects. The amount of light reflected by the asteroid's surface is used to estimate how big it is.
However, the Webb telescope, slated to begin observations of 2024 YR4 in early March, sees the universe in infrared light. Webb will be able to measure the heat reflected by the asteroid and provide a much more accurate size estimate, according to a Nature study published in December.
Since early January, astronomers have used the Magdalena Ridge Observatory in New Mexico, the Danish Telescope and the Very Large Telescope in Chile to track the asteroid, which is currently more than 30 million miles (48 million kilometers) from Earth and moving farther away over time, Farnocchia said. The celestial object should be visible through early April and disappear as it continues its orbit around the sun.
Observatories in Hawaii are also actively tracking the asteroid. The Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System, or Pan-STARRS, located on the Haleakalā volcano in Maui, is the world's leading near-Earth object discovery telescope. Capable of spotting asteroids when they're distant from Earth, Pan-STARRS is currently part of the effort to follow 2024 YR4's movements.
'Hawaiʻi's telescopes are some of the most important tools for planetary defense,' said Doug Simons, director at the University of Hawaii's Institute for Astronomy, in a statement. 'Thanks to our prime location and advanced technology, we can spot, track, and study asteroids with incredible accuracy. That gives scientists the time they need to evaluate potential threats and figure out the best ways to respond.'
Webb will still be able to observe 2024 YR4 once the asteroid is beyond the viewing capabilities of Earth-based telescopes, providing measurements of the asteroid's position, according to the European Space Agency. After the initial observations in March, a second observation campaign has been planned for May. Scientists will use that data to provide the final measurements of the asteroid's orbit, as well as how its temperature has changed as it moves farther from the sun.
If 2024 YR4 disappears from view before space agencies can rule out any chance of impact, the space rock will remain on the risk list until it is back in view in June 2028. Current estimates of the asteroid's orbit suggest it returns to Earth's vicinity every four years, but it won't pose a threat in 2028, according to the University of Hawaii.
Understanding the exact size of the asteroid can help astronomers to estimate the risks if 2024 YR4 is determined to be on a future collision course with Earth.
'If the asteroid turns out to be on the large end of its estimated size range, the impact could produce blast damage as far as 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the impact site,' Chodas said. 'But that's in the unlikely event that it might impact at all. The potential for damage arises because of the incredibly high speed (about 17 kilometers per second, or 38,028 miles per hour) at which the asteroid would enter the atmosphere.'
Asteroids of this size impact Earth every few thousand years, and they can cause severe damage to local regions, according to the ESA.
In 1908, a 30-meter-wide (98-foot-wide) asteroid struck the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in a remote Siberian forest of Russia, according to the Planetary Society. The event leveled trees and destroyed forests across 830 square miles (2,150 square kilometers).
And in 2013, a 20-meter-wide (66-foot-wide) asteroid entered Earth's atmosphere over Chelyabinsk, Russia. It exploded in the air, releasing 20 to 30 times more energy than that of the first atomic bomb, generating brightness greater than the sun, exuding heat, damaging more than 7,000 buildings and injuring more than 1,000 people.
But if 2024 YR4 is on the larger end, the effects could be significantly worse, according to the ESA.
'If the asteroid is found to have a diameter in the (50 meter) range, and if it can be confirmed that it is a rocky asteroid, the effects would be similar to those of the Tunguska impact in 1908, where a surface area of (2,000 square kilometers) was devastated and 20 million trees were affected,' according to a document shared by the agency. 'This is equivalent to the area of a circle (25 kilometers) in diameter. If larger, the effects would extend to several tens of (kilometers).'
About 3,000 new near-Earth objects are found each year, but it's been more difficult to find asteroids within the size range of 2024 YR4 because they're dark, smaller and harder to spot with telescopes. Scientists estimate that there are about 600,000 rocky objects similar in size to the asteroid, but only about 2%, or 12,000, have been found, according to the ESA.
'Tiny asteroids do hit the Earth all the time, disintegrating in the atmosphere as fireballs; fortunately small ones cause little damage on the ground,' said Larry Denneau, an astronomer at University of Hawaii's Institute for Astronomy and coprincipal investigator at the ATLAS telescope, in a statement. 'Larger asteroids can cause much more damage, but they impact the Earth much less frequently. There are still many large ones out there that we haven't found yet, which is why we are continuously monitoring the whole sky to ensure that we stay ahead of potential threats.'

On a hot summer afternoon, a crew of astronauts arrived at Kennedy Space Center sporting their blue NASA flight suits -- ready to fly to the International Space Station this coming week. As the NASA Gulfstream aircraft rolled to a stop at the Space Florida Landing Facility, the four crew members of Crew-11 exited and proceeded toward the waiting media. NASA astronauts Zena Cardman and Mike Fincke, JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Kimiya Yui, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleg Platonov will launch to the space station no earlier than 12:09 p.m. July 31. The crew will travel in a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. "I've been on different crews before, but this one is exceptional," said Finke, who will be the mission pilot. "We've been training together for over a year now, and we're ready to fly," added Cardman, who will serve as commander. It will be Cardman's first spaceflight. Cardman was originally scheduled to fly in 2024 as part of Crew-9, but was reassigned to allow room on the Crew-9 SpaceX Dragon for the return of Starliner Flight Test astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams. Wilmore and Williams were assigned to serve as part of Crew-9 after their Starliner spacecraft malfunctioned during its June 2024 flight test -- a mission which, had it been successful, would have certified the spacecraft to ferry NASA astronauts alongside SpaceX's Dragon. "I'm so honored to be here with the crew, and taking part in this long history of human spaceflight," said Cardman. The crew will be part of Expedition 73, and will be onboard the outpost for the station's 25th anniversary. The International Space Station saw its first long duration crew in November 2000. While this is also the first spaceflight for the Russian cosmonaut, the other two crew members bring experience. It will be former shuttle astronaut Finke's fourth spaceflight and the second for Yui. "It's great to be back," said Finke. "One of the last times I landed at the SLF (shuttle landing facility) was on a space shuttle." Finke was fortunate enough to see the space station's early days, serving as part of Expedition 9 back in 2004. His last spaceflight was on the final flight of Space Shuttle Endeavor, STS-134, in 2011. Now Finke will be flying on another Endeavor -- SpaceX Crew Dragon Endeavor. It will be SpaceX Dragon Endeavor's sixth flight. NASA recently went through a recertification process with SpaceX to allow the company to go beyond the previously certified five flights per capsule. Steve Stich, program manager for NASA's Commercial Crew Program, told media during a July press briefing that NASA is eventually aiming to certify each SpaceX Dragon for up to 15 flights. Endeavor is the same Dragon spacecraft which launched DEMO-2 in 2020. DEMO-2 was the first orbital launch of astronauts from America since the retirement of the space shuttle, and the flight which certified the Dragon to ferry NASA astronauts. "I still remember watching that last shuttle launch, STS-135, sitting in a conference room with a very small Dragon team at the time, and it was my first few days here. And I remember looking at the faces around and thinking 'Today we begin. The world is counting on us to write the next chapter of human spaceflight,'" Sarah Walker, director of SpaceX Dragon missions, said during the July press briefing. Once Crew-11 arrives at the International Space Station, NASA's Crew-10 will prepare to return to Earth. Crew-10 will be the first NASA crew to splashdown in a Dragon on the West Coast. NASA's eye on the Sun took a little break on Friday, to watch two different solar eclipses throughout the day. The Solar Dynamics Observatory is parked out in geosynchronous orbit above North America, keeping its cameras trained on the Earth-facing side of the Sun. It's mission: to keep us in the loop on solar activity, including sunspots, solar flares, and coronal mass ejections. This immense solar filament tore itself away from the Sun's surface in August 2012, becoming a coronal mass ejection as it expanded out into space. (NASA SDO) On July 25, 2025, that mission was briefly interrupted — twice, in fact — as two other objects blocked the satellite's view of the Sun. Starting around 2:40 UTC on Friday (10:40 p.m. EDT Thursday), the orbits of SDO and the Moon synced up, producing a partial solar eclipse as the Moon crossed SDO's field of view. A partial solar eclipse viewed only from space, courtesy SDO's 171 Angstrom filtered view, which captures extreme ultraviolet light to visualize the activity going on in the Sun's lower atmosphere, including the immense coronal loops that extend away from the surface. The Moon's disk took roughly an hour, from around 2:40-3:40 UTC, to pass across the Sun. (NASA SDO/Scott Sutherland) These transits typically occur around the date of the New Moon, when the Moon is nearly or exactly in between the Sun and Earth. However, they rely heavily on the exact orientation of SDO's orbit in relation to the Moon's tilted orbit around Earth. According to NASA, during this 'lunar transit', the Moon covered 62 per cent of the solar disk at maximum. This was the fourth time since April that the Moon passed in front of the Sun from SDO's point of view. It was also the deepest transit so far in 2025 — 23 per cent of the Sun was covered during the April 27 pass, while on April 28, the Moon covered only 2 per cent, and on May 25, it covered only 4 per cent of the Sun's disk. Hours later, as SDO continued on its orbit around Earth, the planet itself got in the way of its operations, as it completely filled the satellite's field view. Unlike the crisp-edged eclipse produced by the Moon, the presence of Earth's atmosphere results in a much more hazy edge in SDO's images. SDO has roughly two 'eclipse seasons' per year, and is currently in its 31st since the mission launched. It begain on July 10, and will last until August 7. During that time, periodic 'blackouts' of solar imagery occur as the Earth gets in the way. On its long journey to the outer solar system, NASA's Europa Clipper spacecraft made a planned detour — and seized a striking photo opportunity. In a single frame, the uncrewed Europa Clipper caught Mars alongside both of its tiny moons, Phobos and Deimos, as they waltzed through space, all glowing in infrared light. The image, presented below, is more than a pretty picture. It offers a rare look at a planetary trio not often seen together, and it provided mission engineers a crucial chance to fine-tune the spacecraft's thermal camera as it zipped past the Red Planet. From about 560,000 miles away — more than twice the distance between Earth and the moon — Europa Clipper's infrared camera snapped 200 individual frames over the course of 20 minutes on Feb. 28. The frames were later stitched together to reveal the glowing heat signatures of Mars, Phobos, and Deimos. The result is a surreal view: Mars dominates the center, faintly surrounded by image-processing artifacts. At the upper left, Deimos appears as a tiny glowing dot. Closer in is Phobos, Mars' larger and innermost moon. To make the dim moons visible — each about 250 times fainter than Mars — engineers brightened the image. From a half-million miles away, NASA's Europa Clipper spacecraft captured Mars with its two moons, Phobos and Deimos, in space. To see a labeled view, swipe the slider above to the left. Visible on the planet itself is a dark patch near the top, marking the frigid northern polar cap, where temperatures dip to about -190 degrees Fahrenheit. A circular region shows Elysium Mons, one of Mars' giant volcanoes. The Martian moons are rarely seen together, let alone with their host planet. The first time Phobos and Deimos were both caught on camera was in November 2009, when the Mars Express orbiter snagged the unprecedented image, according to the European Space Agency. The portrait, which showcased the duo lined up, one behind the other, took years of planning, precise knowledge of their orbits, and some lucky viewing geometry. Scientists know relatively little about Phobos and Deimos, two of the smallest known moons in the solar system. Both are "blacker than coal and look like battered potatoes," according to ESA. Phobos is the larger of the pair, about 14 miles wide, and circles Mars three times a day. Deimos, just seven or eight miles across, orbits Mars every 30 hours. Right now researchers aren't sure where the moons came from, and it remains a source of mystery. Some believe they could have been asteroids captured in orbit around the Red Planet. Others think they could be chunks of Mars itself, blown out by a giant collision billions of years ago. The new Europa Clipper image was taken using one of the spacecraft's thermal sensors, designed to detect heat instead of visible light. This tool will later be used to explore Jupiter's moon Europa, a frozen world believed to harbor a salty ocean beneath its icy crust — and possibly the conditions to support life. The instrument — the Europa Thermal Emission Imaging System, or E-Themis — should help identify places where Europa's inner ocean might be interacting with its frozen shell — a key clue in the search for alien life. The spacecraft used Mars' gravity in March to tweak its path, a maneuver known as a gravity assist, on its way to the outer solar system. That close encounter provided a convenient moment to test instruments — and admire Earth's ruddy neighbor. Just a few days later, on March 12, another spacecraft made a pop-in for a gravity assist and some photos. That robotic spacecraft is on the European Hera mission to study the asteroid NASA intentionally crashed into three years ago. Europa Clipper launched from Florida in October 2024 and is scheduled to arrive at the Jupiter system in 2030. Once there, it will perform nearly 50 flybys of Europa, gathering detailed measurements of its surface, interior, and chemistry.
