Watch: Mariska Hargitay calls Jayne Mansfield film a 'cathartic' journey

June 17 (UPI) -- Law & Order: SVU actress Mariska Hargitay says creating a documentary about her mother, late Hollywood star Jayne Mansfield, was a "cathartic" experience.
The actress discussed My Mom Jayne, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Monday.
"I feel like I've been preparing, my entire life, to make it," she told Colbert. "But I was ready, and during COVID, I -- you know, we all had some down time and I found these boxes of fan letters that I'd received from fans that were all pertaining to my mom, whether they were, you know, people that had met her or had a story to share with me or a playbill, or something special."
"I had the time to sit with each letter and people had sent me things that were truly, like, a gift, because it felt like pieces of her, and so I said, 'I think I want to dig in here,'" she added. "...It's been such a joy to go on this archaeological dig, really, about her. It's been just an exquisite and rewarding and cathartic and extraordinary journey."
Hargitay, 61, was three years old when her mother died at age 37 in 1967.
In addition to sorting through letters, photographs and her late mother's belongings, Hargitay interviewed her half-siblings to create a more complete picture of Mansfield.
The documentary also shares that Hungarian bodybuilder and actor Mickey Hargitay is not Hargitay's biological father. The actress learned in her 20s that Nelson Sardelli, an Italian singer, is her birth father.
My Mom Jayne is set to air on HBO and stream on Max June 27.

Their two children — son Haskell, 7, and a 3-year-old daughter whose name has not been made public — even join in on the fun. "We used to post them on X, but now it's a hellscape," Coon said about the reviews. "And so now we decided we had to go to Letterboxd because we wanted to continue the tradition because people like the movie-watching lists." "And it turns out a lot of film students don't know things," she added. "Like, they've seen a meme from Deliverance, but they've never seen Deliverance. Or they've never seen An Unmarried Woman. Anyways, tons of films." Speaking about Haskell, the actress said, "We've been posting reviews from my son also because he's the only 7-year-old I know who you put a movie on, and he goes, 'Yes! It's in black and white!' " While their daughter is "a little bit more traditional," Coon added that Haskell is "a total cinephile." Their kids have weighed in on surprising movies. Earlier in 2025, they watched a silent version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. "The kids were surprisingly into this. The boy gives it a thousand stars," she said, noting Haskell's high praise. "The girl gives it 12 stars (because 12 is her favorite number)." In a review of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde the family wrote, "The boy gives it 100 stars, 'maybe more.' The girl made it nearly to the end and then called it quits." Coon confirmed that her kids did more than sit through the movie. She said her son "reads the titles out loud and kind of acts them out and then gets really excited. And my daughter sat through the whole thing. She's 3. I think she's just trying to impress her brother. She also likes Frozen, but, you know. One more obvious film that the family reviewed was 2024's The Wild Robot — "The boy gives it so many stars that he doesn't know how many stars he can give it." Another thing that Coon watched with Letts was the third season of HBO's The White Lotus, which she starred in. She told Fallon that the couple tuned in every week to watch the new episodes, adding that she forgot what had happened after filming. For a show that is notoriously shrouded in secrecy, Fallon wanted to know if Coon had a hard time keeping the plot a secret. "They collected our scripts in Thailand. We weren't allowed to have them out. But no, it was not hard because I don't see anyone or do anything or have any friends," she teased, adding, " And I think my parents watched the show, but they haven't mentioned it yet so I don't know for sure. A trailer released Tuesday features an asteroid hurtling to the Earth, beasts, gunfire and explosions. "The dreaming will survive even if do not," says Dream, or Morpheus (Tom Sturridge), in the teaser. The preview also features Game of Thrones actress Gwendoline Christie, who portrays Lucifer. "Lord Morpheus comes to us in a futile attempt to free one he loves from our domain," she says. "Hell is anticipating his visit most avidly." Allan Heinberg, the showrunner, writer and executive producer, told Netflix's Tudum the upcoming season will see Dream learning to face his own arrogance and ignorance. "...Sooner or later, we all have to reckon with the fact that the struggles we face are often of our own making. Dream must now figure out what to do about it," he said. The streamer previously announced the episode titles for Season 2, which include "Season of Mists," "The Ruler of Hell," "More Devils Than Vast Hell Can Hold," "Brief Lives," "The Song of Orpheus," Family Blood," "Time and Night," "Fuel for the Fire," "The Kindly Ones," "Long Live the King," "A Tale of Graceful Ends" and "Death: The High Cost of Living." 'A Minecraft Movie' Streaming on Max: Release Date and Time
If you caught some morsels from A Minecraft Movie on social media -- videos of Jack Black passionately singing about cooking chicken with lava or theater audiences going wild over a chicken jockey -- this week you can stream the flick that started it all. The Max streaming service, which will soon take on the title of HBO Max again, previously announced that the video game movie would premiere in June. Now it's shared the exact release date for the PG-rated comedy. A Minecraft Movie stars Black, Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen and Jennifer Coolidge and follows protagonists as they try to get back to the real world after ending up in the unfamiliar, cubic Overworld. There are mid- and post-credits scenes, themes of creativity and adventure, menacing piglins and, of course, zombies riding on chickens. A Minecraft Movie is directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre) and has been a global and domestic box office success.
