UPDATED: Jordan, Syria, Lebanon reopen airspace as Israel, Iran trade fire - Region
Jordan, Syria and Lebanon reopened their airspace on Saturday, a day after imposing closures as Israel and Iran traded fire. On Friday, Israel launched strikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites, prompting retaliatory missile attacks on Israeli cities. The escalation led to airspace closures across Israel, Iran, Iraq, Jordan and Syria. Global airlines cancelled or rerouted flights to Tel Aviv, Tehran and other destinations in the region amid the shutdown. The US military has assisted Israel in intercepting incoming missiles. Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon share borders with Israel, but only Jordan has formal diplomatic relations with it. Syria was long ruled by Bashar al-Assad, an ally of Iran, but has since his ouster in December been led by Islamist former rebels. Following Assad's overthrow, Israel's forces occupied the UN-patrolled demilitarised zone in the Golan Heights, and has carried out hundreds of strikes in Syria. Lebanon hosts Hezbollah, a Lebanese Shia group that was battered in a war with Israel that saw the latter escalate strikes and invade southern Lebanon. Israel has continued to carry out strikes on Lebanon in violation of a ceasefire that came into effect in late 2024, and still occupies areas in the south of the country. "Jordan has reopened its airspace starting 7:30 am (0430 GMT)," the chairman of the Jordanian Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission, Haitham Misto, said in a statement. Lebanon's Transport Minister Fayez Rassamni announced the reopening of the country's airspace from 10:00 am (0700 GMT) Saturday. In Syria, the aviation authority also announced the reopening of the country's airspace to civilian aircraft. *This story was edited by Ahram Online. UN chief urges end to Iran-Israel escalation: ‘Peace and diplomacy must prevail' - Region
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on Israel and Iran to halt their military attacks, warning against further escalation and urging a return to diplomacy. 'Israeli bombardment of Iranian nuclear sites. Iranian missile strikes in Tel Aviv. Enough escalation. Time to stop. Peace and diplomacy must prevail,' Guterres wrote on X on Saturday. Hostilities began early Friday when Israel launched a wide-scale assault on military and nuclear facilities across Iran, including the Natanz uranium enrichment site. The strikes continued into Saturday. Iranian state media reported the deaths of senior Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commanders and nuclear scientists. Among those named were IRGC commander Hossein Salami and nuclear physicists Mehdi Tehranchi and Fereydoon Abbasi. Iran responded with missile and drone attacks on Israeli cities, killing at least three people and injuring dozens. Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has warned that Israel will 'definitely' face a 'bitter, painful fate' in retaliation. *This story was edited by Ahram Online. Iran's Foreign Ministry calls nuclear talks with US ‘meaningless' after Israeli attacks - Region
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman on Saturday called further nuclear talks with the United States 'meaningless' after Israeli strikes on the country, state television said. The comments by Esmail Baghaei further threw into doubt possible talks between the two nations, initially scheduled to take place Sunday in Oman. 'The U.S. did a job that made the talks become meaningless,' Baghaei was quoted as saying. He added that Israel has passed all Iran's red lines by committing a 'criminal act' through its strikes. However, he stopped short of saying the talks were cancelled. The Mizan news agency, which is run by Iran's judiciary, quoted him as saying: 'It is still not clear what we decide about Sunday talks.' Iran announced earlier on Friday through state television that it would not participate in Sunday's nuclear negotiations with the United States, suspending its involvement 'until further notice.'
