Outstanding Guest Acting (Drama, Comedy) Commentary (Updated May 22, 2025): The four Emmy guest acting categories often serve as a crystal ball — a hint of good fortune for some series, or a subtle warning flare for others. This year, all signs point to HBO Max trying to corner the market.
In guest drama and comedy races, HBO Max has stacked its deck with heavy-hitters from 'The White Lotus' (Scott Glenn), 'The Last of Us' (Kaitlyn Dever, Catherine O'Hara and Jeffrey Wright) and 'Hacks' (Julianne Nicholson).
But don't count out Apple TV+. Its hilarious workplace satire 'The Studio' could end up stealing the whole guest comedy actor race. Emmy darling Bryan Cranston is leading the pack, with scene-stealing support from none other than Ron Howard and Martin Scorsese. When your 'guest stars' are Oscar-nominated directors, it's less 'who invited them?' and more 'how can we get them back?' And lets not forget the powerhouse women like Sarah Polley and Zoë Kravitz, both worthy of recognition.
And then there's 'Saturday Night Live.' With Season 50 in the books, the NBC sketch comedy is looking for more love than usual. Martin Short seems poised for a double nom, likely joining the lead comedy actor race with 'Only Murders in the Building' to help out his hosting bid.
But he's not alone in the SNL spotlight. Timothée Chalamet, in full Bob Dylan mode during his Oscar campaign for 'A Complete Unknown,' is also in the mix for his hosting. Add in perennial contenders like Dave Chappelle, John Mulaney and former cast member Mike Myers, and the ballot could read like a reunion special.
For awards obsessives, there's a fun footnote in plain sight.
In guest drama actor, Beau Bridges could be more than just a solid bet. He also could be the Emmy gold-plated insurance for co-star and lead drama actress frontrunner Kathy Bates in 'Matlock' needs to get her over the finish line. Why is that? A little Emmy history.
If you've been tuning in to the Awards Circuit Podcast (FYC Golden Globes by the way), you've heard my hesitation in keeping Bates in the top spot without additional series support — no drama series nom, no extra acting mentions. It's a risk. But Bridges could be the tipping point. And if Emmy history is any guide, he's been here before.
Back in 2006, Kyra Sedgwick began a four-year streak of lead drama actress nominations for 'The Closer,' consistently nominated but always empty-handed, and the only recognition for the popular series. Then came 2010, and Bridges' guest turn as Detective George Andrews where he nabbed a nom — and Sedgwick finally won her long-overdue Emmy. Coincidence? Maybe. Lucky charm? Quite possibly.
Could lightning strike twice for Beau Bridges, and help out Kathy Bates? Emmy voters do love a good story arc. It also helps he has three individual Emmys to prove his love and respect by the TV Academy and industry.

The Primetime Emmy Awards, commonly known as the Emmys, are awarded by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS). Established in 1949, these celebrate outstanding achievements in American primetime television. The Emmys are categorized into three divisions: the Primetime Emmy Awards for performance and production excellence; the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, recognizing achievements in artistry and craftsmanship; and the Primetime Engineering Emmy Awards, which honor significant engineering and technological advancements. The eligibility period typically extends from June 1 to May 31 each year. The Television Academy hosts the Emmys and has over 20,000 members across 30 professional peer groups, including performers, directors, producers, art directors, artisans and executives.

The Grammys Add New Country Category for 2026

Country music is getting a new Grammy category: best traditional country album. It is the only new music category being added for the 68th annual Grammy Awards in 2026. To reflect the change, the existing best country album category has been renamed best contemporary country album. The new category will join the 13 other categories in Field 5, four of which are specifically dedicated to country, while the others cover American roots, Americana, bluegrass, blues, folk and regional roots music. More from Billboard Here's When the Eligibility Period for 2026 Grammys Will End & Other Key Dates DJ Akademiks Denies Taking Payola From Drake During Kendrick Battle Raekwon and Ghostface Killah Release Trailer for 'Only Built 4 Cuban Linx' Documentary New categories are considered from proposals submitted to the Recording Academy's Awards & Nominations committee, which are then voted on by the Academy's board of trustees. 'The community of people that are making country music in all different subgenres came to us with a proposal and said we would like to have more variety in how our music is honored,' Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason jr. tells Billboard. 'They said, we think we need more space for our music to be celebrated and honored.' Mason said the proposal had been submitted a number of times previously before passing this year. The move helps bring the country categories more in line with other genres which separate contemporary and traditional albums or performances, including R&B, pop and blues. 'It makes country parallel with what's happening in other genres,' Mason says, 'But it is also creating space for where this genre is going.' The definition for the new category reads, in part, 'This category recognizes excellence in albums of traditional country music, both vocal and instrumental. Traditional country includes country recordings that adhere to the more traditional sound structures of the country genre, including rhythm and singing style, lyrical content, as well as traditional country instrumentation such as acoustic guitar, steel guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, piano, electric guitar, and live drums. It also includes sub-genres such as Western, Western Swing, and Outlaw country.' The hope is that the new category benefits artists who fall outside of mainstream, commercial country music, such as Charley Crockett, Sierra Ferrell, Colter Wall and Noeline Hoffman, who have previously been nominated into the Americana and American roots categories. (Both Crockett and Ferrell were nominated for best Americana album for the 2025 Grammy Awards, with Ferrell's Trail of Flowers taking home the Grammy.) 'The issues have been, traditionally, a lot of people that weren't sure whether [an album] was Americana or roots or folk or country were just jamming everything into one category,' Mason says. 'There are obviously nuances between the different genres. Those experts in those genres understand those nuances, and I'm quite certain now you're going to see the right people going into Americana versus folk versus traditional country. [The change] gives us an opportunity to put things in more specific categories.' As all subgenres of country grow in popularity, Mason says the addition of a new category gives more chances to share the wealth. 'People from that community are making more music, it's more varied, there's different styles of writing and performing,' he says. 'I'm hopeful that that community understands that the academy is doing what it always does, which is stay in tune with what's happening in their genre.' Brooklyn teacher nabs Tony for theatre education excellence

All the classroom's a stage. A Bed-Stuy theater teacher won a special Tony award last Sunday for helping bring the joy of Broadway to generations of students — becoming the first in New York to nab the prestigious title. Gary Edwin Robinson took home the 2025 Excellence in Theatre Education Award at last weekend's Tony ceremony for expanding theater access to thousands of students at Boys and Girls High School. Oh, it's like riding on a carpet — the magic carpet!' Robinson, of Fort Greene, told The Post about receiving the honor and rubbing elbows with the theater's elite. Robinson was nothing short of 'shocked' when he heard the news that he would be this year's recipient — and even three days after the ceremony, the excitement was still settling in. Advertisement 'I always said as a kid, 'One day I'm going to go to the Tony Awards. I'm going to get a Tony Award.' And to receive this recognition award is just the tops.' The head of the school's theater program was cast as this year's winner because of his unwavering dedication to his high school students — he developed programming that allows teens to shadow Broadway professionals. He has also leaned on the Arthur Miller Foundation Fellows Program and Broadway Bridges Program to pack the academic year with on- and off-Braodway shows — this year, they've seen 'Hell's Kitchen,' 'Gypsy,' 'A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical' and 'John Proctor Is the Villain.' 5 Robinson has been leading the theater program at the Boys and Girls High School for a decade. Gabriella Bass Robinson lives and breathes theater: he teaches five drama classes a day and leads a three-year program that explores acting, playwriting, producing, directing and more. Many of his students have gone on to illustrious careers in the arts — one is on tour in 'Moulin Rouge,' another is a manager at the famed Apollo Theater and another just finished a TV show. His major emphasis, however, is how theater can enhance his students' lives even if they choose to explore career paths beyond the stage. Advertisement 'I tell [athletes], 'You're going to be selected for a team and with sports figures, you have to do endorsements. That's theater right there; you've got to sell the product and that's where the theater comes in and that's why you're taking this class,' Robinson explained. 5 'Dreams do come true,' Robinson said of the honor. Gabriella Bass 'I have a student who wants to be a nurse . . . You have patients. You might have to sing for the patients and might have to do a little performance with the kids to make people feel better and to heal them. That's where theater comes in,' he continued. 'Theater really can help you in any walk of life. And I say, 'I am that bridge to help you get to where you want to be in your career path.'' Robinson, who has taught at Boys and Girls High School for a decade, was bestowed the award at the 78th annual Tonys on Sunday by Carnegie Mellon University President Farnam Jahanian. It marked the first time an educator from the Empire State was chosen for the honor — despite the Big Apple being considered the 'theater capital.' 5 The award was presented at the Tonys by Carnegie Mellon University President Farnam Jahanian. REUTERS 'I get up and I go to work, and I go in to do theater with my students. To receive an award for what you truly love and enjoy doing — okay, I accept!' Robinson said. Advertisement The prize also comes with a $10,000 grant for the school's theater arts program, which Robinson is still mulling over what exactly to put it towards. His students will also receive a visiting master class taught by Carnegie Mellon drama professors. Robinson hopes his success can be another learning moment for his students, telling them to 'find your dream and stick with it.' 'Do all that you can, put your energy into it, and make that a living reality,' he said. 'Dreams do come true. Just stick with it and follow through.'
