Brooklyn teacher nabs Tony for theatre education excellence
All the classroom's a stage.
A Bed-Stuy theater teacher won a special Tony award last Sunday for helping bring the joy of Broadway to generations of students — becoming the first in New York to nab the prestigious title.
Gary Edwin Robinson took home the 2025 Excellence in Theatre Education Award at last weekend's Tony ceremony for expanding theater access to thousands of students at Boys and Girls High School.

'What a lift. What joy it is. Oh, it's like riding on a carpet — the magic carpet!' Robinson, of Fort Greene, told The Post about receiving the honor and rubbing elbows with the theater's elite.
Robinson was nothing short of 'shocked' when he heard the news that he would be this year's recipient — and even three days after the ceremony, the excitement was still settling in.

'I always said as a kid, 'One day I'm going to go to the Tony Awards. I'm going to get a Tony Award.' And to receive this recognition award is just the tops.'
The head of the school's theater program was cast as this year's winner because of his unwavering dedication to his high school students — he developed programming that allows teens to shadow Broadway professionals.
He has also leaned on the Arthur Miller Foundation Fellows Program and Broadway Bridges Program to pack the academic year with on- and off-Braodway shows — this year, they've seen 'Hell's Kitchen,' 'Gypsy,' 'A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical' and 'John Proctor Is the Villain.'

Robinson lives and breathes theater: he teaches five drama classes a day and leads a three-year program that explores acting, playwriting, producing, directing and more.
Many of his students have gone on to illustrious careers in the arts — one is on tour in 'Moulin Rouge,' another is a manager at the famed Apollo Theater and another just finished a TV show.
His major emphasis, however, is how theater can enhance his students' lives even if they choose to explore career paths beyond the stage.

'I tell [athletes], 'You're going to be selected for a team and with sports figures, you have to do endorsements. That's theater right there; you've got to sell the product and that's where the theater comes in and that's why you're taking this class,' Robinson explained.
5 'Dreams do come true,' Robinson said of the honor.

'I have a student who wants to be a nurse . . . You have patients. You might have to sing for the patients and might have to do a little performance with the kids to make people feel better and to heal them. That's where theater comes in,' he continued.
'Theater really can help you in any walk of life. And I say, 'I am that bridge to help you get to where you want to be in your career path.''
Robinson, who has taught at Boys and Girls High School for a decade, was bestowed the award at the 78th annual Tonys on Sunday by Carnegie Mellon University President Farnam Jahanian.
It marked the first time an educator from the Empire State was chosen for the honor — despite the Big Apple being considered the 'theater capital.'

'I get up and I go to work, and I go in to do theater with my students. To receive an award for what you truly love and enjoy doing — okay, I accept!' Robinson said.

The prize also comes with a $10,000 grant for the school's theater arts program, which Robinson is still mulling over what exactly to put it towards. His students will also receive a visiting master class taught by Carnegie Mellon drama professors.
Robinson hopes his success can be another learning moment for his students, telling them to 'find your dream and stick with it.'
'Do all that you can, put your energy into it, and make that a living reality,' he said. 'Dreams do come true. Just stick with it and follow through.'

Taiwan's storied Palace Museum must expand its global horizons, president says
By Ben Blanchard TAIPEI (Reuters) -Taiwan's National Palace Museum, home to one of the world's biggest collections of imperial Chinese treasures, must expand its horizons internationally to let the "world see Taiwan", President Lai Ching-te said on Friday as it marked its centenary. The museum was re-established in Taiwan in 1965 after the Republic of China government lost a civil war with Mao Zedong's communists and fled to the island in 1949, taking with them thousands of cases of antiques once owned by China's emperors, saving them from destruction during and after the revolution. While it is a top tourist attraction, the presence of so many Chinese artefacts has over the years caused discomfort to those Taiwanese who champion the island's separate and distinct identity from China. Speaking to inaugurate an exhibit of French impressionist and early modernist paintings from New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, Lai said the National Palace Museum was a "state asset". "The National Palace Museum not only needs to deepen its roots locally, it also needs to deepen them internationally. We need to go into the world, to let the world see Taiwan, but also to bring the world to Taiwan," he said at the museum, located in Taipei's foothills. "The National Palace Museum is not only the National Palace Museum of Taiwan, but also the National Palace Museum of the world, and I believe these values should be strongly supported by the international community." A competing institution remains in Beijing, the similarly named Palace Museum, though the National Palace Museum is not planning any joint anniversary events with China. Quincy Houghton, the Met's Deputy Director for Exhibitions and International Initiatives, speaking at the event with Lai, praised the close relations between the museums, including in 1996 when the National Palace Museum sent some of its collection to the Met. "We are honoured to collaborate with the National Palace Museum on its very special centennial year," she said. Works by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne are on show at the National Palace Museum until mid-October.

International K-pop fans thrill to prospect of BTS reunion

This year's BTS Festa marks the 12th anniversary of the group, which last performed together in 2022 and has not toured since 2019 because of the global pandemic and subsequent military service obligations of its members. It was unclear if any of the recently discharged performers would appear at the festival organised by the group's management agency, HYBE. But that did not dampen the enthusiasm of fans, some of whom flew in from around the world hoping to spot some of the superstars at the gathering or at a pair of solo concerts by BTS rapper J-Hope as he wraps up his "Hope on the Stage" world tour. "I want to enjoy everything because there are many things to do here and ... I hope to see the guys maybe," said Karla Linan Saucede, 33, who travelled from Mexico with her sister and friends. "It's gone past excitement and into almost being numb," said Ayla O'Ryan, 45, from Scotland, adding that she planned a visit this month to practice Korean in the capital so that she could attend. BTS' members Jimin and Jungkook discharged from the South Korean military on Wednesday, become the fifth and sixth to complete their service. Members RM and V were discharged on Tuesday and the last to finish will be Suga on June 21. While details of a reunion have not been released, the group is expected to hold its largest ever world tour in 2026, says NH Securities, one of South Korea's largest investment firms. Shares in HYBE jumped 11.3% in June as brokerages raised their sales estimates and target price for the agency ahead of the group's comeback.
